Is it okay if I'm a little disgruntled with all the "Low Carb" advertising?

I think it is great that my campus has hopped on the low-carb bandwagon because now students, faculty, as well as visiting parents have healthy options instead of thetypical campus food.

I'm not sure the low-carb restaurant foods are all that healthy. You know, bacon is low-carb--I wouldn't call that healthy. And a Whopper without the bun is not "healthier."

I think this is where the whole thing is gonna fail. There are people who are NOT on a diet such as Atkins or South Beach who are going to go out and think that all these low-carb menu items and products are now healthy and just eat them--just like the low fat/no fat craze. These products are only "healthy" when used in the context of a full day's diet and balanced out with good nutritional food throughout the day.

I agree that this whole low-carb diet craze is getting a little bit out of hand. Just the other day, I saw a TV ad promoting a new line of low-carb Entenmann's cakes! Now, I may not know everything about carbs and such, but I'm pretty sure that cakes are made primarily of carbohydrates... So really, wouldn't the cake have to be "fake" to be low-carb?!

I realize that because of its popularity, lots of companies have jumped on the bandwagon, but a lot of it seems a bit over the top. (Plus the fact that these companies are charging suer-premium prices for their low-carb goodies, which really isn't right.) At what point is a greasy burger wrapped in lettuce of all things considered healthy? There's no doubt in my mind that there is a right way (i.e. healthy way) to live a low-carb lifestyle, but something tells me that a lot of people don't know how to do it.

However, to those of you (and by you, I mean the population in general) who are living a healthy low-carb lifestyle, more power to ya! As for me, you'll have to pry this bowl of rice from my cold, dead hands. :p

I've kept almost 50 pounds off for over 3 years - I am not about to change what is working for me nor do I want to change what is working for you. I never talk about why I am eating what I eat - I don't want to bore people to death.

You won't bore me to death, I swear! I wanna know how you took off 50 pounds, and more importantly, how you have kept it off for 3 years! :p

(and I promise not to be a food nazi, I just love hearing success stories! :) )

I feel the same way! What concerns me is that with all the emphasis on low carb, restaurants may forget about those of us who just want to eat healthy. I have lost 91.6 pounds on Weight Watchers and I just want to be able to get grilled chicken or fish, steamed veggies, baked potatos and maybe a salad with lowfat or fatfree dressing.
For those of you who are on Atkins or South Beach, don't you have to eat the plan all the time? I mean, wouldn't it be bad to just eat low carb for a meal every now or then?

I think if you want to do low carb then it's a total lifestyle change.

Unfortunately, people have gained a ton of weight by eating too many of the wrong foods.

I like low carb. You have to give yourself the chance to get used to it. I don't buy the low carb products out there, except for the Dannon Low Carb Vanilla Yogurt (only 3 grams of carbs in one serving).

Anyway, this is what I usually eat.
Breakfast: 1 vanilla Dannon low carb yogurt.
Snack: 1 hard boiled egg
Lunch: 1 salad containing romaine lettuce, cucumbers, raw broccoli, diced chicken, some shredded cheddar and a splash of salsa
Dinner: Usually some chicken, a cup of green beans and a salad

I treat myself every Saturday night with a cup of Jello.

I gave up sugar. I gave up bread (or anything made with white flour). I feel great. I'm losing weight. I have more energy than I've had in 5 years. My doctor approves. What more can I ask for? After I lose the weight I will do a maintanence diet. If I go back to eating sugar and white flour products I will put the weight back on. So, my life with sugar is over.

Unfortunately, so many companies have marketed junk products as low carb. It's amazing how many people will buy the low carb ice cream, low carb bars, low carb shakes, and other non-natural foods. If you don't change your lifestyle you'll end up gaining it all back and then some.

I can't stand that all these new man made products are giving low carb a bad name. It really does work.... if you do it the right way.

Yeah, I try to avoid "FrankenFoods" as much as possible. I do keep a box of Blue Bunny low carb ice cream bars at work, because they keep me away from the Skittles in the vending machine, but otherwise, I eat things that don't need a chemical engineer to make them low carb.
