Has anyone used the VRBO/Airbnb $200 credit on the Capital One Venture X? I had an Airbnb charge on January 28, and the credit still hasn’t posted.

Related: does Capital One have a messaging or chat system similar to Chase’s SM? I poked around on the app, and the options seem to be chat with a bot (not helpful) or call. The VX is in P2’s name, and I know he won’t want to call, so I’m hoping there’s an alternative way to contact them.

  • Sept 2020 we drove from our east coast home to visit many national parks (Indiana Dunes, Teddy Roosevelt, Glacier, Yellowstone, and Badlands) plus Black Hills/Custer State Park. We stayed in national parks lodging and a couple airbnbs, packed the camping stove, and cooked lots of meals. It was 3 weeks of relaxation and hiking that we desperately needed.
  • July 2021 we flew from PHL to LAS (SW RR + CP, Centurion Lounge) and did a Zion-Bryce-N Rim of Grand Canyon loop, staying in national parks lodging again. T

On your Sep 2020 trip, did you stay in chain hotels at all or just airbnb + np lodging? This is what I envision for us in a year or 2 (retirement pending at end of this year). While we'd love to have an RV of some sort, I don't want to work another year to make the expense palatable (it also seemed like it's a 6-8 break even point on using hotels instead). We're tent campers but don't think we'd want to do that on a long road trip (or in colder climate or bear territory). We were thinking a combo of chain hotels + NP lodging (which really can't be beat for location/experience) would be a great happy medium. Bringing along our camp stove makes perfect sense!

Aside from SW and Bonvoy, we've been just accumulating URs, Avios, C1 points to use later. While luxury flights/accommodations sounds wonderful, I think for us, defraying some travel costs in early retirement makes the most sense -- we'd rather travel more than travel fancy at this stage. We don't "churn" but do open cards as we encounter large expenses (hello upcoming bathroom renovations).

Okay another AA question, if I book Basic Economy tickets and have to cancel or change it looks like I'm 100% out. Is this the case? The difference is almost $200 between BE and Main cabin. So if I can save the money I'm good with that. The only reason I can foresee wanting to cancel is a hurricane, or a Buffett concert, LOL. I would think w/ a hurricane they would be more forgiving w/ the cancel policy, LOL. I know I flew down to NC right after Florence, and lots of the hotels weren't open, no rental cars, those hotels that were open were booked solid w/ those that had no house, etc.

AA has said I have to book by my exp date. So I'm looking at an August trip w/ my kids. I said this year I'd never spend my last week of summer on vaca w/ them. Here I am looking at doing it again, LOL.

Okay here's a WWYD? I have 102k AA miles. Once I go over 5/24 the idea is to get more AA miles. I normally use my AA miles for my "cheap" flights down to NC solo, at only 12k RT.

Option 1 - Buy all three seats basic economy - Cost (after $125 credit) $577.60
Option 2- Buy 2 basic econ seats, use points (12k RT) for the other - Cost (after $125 credit) $343.40 plus 12k miles
Option 3- Buy 2 seats main cabin, use points for 1 seat - Cost $453 plus 12k miles
Option 4- Buy 1 basic econ seat, use points for 2 (24k RT) - Cost (after $125 credit) $109 plus 24k miles
Option 5- Buy 1 main cabin, use points for 2 seats - Cost (after $125 credit) $164 plus 24k miles
Option 6- Use points for all 3 seats - Cost 40k miles (price bumps w/ 3 traveling) and $30 fees - but then none of the $125 is used, or very little (if i can pay fees w/ it).

The perk of the main cabin is the ability to reschedule I think. The perk of points is that I can easily cancel. I try to do these vacas to NC as cheap as possible. The hotel I do a Holiday Inn Express for free on points (and the 4th night is free). With the increase to everyday spending, it might be worth using more points, IDK.

HELP!

Yes and the agent I spoke with was completely unhelpful. First time I've been really disappointed with SW.

