I'm convinced Heelys are proof of a decline in civilization.

I don't understanding justifying one rude behavior with another rude behavior. I see this throughout the thread and don't understand the logic.

I'm not opposed to them when used in the appropriate place. But the other day I was waiting to pull into a space at the grocery store and saw a girl holding onto her mom and rolling through the parking lot. I just don't think that's safe. :sad2:

As for the Heelys, I'm with Demosthenes. I think it's hilarious to see how many people get their knickers in a twist about this.

Me too! :lmao:

I will admit I am so glad I don't live in an area populated with Heely Hellions. Around here, most kids just wear them in their driveway or in the park on asphalt. They have never been allowed in our schools, and I have yet to be run into by any kid in a mall wearing Heelys. Mostly they are just sort of skating along, out of the way, no different to me than a person who is walking. Heelys are different than roller skates or a skateboard because all one needs to do is put their foot down to stop, since its only one wheel. I guess I'd be annoyed too if some kid came at me at full speed with a pair of skates on...fortunately have not had that happen!

Me thinks you'd feel differently if you were knocked down by a kid wearing them.

How often does this happen in your neck of the woods? Seriously. I am just curious, is this one of those urban legend type things? Because I really am wondering how many people are knocked off their feet by kids wearing Heelys?

Yep:sad2:

I don't like heeleys so let's hurt the kid wearing them- nice.

I do agree it's all about parenting.

Nope, not too safe. And when you have to be the one picking up knocked over displays, not much fun

flame suit on....
I have seen tons of kids wearing them- in the mall, supermarket or wherever and have never ever been even close to getting run over- or have I ever seen it happen. I am not a fan of them because I think it furthers the laziness- too lazy to walk? But my kids have them. They use them as skates. They are outside shoes. And they use them that way. It is not hard to explain that these are skates- would you wear your skates to the movies?
So while I agree in theory on where they should be worn I also don't think someone is a horrible parent if their child is wearing heely's in the supermarket. Can't we all just get along....wheels or no wheels

Um, you do understand that there is a big difference between joking about an "urge" and an actual action, right?

I would never in a million years consider even looking at a kid cross-eyed let alone do something mean.

I have seen them in our malls and grocery stores. One did go whizzing inches from my feet recently - I admit that I didn't like it.

However, people can be rude on these things or not. The problem is bad parenting and bratty kids not the heely's themselves. I guess that businesses banning them is the only solution though. :confused3

Add me to the list!:thumbsup2 :goodvibes

Only on the Disboards is a person "A BAD PARENT" for taking their kid to church! :confused3

Do Heelies belong in Church...NO! But sometimes when a Parent is running out of the house on Early Sunday am, they dont take notice of what the kids have on their feet. Heelies DO look like regular shoes.

More of a BUSY parent than a bad parent!!!!:thumbsup2

If the WORSE thing a kid ever does is wear Heelys to Church..THIS IS A GOOD THING!

Heelys are no more dangerous than the roller skates we ALL wore as children......and YES I wore them into stores as a kid...cause thats all I had on my feet when Mom sent me to the store. I never killed anybody!

Normally I wouldn't ever say anything on a parenting thread but I have a big big hatred for those stupid shoe skate! Until recently I just thought it was inapproriate that there were rolling around the mall or walmart or whatever until this kid big as I am knocked me flat in the commissary.

I was in one isle at the corner endcap and this kid of about 12 or 13 came around the corner and wham I'm flat down and this kid is stepping all over me with his wheels and shoes. It's a miracle his ears didn't burn off with the words I was saying. His mother came around to see the show I guess because all she told him was to be more careful. I asked if she really thought that was the place for skaiting when there was a skate park less than a mile from here. She said it keeps her kids acting good while she shops. I said well you understand that your child can fall and actually hurt himself quite badly or run over a small child considering he doesn't pay attention and this is a small store. Of course nothing actually made sense to her. Then I complained to the manager.

For whomever said it's no different than a kid that runs into just on wheels, I don't think so. These kids if they have enough speed can get going pretty good; a child can't walk that fast and it smart when they bump into you.

Ok, that's more than a bit hyperbolic, I admit. ;) But after seeing a kid wheeling around the hallways today AT CHURCH, I've had enough.

I agree! I've almost been run over many times the past few weeks at church, and more and more kids are wearing them! I think that I'm going to turn into the mean mom again and ask them to be banned from church. I'm just afraid that one of these kids are going to crash into one of the elderly or disabled members just because they wanted to "have some fun".

It does just boil down to a lack of respect.

But how many kids are NOT whizzing by with them on? I mean, you'd think the malls were invested with kid whzzing by and knocking grown adults off their feet at an alarming rate by the sounds of things here on the DIS! So many brats, so many stupid parents, so glad they live somewhere else! :scared1:

Last time I said this on a Heely thread, someone told me I thought my kids could do no wrong  so I am taking my chances by admitting that my kids are very good at using Heelys. They don't whiz by anyone, and are able to use them with a lot of control. They more or less glide, and then when they want to stop, they simply put their foot down. By some of the descriptions here on the DIS, I picture a huge rolling rink full of kids who have never been on skates before. I just don't see that around here I guess. :confused3

Except in this case I KNOW THESE PEOPLE, and this *is* typical of their "parenting". They are the types who believe discipline stifles creativity (yes, I've actually heard them say that very thing) and simply allow their kids to run the show.

If I were talking about some random person, I might agree, but in this case it isn't simply "being in a rush". But where you made the leap in logic that "taking a kid to church is bad parenting" is quite beyond me. The topic, in case you missed it, is Heelys and their being inappropriate in church when used as skates. Just wearing them would hardly be problematic.

My DS wants a pair - so many of the kids on his swim team have them so he sees kids whizzing around inside all of the time. When I told him that he could get them but he would have to pay for them himself and they could only be used outside like skates, the allure was gone.

It took me a long time to figure out why I did not like them. I've never been run into or bumped by anyone with them so that was not an issue. For me, it comes down to this - these things just scream "I can't be bothered with walking anymore. I must have wheels on my feet so that I can whiz by you with as little effort as possible";) .

I wasn't knocked over, but I have been run into by "heely kids" in Walmart and the grocery store. I'm also in fairly good shape with decent balance-I'm not an older person or someone that might already have an injury. Of course, the same thing can happen from letting the kids run around in the store, or my "favorite" thing, letting them push carts around the grocery store when they're too short to see over them! (can you tell I've been crashed into by more than one of those?)

I've also been run into TWICE, on two different occasions, at the mall. The real kicker was when some hellion-on-wheels ran over my 17-month-old who was standing by my side, holding my hand. The parent, who witnessed the whole thing from across the food court, did not come over to intervene. I'm guessing she didn't want to hear what I had to say....

I just don't get why on earth you would let your kids wear the wheels indoors? What could the possible justification be? You're the parent, you are responsible for what your child is doing.

I totally understand but I think SOME of you actually mean it - not all.
