I know that DCL will give us a fridge for my dh's insulin storage (his unopened medication should be kept cold per instructions on box), but would prefer not to take up precious room with an extra fridge. Normally I wouldn't care but since we are doing a few parks days and stroller rentals have gone up in price, we are now bringing our own rather than renting.

My question is, will ice keep the cooler cold enough? If so , what's the best way to keep the ice in the cooler? Should I pack a small collapsable one strictly for insulin and ice?

The last Disney cruise, the room steward lept telling us he couldn't get ice for us when we requested it as it was locked up. :confused3 I realize from reading here that he was just a little weird. ;) Is there ice available at the drink stations if necessary?

We've always kept it in the drink chiller and I think the beverage chiller in the cabin already will keep it cool enough, our understanding is that is doesn't necessarily have to be cold, just shouldn't get hot or freeze. I would feel safer with that vs having it on ice and possibly get too cold/freeze.

Agreed. We'd have wrapped the boxes in washclothes. I don't quite understand why unused insulin should be kept cold but the one you are using can be kept at room temp but the pharmacy keeps it in their fridge too so what do I know.

this boggles me too. I keep mine in the regular cooler with no problems.

All unopened insulin should be kept at a constant temp in a fridge. I am on a pump and always bring an extra unopened bottle along with me. I have dropped the bottle before and had it shatter on me. Once the insulin is opened it is ok at room temp. I have my doctor fill out the DCL medical form. On the form we request a fridge ( some of the cooling boxes do not stay at a constant temp) We also request a sharps container. DCL has always been great about accomendating us. For travel I have a FRIO. It is great for keeping the insulin at a constant temp, unlike ice packs.

I agree. They put the fridge under the desk. The stool now takes up room space but you could just ask your room steward to remove it. You really don't need it.

www.diabetesandmore.com has an insulin or medicine refrigerator that takes up very little counter space (but a precious plug-in). My sister uses it to great success when travelling. It comes with a car plug and a regular plug. Hope this helps.

Guest Services will store your medication. I'm always a little hesitant about letting medication out of my hands, especially injectables, but they will store it for you.

We've used extra fridge before and it fits nicely under desk, and it works much better than 'ice box' that is in all rooms.

Wow. Thanks everyone. Great advice!

I never thought about a sharps container since he uses those little tips with the cap that go back on but we should have one.
