Inspired by Deafmedic debacle . . . have you lied/embellished on the Internet?

I admit that I have told lies in the past. Not on here. This was years ago...probably in my late teens. I don't do it anymore, because I just don't see the point. Besides, I hate liars, so why would I want to be one of them?

LOL One of my kittens likes to wait until I'm sitting in the kitchen on a stool, at my laptop. Then he sits on the floor and attacks my leg or my hand. He doesn't want to get on my lap, but just wants to terrorize me. I wish he would go for one of the dogs (he sometimes does). He is such a little devil. It's the same kitten that climbs up me, onto my shoulder, when I'm getting his food ready. Sometimes I don't even see him coming. Ouch! But it's so funny at the same time.
:rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: My little "Rabbit" is like that, he needs to constantly be the center of my focus. It can drive me up the walls, but it also is so endearing.

Saying that lying to your friends on the internet is not as bad as lying IRL is like saying that lying on the telephone is not as bad as face to face. JMHO
::yes:: Perfectly said!

Men lie on the internet to lure little girls into their homes and rape and kill them. Is that not quite as bad as men kidnapping and raping the little girls in real life without the internet invovled?

Women lie and befriend pregnant women on the internet for the intent of getting into their homes and killing them to steal the unborn baby. That's not quite as bad as someone doing that in real life is it?

I'm really baffled by your logics here. :rolleyes:

Of course those are awful lies, but once the perpetrators make contact with their victims they are REAL LIFE lies. If the lies had stayed on the internet with no real life contact, they would have been bad lies. When they make contact, the lies become real life lies and are of course much, much worse.

I don't think deafmedic was trying to have anyone come to a funeral or contribute to a memorial fund, so his lie was still an internet lie.

It's not baffling to me.

It's only the same if the person you are talking to on the phone is someone you have never met or will probably never meet. Most people don't spend significant time on the phone with strangers, like they do on the net, so the two situations aren't the same. And don't you ever lie to people on the phone? I lie to phone solicitors and fundraisers all the time- we're in the middle of dinner, my husband isn't home, etc. Those are strangers. I never lie to friends to get off the phone.

If someone is trying to intentionally hurt the feelings of people on the internet or make them feel foolish, I do think that is wrong. It's mean. I still think it's worse to do that in real life. For example, the lady who's husband told everyone at work that she was pregnant.. These aren't people she sees all the time, and it will be very uncomfortable to deal with that real life lie. If the husband had come to the DIS and told everyone his wife was pregnant, I don't think that lie would have been as bad as telling everyone where he works.

See I don't tend to lie to phone solicitors, either. I usually tell them that I never buy anything from anyone on the phone. True and not something that they can argue with. Well, I suppose that they can argue with their own reflection, but I don't stay on the phone long enough to witness that. :rotfl:

Motivation is important when "ranking" a lie. I'm not so sure that Deafmedic wasn't hoping to benefit financially from her "death". Wouldn't surprise me at all. We'll probably never know why that lie started.

I suppose it is worse to lie about a pregnancy to co-workers than to people on the internet unless there is some possible financial benefit to the lie . If the person is hoping that people will send baby clothes, etc then I think the lie is just as bad. Maybe bad in a different way, but still bad.
