I was spanked as a child and I spank my own kids. The no-spanking people are tossing out thousands of years of wisdom on the basis of junk science and a conflation of limited, reasonable spanking with child abuse. That's a shame. We need more parental authority, not less.

Luckily that bill won't pass.

I was spanked also and turned out ok. My mother on the other hand wishes she would not have spanked me, she feels she could have done something else that would have been just as effective.
My cousin spanks and her kiddies are not very well behaved. I have spanked and yelled also say that it was not working. I use other techniques now and our house is much happier place. I am pretty strict, not a permissive mom at all and i get lots of complements on his behavior.
Just because folks spank doesnt mean its effective, there are better ways for me to discipline without hitting my child. I think the problems today are lots of parents are too worried about hurting a child's feelings and always worried they might have kids that end up in therapy and somehow damaged if they say no. Oh for God's sakes people just learn the word NO and impose rules and your kids will end up fine, in fact they will be much better adults if rules and following directions are taught at a young age.

I have no issue with that. I just want to stress though, we don't spank just because we've lost our temper or don't know what else to do. It's a premeditated punishment, rather than a reaction to a misbehaving kid. Sure, we might give a swat to get their attention, but that's not what we call spanking. It works well for us, but other people should do what they're comfortable with.

Its the same here, its premeditated discipline, not a temper fit. I think that what ever the discipline its very important to be consistant with rules and when applying discipline.
