I would cry if this happened!

Anyone have that TA phone number? I want to book a cruise when them!! LOL!!!!!!

Those poor people!

OMG!! That is terrible. How could someone do that to people. I hope they get their money back. Can you say law suit? I would have that woman's butt in a sling if it was me.

But you know what? If they had checked out this website then they would have known that a 8 day? Disney cruise wouldn't be leaving out on a Thursday. That's just one small reason why I love this board.

I was thinking the same thing myself. Even if they had picked up a cruise brochure from a travel agent, they would have known something was wrong. A whole year, and they didn't do any research at all???
Something seems fishy. It's hard to imagine anyone not being a little more clever than that.

We cruised last year and I was on this board constantly trying to learn everything that I could...but I know a few other people who went and didn't do any research. I don't think that makes them any less clever than me. I think some people just rely on what their TA tells them. I feel bad for them... especially the kids, they certainly are learning a harsh lesson early in life.

I would HATE to be the one to tell the kids they were not going on the cruise they had waited for..........

My first thought..8 day cruise...what..ok..now, planning for a group they would have had to do some type of research on what ship/days itineraries.

What a horror story. I hope the TA gets what she deserves! :sad1:

Since I live in the Phila region (aka the Jersey Shore) I saw this on the news this morning as my DH was getting ready for work, he gave me that look, you know the one that says: You better check on our ressies. My sister, who is traveling with her family with us, (along with our other sister/BIL and our Mom- sorta a family reunion) booked us through her travel company that she owns a time share with- Since she was giving up a week of her time share they gave us all great discounts, cheaper than any of the quotes I have gotten from Allseas. DCL or DU and AAA!!! I am very pleased, but I have never heard of the company OVC so I am going to make a little phone call today!

I heard about this yesterday. The reporter probably got the details a bit mixed up.

From what I was told, it's the Magic that's sailing without them. The extra days are a separate resort stay.

I missed this, but I know how these reporters mess stuff up constantly.

If I were those people however, I know I would have at least been asking about my documents. I mean you should fill them out before you go!

This is sad though. Not the first time I've heard of a rip off TA in the Philly area.

I'd be just sick to my stomach.

Very sad indeed. We are blessed that we have boards like this (and the means to use them) to do our research. It goes to show that not everyone does and unfortunately those are the ones that are usually taken for a ride.

Even back in the days of using a local travel agent (as I did for many of my early cruises) I knew enough to ask questions and they were great for spelling things out and for following up.

I don't think that agent will be in business any longer - at least I hope not.

My sister had the same thing happen to her and it was her honeymoon. They had payed for 1 week in WDW and the Eastern cruise on DCL. The TA kept coming up with excuses why they don't have their documents yet, so my BIL called DCL and they said there were no reservations for them. My BIL called the travel agency and they said he had been fired a few months ago and they couldn't help. My BIL ended up sitting in front of the TA's townhome at 5:00am and calling him until the TA finally gave the money back to BIL in cash. The TA kept repeating that it was against the law for tresspassing on his property and my BIL said it's even more against the law to take peoples money and deceive them. Thank god they got the money and Disney was able to help them out on such short notice, they even saved some money.

I think instead of reporters waiting outside the travel agency there should be police officers waiting to arrest that woman for fraud. Something like that would kill me, not to mention the kids!

This kind of thing happens every year. Around here it's usually kids cheated out of a Spring Break trip! So sad. Pay with a CREDIT CARD!!!

As a travel ageant I consider that kind of behavior untoleralbe. They give us all a bad name. I love planning trips and keep in contact with my clients. I help with iteneraty planning. A good agent should always be in contact. I hope they are able to get their money back plus extra for having to let these kids down. Children should not have to suffer at the stupidity of adults. This agent is just stupid and should lose their CLIA/IATA number. Sorry to vent but this just rubs me the wrong way.

I really, really hate hearing about TAs like this. As a TA it saddens me on so many levels - for the poor family that's left without a vacation, for the bad reputation it gives other TAs, the whole thing is just not fair.

Let this serve as a reminder to everyone to be sure you know who you're dealing with. Don't let this discourage you from using a TA - there are unscrupulous people in every profession. Just make sure that you research/interview a prospective TA. A GOOD TA will make your planning easier and take the stress OFF you. A GOOD TA is an invaluable resource that will be in your corner fighting for you should anything go wrong, will keep an eye out for potential problems and will watch out for your best interests. Get recommendations from your family, friends, coworkers, folks here etc on good TAs to use. Several very good and very reputable TAs are mentioned frequently on these boards.

It's no guarantee of ethical behaviour, but when talking with a TA ask if they're certified (CTA, CTC or CTM). This means that they've put the time and effort into professional development and education and have completed several exams in order to become certified. In Canada, for instance, out of more then 33,000 TAs there are only 2,100 that are certified.

Also ask what organizations the agency is a member of (eg ASTA, ACTA, CLIA). To be honest it doesn't say much about the integrity of the agency, as these organizations will give membership to just about anyone who pays the fee. But it at least says that the agency was willing to pay the fee to join.

Your vacation will cost thousands of dollars, and result in a lifetime of memories. It's a shame that unethical TAs can make those memories painful ones. Please be sure that you're using a TA that will truly make your vacation the experience of a lifetime.

I have NEVER in 7 cruises paid a dime to my Travel Agent for a reservation. They have ALWAYS given my credit card number to Cruise line, or had me write my check to the cruise line for the deposit, and then all installments when they are due. The cruise line's name is what appears on my credit card bill.
Now for my air fare for the DCL cruise, which I didn't book through disney, the travel agent had the airline put it on my credit card, and then I had a $25 fee charged to my card by the Travel Agent for issuing the tickets. Well worth the fee since the travel agent found an air fare that was $225 per person less than what Disney wanted.