Try twitter. I had a problem a couple of years ago on a Hawaii flight that changed and the agent wouldn’t help me. I tweeted to SWA that this poor customer was uncharacteristic and somebody replied right away and they got me fixed up.

Okay I'm all kinds of questions this morning....The AA Citi Biz fine print says this "American Airlines AAdvantage® bonus miles are not available if you have received a new account bonus for a CitiBusiness® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® account in the past 48 months."

We all know the grAAvy train stopped in 2019. I got a card in 10/2018 AND got a bonus w/ it. I closed it and opened another in 2019, but was not a lucky person and did NOT get a bonus. So from their fine print, I'll have passed the 48 mos in 11/22. So I could apply and get a bonus, right? Just looking at how I restock my AA miles, LOL.

I called Chase this morning. I was put through to the recon department (I think). The rep didn't ask any questions; put me on hold for several minutes, then said that they had made their decision but it had to go to another department for approval. Is this normal? They said that I could call back on Wednesday to get the decision. Said there were no issues with my account but would not indicate if the decision was approval or denial.

Also called AmEx for a retention offer on my Hilton biz ($95 AF just posted). Was offered $100.00 credit to keep the card open and I took it. If dh has a holiday party this year I want that card open to charge the Embassy Suites that he puts his employees up at for 2 nights for the party. Also have a few Hilton stays booked (on points) this year, but will carry it with me in case I have any room charges.

If it were me, and on the assumption that you are otherwise going to lose the credit to expiry, then I probably choose option 4 if I think it highly unlikely I will need to cancel or change, and option 5 if I think there is a reasonable possibility I will need to cancel/change.

Yeah I'm leaning towards 5. It's easier to "eat" the cost of 1 main ticket vs 3, LOL. And yes, I'll lose the credit if I don't use it on this trip. Normally I like to hoard my AA miles for my mental sanity, but 12k isn't a huge hit to the miles bucket, LOL. Maybe there will be another unicorn offer I can actually jump on to restock them.

If you have a Wells Fargo card, the 15% back on groceries offer is back. It's a little different from before - 15% back on groceries and restaurants, with a 1500 max PER TRANSACTION (i.e. $100 to reach the max). On DoC there are dps that it can be used repeatedly.

Looking for some advice on which cards to keep open and what to apply for next for some upcoming expenses.

I am currently at 3/24 (assuming that a biz card does not count. If it does, I'd be at 4/24):

-Chase SW Priority - before 2015 (not sure of exact date, but 2015 is as far back as statements go on my app). Just submitted for upgrade to get 5k points - not a lot, but I just need a few more for flights I'm looking at.
-Chase Slate - 12/2016 - don't use often, unless there is a promotion or offer on the account that is useful to me, so possibly close?
-Chase Sapphire - 6/2019 - my primary card, to buildup URs - want to keep for now to use global entry credit for one of my kids & to keep building URs
-Chase SW Performance Biz: 5/2021
-Amex Platinum: 1/2021 - want to keep for now, as I am renewing my passport & then want to use the global entry credit
-Amex Rose Gold 3/2021 - possibly close once my anniversary hits. We generally use the uber credits & dining credits which mostly offset the annual fee, but otherwise nothing special here.
-BOA Amtrak - 10/2021
-BOA CT Bar Association - I've had this since around 1998. Seldom use it, but I've held it for so long I worry about the hit to my credit if I close it, since it will greatly reduce the average age of my accounts

I'm going to owe taxes (which will have to be paid by 4/15) and also have a long weekend to WDW planned in late March to visit DD who is doing the DCP this semester, so I can probably manage to hit $7,000 - $9,000 in spend easily in the short term, and would love to be able to hit a good sub with those expenses. Can't go with CSR until 2023 (at which point I'm thinking I'll PC my CSP then do a MDD if it still works then).

My main goal is points for travel. I like the flexibility of URs since I have the option to transfer to a number of providers, or book on the portal. Hoping to plan a couple of big trips in the next couple of years, but no definitive time frame yet - I was supposed to take oldest DD to Italy & Greece in 2020 for her high school graduation, and had to scrap it due to covid, so we still want to do that, although time frame is a bit up in the air due to her schedule. Younger DD is graduating high school this year and has said she'd like to go to Bora Bora (which I've warned her may be a pipe dream :P). Our primary airport is Bradley (Hartford), although Providence is a pretty easy alternative, and for a bigger trip I'd be willing to consider flying out of NYC (JFK or LGA) or Boston. I have a few Marriott points, but not many (around 20,000)

From the small amount of research I've doe so far, I'm think maybe the CIC - $7500 spend for 75,000 URs makes sense for a new card. I don't think I'd have enough spend for the CIP.

TIA for any advice!

And here with another "question". I need to spend $2900 to get my $8k FNC from the Hilton offer (by 2/28). I'm trying to figure out ways I can do this. I already paid my insurance w/ it. Taxes are all paid (until fall) plus can't use Amex. Utility bills can't be Amex. I've been funneling everyday expenses on the card. But now is crunch time. Any suggestions? I don't want to pay my cell phone with it because I get coverage w/ my CFF. I think the only bill I can pay is my cable bill. I have 0% interest on the Surpass until June, so I don't mind prepaying items right now, but I'm not sure what I can pay. I've asked my mom if she has any bills coming up, LOL. And I told the BF feel free to use my card vs his (he laughed and said, no I want the points....GRRR).

I've debated throwing in a gift card at Kroger, etc.

The CIC is a good option…..if you would take advantage of the 5x categories…office supply stores, internet etc

If you aren’t…the CIU has the same sign up bonus and spend but you get 1.5 URs on the spend instead of the base 1 on the CIC

If you have a P2 with a CIU, CIC or CIP remember to use a support link from from them so they get 20k URs

It looks like you are 3/24, so the CIC would be my suggestion. You really can't go wrong with URs.

As for which cards to keep, I would keep your BOA CT card, specially if it doesn't have an annual fee. I would close any cards that you don't use that have AFs.

I would ask for a retention offer on the Gold now, that way if you do get an offer you can close it when the 2023 AF hits.
Remember that you have to keep the card for 12 months after you accept the retention offer and you can only get a retention offer every 13 months for each card, so you could potentially ask for another retention offer in March of 2023. You can also ask about the retention offer on your platinum card, you could always downgrade to a Green card next year.

I've debated throwing in a gift card at Kroger, etc.

HELP! I think I have about $900 in pending charges (not sure if that was in the $2900 they told me I needed to spend). How about $2,900 in Girl Scout cookies?
What about just VGC at the grocery store? Prepay Netflix?

Happened to check AA and found JAL biz flights for our outbound! :cheer2: Pretty sure I didn't see it before, so maybe a cancellation or hold release. We have to leave 2 days later than I wanted, but thinking it's worth it. Flight is out of Seattle, but was able to get the connecting on the same ticket. Was short 1445 miles lol, so I transferred from Bonvoy. Hope it makes it over in 48 hours, which is supposed to be the usual case. Otherwise, buying for $75 or transferring from DH for $30 isn't too bad. The AA 5 day hold is very nice. First time using the Bonvoy transfer and was happy to see that they don't make you do it in increments of 1000 and I could do the exact amount.

More retention DPs lol. Tried again for DH's second plat, a few days after the AF posted. Still getting the 40k for $3000 spend. But since we took the AU offer on the card, pushed me over the edge and decided to take the offer. It would probably be cutting it close on the AU offer to close the card in time for the AF refund.

Tried again for the Bonvoy biz retention. STILL not transferred. Third time now. Was told no offers. When I asked to be transferred to Business Membership Consulting, was told that they can only help when there are offers on the account. Huh. I guess that could be true. I think I've always had some sort of offer before and was always transferred. I might try asking to be transferred right away next time.
