I haven't been this excited about my birthday since I turned 21! COMPLETE

Interesting update. That prosciutto and melon plate looks amazing (and you're right - why isn't it on the appetizer menu?), but I don't like the sound of your server's grudge. He may have been right that the recipe hasn't changed, since execution can vary on a daily basis. But that's no reason to start (and continue) treating you with an attitude. :sad2:

Uh oh I have a feeling this went really good or really awful? First I hope Brenda's foot/ankle was okay and not too painful.
Geez I don't get the snarky attitude of your server it's not like he made the bread personally. The chef trying to make it right and beyond only would please all of you and in turn his possible increase in tip and your parties dining experience. His comment and attitude sounds like he used to work at 50's prime time : )
But wow prosciutto and melon app. looks amazing as does the cheese app. and other appetizers so a good start food wise and the portion size look generous.

I'm gonna vote the meal turns out terrific because the server gets fired at the end for his tasteless attitude ; )

FLYING FISH CAFE - PART 2

I believe that it was about this time during our meal that Michael returned and brought Beth with him. She had not had much sleep the night before with packing and such and then had a very early flight out that morning. Consequently she was quite tired and had laid down for a quick nap before dinner but had fallen into a deep sleep. I'm kind of remembering now that Beth had left behind her phone at ESPN, where she had spent some time with Hunter & Paula that afternoon and they had possession of it. This would explain why we were unable to reach her by phone. But regardless of whether this was true or my memory is playing tricks on me, the final outcome remains the same. Our entire group of 6 was now present and we proceeded to order our entrees...

I had made a plan with Brenda to share the Signature Entree Duo. Brenda wanted the steak and I wanted only the Red Snapper part of the duo...

Idaho Potato-wrapped Red Snapper over a Rich Leek Fondue with a Veal Glace de Viande and Red Wine-Cassis Butter Reduction

This is my second favorite seafood entree at WDW, second only to the salmon at Artist Point. During my second visit to Flying Fish back in May 2011 I ordered this and ever since then I haven't been able to order anything else there. The smaller portion that you receive with the duo is actually the perfect size for me though, so I was very happy that it worked out for me to share with Brenda.

Since Beth was seated next to me at the table, I got to see up-close what she chose for her entree. She not only allowed me to take a photo of it but also insisted that both Brenda and I have a taste.

And one more, this time a close-up shot, because these sushi rolls were so darn photogenic...

I'm not 100% certain but I believe this was the Yellowfin Tuna Tartare and Crispy Tempura Tuna-Vegetable Sushi Roll that is listed in the Appetizer section of the menu.

Hopefully Beth will jump in (sometime after she and Wil return from their current trip to Disney World) and confirm this, as well as give you her thoughts regarding this dish. As for my opinion, well first off I must tell you that previously the thought of eating raw tuna (or any other fish) made me queasy. :crazy2: But this looked beautiful, its appearance was actually much more appetizing than my cooked fish. So with Beth's assurance that it was delicious, I ventured into the previously uncharted waters of raw fishies :fish: and took a small bite of one of her sushi rolls...and it wasn't disgusting! So I now know that I can take a bite or two of raw fish without losing the rest of my dinner. And who knows, maybe one of these days you will be reading my review of a plateful of sashimi...but I wouldn't hold your breath. :lmao:

Ok, that was the good, but now for the bad. :worried: Through the process of ordering and receiving our entrees, our relationship with our server continued to deteriorate. In fact, even before our entrees were ordered, Hunter had had enough of our server and stated that he would place his order directly with the chef.

Though Beth is not the complaining type, not long after our entrees were delivered she apparently reached her breaking point. She had had a wonderful dinner at Flying Fish just one week earlier and had sang its praises to us earlier that day. So feeling both disappointed and embarrassed that she had highly recommended Flying Fish, she decided it was time to express her feelings to the manager.

And the manager listened and took immediate action. :thumbsup2 He came to our table and apologized for the poor service which we had received up to this point. He replaced our server with one who had a personality which was much more compatible with our group. The manager assured us that our new server was much more experienced and would take very good care of us for the remainder of our meal. And I'm happy to say that his promise was fulfilled. Our new server was friendly and seemed at ease with us, yet still acted in a professional manner. Oh, and as a side note, it seems that our first server had only been employed at Flying Fish for a couple of weeks...which pretty much invalidates his statement that the bread was the same as it had always been, doesn't it? ;)

With the tension and drama now over, I was able to relax and enjoy my dessert. Unfortunately I completely forgot to take a photo of the dessert menu, but hopefully either Brenda or Paula took one. Since I already knew exactly what I wanted, I'm not sure if I even looked at the menu. During our dinner here in December we had each gotten to sample this After-Dinner Dessert Cocktail...

