Inspired by Deafmedic debacle . . . have you lied/embellished on the Internet?

Exactly...they would see that I'm 5'2" :teeth:

Yeah, I've seen your picture! I can only dream. :rotfl2: If I stand out in the sun all summer I can do the blonde part ok. But then winter comes and even that is gone. :teeth:

I'm not creative enough to make up things.

Do you really think that someone who has lied would tell the truth here?

Nope, I would never lie. Heck, I'm too scatterbrained as it is without having to try to keep up with lies.

Sorry if I'm a little slow on the uptake here, but are you saying deafmedic did not die in a horrible car accident? Or did she? Internet has been down a few days and I am just now checking back in.

Surely someone wouldn't lie about dying? Please tell me someone did not lie about someone dying. :confused3

Nope.

I don't believe it is morally right to lie/embellish in real life so why would my principles change on the internet?

Nah. You can see from my previous posts I have enough drama as it is. :)

I told my DH about the latest Deafmedic updates (I'd told him the story after they "died"). My DH thinks it's ok to lie as long as someone is grammatically correct when lying. ;) :teeth:

Just kidding, for anyone who was not following the other thread, but I loved his comment and had to share. And that's no lie! :rotfl:

If I was to lie about something I don't think I could keep track of the lies because I'm THAT forgetful LOL.

I've been on a few boards where members have been called out on various lies. One that sticks out is a woman who was pregnant while working as an embalmer. Her husband died and then she found out she was having twins or something. It was a bizarre story, but it turned out that none of it was true. A common one is the "illness" lie to get sympathy. Sad really. I guess some people really need attention :confused3

I don't think that lying on the internet is the same as lying in real life.

You don't? That's really weird. I think lying is lying, regardless of where you do it.

I try to behave online like I would in real life.

I agree, I think it's odd too. I also don't get the people who think it's okay to have a cyber affair because it's not really cheating.

Anyway, I've never lied online. I value honesty in all aspects of my life, so why wouldn't I value it in ALL my interactions with other people? I don't even really care for role playing and I'm not very good at it. DH, on the other hand, loves to role play and he really gets into it. I don't understand it at all.

I've made quite a few real friends online, including DH (we met online in 94). Maybe that makes a difference in how some of us view things, is that we take our online relationships seriously. I also made a very dear friend years ago who really did die, leaving behind a motherless child, and it makes the whole Deafmedic thing so much more heinous in my eyes.

BTW, I've read the Deafmedic thread, but can someone PM me with details? I missed the original thread that talked about the death, so I don't really know what was said or what went on from there? What exactly was supposed to have happened? How did everyone find out it was false?

oh wait I lied! Ive particpated in the two truths and a lie posts. So does that make me a liar for saying that Ive never lied on the internet? ;)

Oh Im doomed!! :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

Nope. Lying to people you know and see and know your family in real life is much worse.

Those two subjects are alike. It's not nice to lie on-line. It's worse to lie in real life.

It's bad to have an affair on-line. It's worse to have one in real life.

That's all I'm saying, and I don't understand why people are so upset by my point. It was hurtful of deafmedic to lie on-line, but not as hurtful as it would have been if he told the same lie to his parents, church members, a neighbor, etc.

Who thinks that lying about the death of one's kids on-line should be grounds for CYS intervention IRL?

You were the one who said you have problems spelling, I was just agreeing. It always stood out because of your username. Apparently, I touched on another sensitive subject.

No, not with important things anyway..

Now as for taller and thinner HECK yea but I try doing that in person too :confused3 so what's so wrong with that ??

I do however "fib" on an online game I play because a 32 year old playing this game would be considered a little odd... The game is played by teens but my DS introduced it to me and now I'm hooked. Soooo whenever someone asks.. I'm 18 and my DS's sister !!! :rolleyes1

What was the Deafmedic debacle? I think I missed that....

but no, I never lie, if anything I tone things down because I get accused of being a drama queen.

Men lie on the internet to lure little girls into their homes and rape and kill them. Is that not quite as bad as men kidnapping and raping the little girls in real life without the internet invovled?

Women lie and befriend pregnant women on the internet for the intent of getting into their homes and killing them to steal the unborn baby. That's not quite as bad as someone doing that in real life is it?

I'm really baffled by your logics here.

I don't always tell the truth, but I never lie. How's that, you ask? Time travel...think about it! And before anyone try's to correct my spelling or grammer, that's how we do things from my time.

That's a lot harder to pull off, don't you think?

The internet makes it easy for people to deceive and lie. It's obvious that their lie hurt several people that considered them friends. I don't know DM, I don't even remember her/his posts, but I'm not going to dismiss those that were hurt by their horrendous lie.
