iPhone 4

I had an iPhone for 2 years. Couldn't stand the fact that AT&T still only had Edge in some areas that I frequent, even after they promised almost 2 years ago they would have 3G "soon" so I dumped AT&T last month and went with Verizon. Got the HTC Incredible (Android) phone and it is just amazing.

So, if you are currently on Verizon, go take a look at the Android phones at Verizon. I wasn't unhappy with the iPhone (just the crappy service) but I am definitely happier with the Incredible!

I've been contemplating this decision for two years. I think I've thought it through. Thanks.

I had the original iPhone and upgraded to the 3G model.

I skipped the upgrade to 3GS.

I've never been happier with a cell phone

I will be getting the new iPhone.

It looks HAWT!:thumbsup2

I think I will skip this upgrade

I had the original
skipped 3G
got 3GS

I don't think I can upgrade yet. :(

From Engadget.com:

AT&T's made it pretty clear how this upgrade sitch is going to go down for existing customers moving to an iPhone 4 on the 24th of the month, but if you want to double-check and make sure you're good to go (we can't blame you), there's an easy way that was briefly mentioned yesterday: dial *639# on your current phone. You'll be returned a text message from AT&T detailing your situation -- either you'll be told you can get a full upgrade price (meaning $199 / $299 for the 16GB and 32GB, respectively) or you'll be eligible at some particular date in the future. Not all's lost in the latter case -- you can still pay $200 more for the phone as an "early upgrade," which is less than the no-commitment price of $599 / $699. We'll have a more comprehensive breakdown in our full iPhone 4 guide coming later today, so stay tuned!

I did that *639# and it's telling me that I qualify with an $18 upgrade charge. I can't believe it considering I got the 3GS the day it came out...so it's only been about a year since I got it. This was the first time I have ever used AT&T. What's their "renewal" policy? Is it at 18 months? If so then that makes sense as 18 months will be in December and you stated above that any customer whose upgrade eligibility comes up in 2010 is eligible for the 4g.

Hmm. Birthday?? I'm not sure what to do here. I like my 3gs but that expanded battery capability is really looking sweet to me. I fully charged my phone this morning and by 10 tonight had to put it on the charger-and I really didn't have a lot of excess phone usage today. Maybe an hour and a half on the phone and a random text here and there but nothing like what I used to when it was lasting a day and a half or two days. I'm currently on that whole "drain the battery dead every time to replenish the battery stamina" deal... no luck yet.

Anybody else get that upgrade offer who got the 3gs when it first came out?

I have a 3GS that I got last year when it became available and ATT also says I am available for an upgrade with a new 2year contract for $18.

This is some type of conspiracy because I was contemplating making a switch to Sprint when my contract expires next year. Their Android EVO phone looks awesome, 4.3" screen and the ability to tether up to 8 devices via WiFi included. Where as it is another $20/month for tethering the iPhone and you need to accept one of their tiered plans and drop the unlimited plan if you already have it.

I can't wait to get this phone. It'll be my first iPhone (almost bought one in January but then I heard about this upgrade, and so I waited).

I am sooo excited. Hope I'm able to get in on the pre-order before it fills up... it would be great to have this phone in my hands in time for my July 16 Disney trip! :)

My current phone is an ancient relic, an old Nokia with the silver coating chipping off so that it looks kind of like the Terminator when his robot-face was half exposed. Terminator phone served me well, but it's time to move on!

It doesn't say that.

What it says is:

"We can offer you a discounted iPhone upgrade at a higher price with a 2-yr commitment and an $18 upgrade fee.

I think you're going to pay $417/$517 if you want to upgrade. ($199/$299 + $200 more - per the Engadget.com article - +$18 upgrade fee)

Which means you're saving only $100 off of the full, non-contract price.

I'm salivating at the new iPhone. But I think I'm just going to wait. Especially since it seems like they're releasing a new model every year. By next year, 4GS or 5 may be available.

At least that's what I keep telling myself to make it easier to have to wait another year. :)

My guess, and this is only a speculation, is that next June we'll see the 4G iPhone for AT&T's upgraded LTE network or at least talk about when we will expect to see it.

Fine by me! The *639# thingee said that I could upgrade in April of 2011, but my contract started in August of '09, so that's when I was planning on upgrading. :teeth:

Does everyone have to pay the $18 upgrade fee and does the upgraded phone include a new SIM card? My DD wants my 3G iPhone to use as a iPod Touch.

ETA: When does your new 2-year contract start? When you upgrade or at the end of the previous contract? My previous 2 years is up in November.

Looks just lovely, will be picking one up later this month, just glad I resisted the upgrade from 3g to 3gs :)

:goodvibes

Ditto on that! I just didn't see any need\want for the 3GS over my 3G. Now, I'm REALLY glad I didn't! :thumbsup2

Yeah, I'll be getting the new one. I really, really can't wait! :cool1:

No, Actually here is exactly what it says:

"As a valued AT&T customer, we can offer you a discounted iPhone upgrade with a new 2-year commitment and an $18 upgrade fee."

Very ambiguous indeed!

I didn't mean that the upgrade would cost $18 but that is how I typed it, oops.

I figure I will wait until the phone is actually released and see what price shows up. I most likely will just update the software at first anyway.

My DH bought me the iphone 3GS for Mother's Day last month. Do you think I would be able to upgrade or anything?

I have a 3G and was not planning to upgrade.

Watched the keynote presentation on iTunes and OMG. Think that I will have a challenge resisting upgrading once I get a change to play with the iPhone 4 in the Apple Store :goodvibes

Having had my 3g for two years nearly (longest I've ever ever had a phone - always upgraded every 11 months pre iPhone) I'll be hoping to pick one up on launch or very close to launch assuming stocks are good (3g launch was a nightmare over here!!).

Just waiting patiently for uk pricepoints and tariffs to be revealed...

:goodvibes

If that's exactly what yours says, I'm not sure there's ambiguity. It sounds like you may eligible to upgrade the phone.

Mine said I'd pay a discounted, yet higher price, plus an $18 upgrade fee. It also said that I was eligible to upgrade in April of 2011. I know we began our contract in August of 2009.

So I wonder if they're giving you a 4 month window where you can upgrade, with the full discounted price as long as you pay an $18 fee?

Just guessing. Hope you get the new phone if that's what you're looking for! :)
