In 2009, what will happen to all those TVs?

I know how DTV will operate... What I mean is that I think that there literally might be MILLIONS of TVs that people will no longer want, and they'll be headed to landfills.

In my home alone, we have 3 TVs that are not digital, and are not hooked up to cable, and never will be...

EDIT: I work in TV, I don't need to know HOW it will work. I get it. I'm just saying that I bet this causes a huge amount of unwanted TVs.

If it works like free to air digital in the UK you simply buy a set top box for about $40 and you are fine. They will be even cheaper in the US.

Same here... but I bet many won't spend the $$$, and we're even getting rebate checks for the 1st box we buy.

I havent looked into this to much...

So if we dont have a newer newer with a digital cable box were screwed?

All of my tv's are hooked up to cable but not with any box.

I have a potentially stupid question...
We have a TV that's about 4 years old and have DirecTV. Do we need to get a converter box?

agnes!

You either need a digital cable box OR you will need to buy an Analog to Digital conversion box.... should be "about" $50 per box. And you get a rebate coupon for, I "think" $30 for the first box.

ugg at 4 tvs thats not good. Especially since one is a 13 inch in my bedroom:lmao:

Is it just a coincidence that UK and US are turning digital around the same date?

Claire ;)

My husband tried to pull one over on me, saying that our current 2 t.v.'s will no longer be good and that we'd just have to buy new ones dang it. Nice try buddy I said!

Right... but I bet many people will choose not to spent the $50, or whatever it costs.

Why are you confused?
I'm not confused... are you confused?

If you go to https://www.dtv2009.gov/you can apply for the government coupon that pays for the converter.

And anyone can do that, even if they need to go to the library to have a librarian print it off for them.

And there are stores that are advertising the converters for the price of the coupon.

You put the confused smilie up...

It also says one or 2 coupons in your link... We have someone above who needs 4.... And ORIGINALLY it was ONE coupon.

The government is trying their best to keep the "mayhem" to a minimum but there are still plenty of people who either don't get it or are not paying attention.

If presented with the choice of tossing a perfectly good TV into the trash or spending $40 (you could get TWO coupons) and just a little of your own ($10 to $20) to make them work again, I think most (unless they're trying to pull the wool over on someone OR "just don't get it" OR haven't been paying attention) would opt for the converter.

So I don't think there's going to be millions of perfectly (otherwise) TVs toss into landfills. Besides, many communities have optional and/or mandatory recycling for electronic equipment.

I put it up 'cause you seemed unaware of the coupon.

Any any green person, I can tell you, will spend the $50 to buy the converter rather than throw it out.

I guess you replied to my first post. I was the one who originally mentioned the coupon / rebate in this thread.

....

I think that as people want more flat screens AND you add the DTV box, you'll see more unwanted TVs. The DTV conversion will be all they need to make the choice....

People are going to want 16 x 9 NATIVELY, IMO.
