Inspired by Deafmedic debacle . . . have you lied/embellished on the Internet?

Just some thoughts:

I view Internet people - the people actually typing under the usernames - as real people, and all that goes with that.

I believe I should conduct myself on the Internet in the same manner I should in my “Real Life”. My “Virtual Life” is part of me/my Real Life.

------------------------------------------------------------

This kinda thing touches pretty close to home for me.

DH and I had a close, longtime (10+ years) Real Life friend who chose to lie and lead a double life on the Internet, and to also take the lie/double life to Real Life. Suffice it to say, the whole terrible mess was truly heartbreaking for a number of people, including us.

------------------------------------------------------------

To my knowledge, I’ve never lied with intent to deceive on the ‘Net. It is likely that I’ve embellished or “lied” at times in playful exchanges or posts on the DIS, but I think such times would have been clearly understood to be “just havin’ fun” kinds of things. For example, DH and I have a “joke” about how he tried to “off” me on our honeymoon. At some point, I probably related the tale on the DIS. He didn’t REALLY try to murder me, and I think it would have been clear from my post that I was presenting a humorous take on a real event that did take place. And just to set the record straight, browneyes/Shannon isn’t REALLY my “Twin”-- she’s my Brain. ;)

-----------------------------------------------------------

It’s no secret that I have more than one username on the DIS. When I initially joined, I had no intention of creating any additional names, and had there been a rule against doing so as I’ve seen on some BBs, I would not have done so. With the exception of one creation for the sole purpose of temporarily engaging in grievous self-destructive and immoral behavior that I couldn’t bring myself to do to Chipperdini, any other username of mine was created for benign purposes. On the rare occasions that I’ve conversed seriously with anyone in PM using an “alias,” especially if I had reason to believe the individual would know me as “Chipperdini,” I’ve been upfront that I’m using an alternate account and have not hesitated to say that I’m Chipperdini. The vast majority of my posting here over the years has been as Chipperdini, although a year or so after I’d left and distanced myself from the DIS and DISers, I did return for a time just to post mindless “killing time” posts on “game threads” under the username flaps. Quite unexpectedly, I wound up hanging around and posting longer than I’d intended to before “going down with the ship“ during a board change.

------------------------------------------------------

Oh, and btw, Chipperdini IS dead, in case anyone ever really believed I was a highly evolved wheeter. ;) (The guinea pigs that inspired the username are no longer living. *sniff*sniff*)

I have worked very hard to maintain integrity in my life. It's important to me to be honest so I don't lie on the internet either. And I have to admit that I always assume others are telling the truth also. It usually shocks me when I hear stories like deafmedics.

I am often way to honest online.. There are probably lots of things I should shut my mouth about..To be honest, online is my outlet. For the most part people IRprefer to live in denial. Maybe that includes myself.. I tell me family outside of the house very little about my illness.. I have to keep quiet about it to most friends and acquaintences because I never know how they will react and what the repercussions may be with my kids. Online is the place I can talk about things most openly.
I don't lie online, but I know that because others have so often lied,I get doubted sometimes. That's to be expected

Okay, I'll come clean. I'm not really a Jedi... and my lightsaber? Plastic. The shame

Bwah! :rotfl:

As for lying, don't really get the point. I mean, there are things I don't discuss with online friends, but they're the same things I don't discuss with friends in person until I'm close with them.

You burst my bubble! I'll never be able to believe anyone again and it's all your fault! :rotfl2:

Ok, you caught me I will come clean. I am not really a PhD (My DH is.) He started the account and I stole it. I can't spell to save my life and I have a masters in social Work (but more college credits combined then him.)

I also lied about how many times I have been to Disney World. Never been, I just needed a group of friends so I came over her and made up a life.

:rotfl: ;) :earseek:  :rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2:

I am JUST KIDDING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Why would anyone lie here? What is there to gain? Status as a Disney Nut? For the most part that is something I try to get away from in my real life, or at least down play. My friends think I am crazy, you guys are the only ones that understand. :grouphug:

No I don't lie on line, or in real life. :teeth: I assume most other people I encouter aren't also.

If I was going to lie, I wouldn't be an overweight frumpy housewife with a 20 hour per week part time job. Maybe I should embellish..... :rotfl:

Hey, I inspired a thread.

I have never lied on this board, but if I were lying right now about lying on the internet, how would you know? I am pretty skeptical about the drama and tacky bragging threads people create on the DIS, but I believed the deafmedic one.

I don't think that lying on the internet is the same as lying in real life.

Yeah, in real life people could tell that I'm not a 5'9" 120 pound blonde bombshell. :rotfl:

Now why would you want to be?

I would much rather be a 5 foot tall, 120 pound bruntte bombshell, oh wait, that is what I really am (or at least my DH thinks so. ;) )

Nope, my life is an open book... its just that nobody wants to read it ;)

LOL

I dont get the whole point. Besides, ZachnElli would rat me out ;) ROFL Just kidding D :)
I see her all the time, I cant pretend I weigh 125.

Seriously, why would somebody lie about themselves? It isnt worth the effort IMHO. I am the same name here there and everywhere, Binny or some form thereof.

Not yet.

In fact, I've said things that I thought were right, and was proven wrong!!
No lying here. But of course, no one has asked me anything yet!

Ok Ill ask ;) LOL Are you from Vegas? I just got back last night. Wow Ive never seen it SO packed. McCarron was a beast to try to get through!

Nope. One of my dogs is name Vivi. So instead of Viva-Las Vegas (Elvis), i sing Vivi-Las Vegas to her. In front of everybody.

My friends are trying to find me home where they will be gentle with me. ;)

But I do love me some Vegas!!!

But the real question is, "Does your singing it to her make her *smile*?" :rotfl2: :teeth:
