We are looking at portable DVD players for traveling. Does anyone know if the airplanes have electrical outlets to plug a DVD player into? We will be flying Airtran in October. It seems like most of the portable DVD players out there do NOT have a battery power, and I want to make sure whatever we wind up getting can be used when we fly.

TIA

Most planes do not, but find out what type aircraft you are flying on, then go to www.seatguru.com and look up airtran and the aircraft type. It will tell you if there are outlets near your assigned seat.

I don't think Airtran does.
I fly Delta which has this on some planes/seats but honestly I find that 90% of the time they are broken!

According to seatguru none of the planes flown by airtran have power ports.

Many portable DVD players have battery power. Spend the few extra dollars for one with 3-4 hours of battery life. You don't want to run out of power with 10 minutes left in your movie.

You can purchase an external battery pack.

Make sure you get noise cancelling headphones.

A unit like this one hs good battery life.

You can get a generic unit (Coby) for under $60 (but with short battery life).

All the portable DVD players that I have seen (and owned) are battery powered with a rechargeable battery, otherwise, it wouldn't be portable. Just make sure that the DVD player is fully charged before getting on the plane.

Thanks everyone! I appreciate the information. I have searched online, but several of the portable dvd players I have seen did not mention having a battery power source, and I know the ones we borrowed from friends for our last road trip did not.

Some of the car DVD players that loop over the front seat headrest don't have a battery.

Othwerwise a battery is a given. Maybe not even worth mentioning in the specs. A battery which is rated for 2-3 hours might not last an entire movie. Spend the money for a unit with longer battery life.

You could watch video on some (many) I-Pod models. If you don't mind buiying an orphaned product, for the right price, you might look at the Zune.

LOL, I've got a ZuneHD, and I actually really like it. The CLARITY of the screen is beautiful, but it is smaller than a credit card, so while it's fine for watching clips, etc., it's not exactly great for a feature-length film. (I like that it is small b/c I primarily use it for audio, and it fits in small girlie pockets.) It does only charge via USB, just FYI.

OP, when it comes to air travel, NEVER count on being able to charge anything en route. Power outlets are usually non-existant (or non-standard size) in coach, and they are scarce even in airports. I always carry a short extension cord with me when I fly, so that I can ask folks who have already staked out the gate area outlets if they would be willing to share.

I'm very quickly converting to doing most of my fun-time travel stuff on my NookColor; it's so much easier than hauling out my laptop. (Though I of course carry both on business trips.) You do have to watch the battery power carefully when it comes to video, but fully charged, it should give you around 5 hours.