Peanut Butter Freeze with Kahlúa, Baileys Irish Cream, Crème de Banana, Dark Crème de Cacao, and Peanut Butter

I loved this and was greatly looking forward to having it again...only this time the full-size version.

This was again delicious!! :thumbsup2

One more photo, this one taken by our new server toward the end of our meal...

But I promised you a surprise ending, so it's not time for me to deliver. Soon after the above photo was taken, we were told by our server that our entire meal had been comped. That's right folks...wine flight, appetizers, entree, dessert cocktail, all free. And that was just my share of what we had consumed. Once a little of the shock had worn off, I began calculating in my head what my bill would have been so that I could leave our server an appropriate tip. I estimated that my dinner would have been around $100. Add to this 5 more people and our combined bill could have easily surpassed the $500 mark. So now you know why I am still baffled by this dinner and its surprise conclusion. The problem began with such a minor thing, in the grand scheme of things it was "nothing", and if our innocent question/comments regarding the bread had been handled appropriately by our server then it would have ended there. Instead this "nothing" ended up becoming something...something which required the attention of the chef, the manager, and ultimately having our $500+ bill comped.

As I said in the beginning of this review, I left the Flying Fish Cafe that night wondering "what the heck just happened here?" :confused3 More than two months later, my only answer to this question is that it was...

"Much Ado About Nothing"

So in conclusion, all the food that I had that night at Flying Fish was delicious and our second server, the chef, and the manager, all went above and beyond to make everything else right. Therefore, I will most definitely return to Flying Fish Cafe. In fact, I already have plans to dine there with Linda (Linda67) during my October trip and am very much looking forward to it. But don't be surprised though, Linda, if I'm a little leery of the bread...in fact, I think I might just skip it. ;)

Next up: My First Ever Visit to Jelly Rolls

Wow about Flying Fish! You should totally write an email to thank the chef! That was nice that you didn't have to pay for it! The meal looked fantastic too! That is my favorite signature!

Wow, just WOW!!! That is awesome. I should say that your first server just needs a bit more training on keeping his feelings/attitude to himself to make it in that business. But, to the managers credit, he/she took care of it in a way to make sure there was repeat customers, which is the most valued results that a restaurant wants. He went all the way to satisfy his customers. Kudos to the chef as well. Wonder what happened to the first server???

Glad there are still some people out there who understand customer service. Way to go flying fish. And way to go you for trying the sushi!

Wow, I certainly wasn't expecting such a positive ending - looks like everything turned around once the manager got involved! :goodvibes Glad to hear it worked out and that the food was very good (ignoring the bread).

I was a server in college and just can't believe the attitudes and poor service that we all occasionally experience while out. Especially shocking is to get that kind if service at a signature restaurant is totally unacceptable. However the restaurant made it right and am I so happy for you all they did that. This place is on my bucket list and I really want to try that snapper dish, it sounds so delicious!!

Glad it ended up being a great meal after all, it could of went south pretty quickly with a snarky waiter. So to get a wonderful new server and entire bill comp was a super plus : ) I have to say by looking at all your pictures it looked like an amazing meal but even a great meal with attitude can sore a meal ... So happy that was not the case.

Barb I think you pretty much nailed what happened that night! The server was definitely snippy and had an attitude. I still think it was only bread dude! We're pointing out that something is wrong here not calling your baby ugly! :confused3 We would have gladly ignored that it was horrible and moved on but how the server reacted and the series of events and attitudes that followed put the entire dining experience into a tail spin.

I'm so glad that we shared that duo entrée since it sounds like it was fabulous for both of us!

I'm with you about the sushi. I figured I didn't spit it out so it wasn't horrid. I'm pretty proud of myself for that. :thumbsup2

I'm bringing Em to Flying Fish in a couple weeks and I hope to have a much better experience.

My ankle was swollen and tender for the first 24 hours but after that it was fine. :)

WOW!! That was a horrible experience at a fabulous restaurant but I'm so glad that the manager replaced your server..

and WOW! I can't believe he comp'd your whole meal!

We've eaten at FF on our last trip and it was already on the list for the next one!!

The recipe has changed. It used to be a sourdough but is now a potato bread, at least it was in late May when we were there. They moved away from the sourdough this past Fall.

Yes Barb, I meant in costume. Last year I wrote a dress and heels, though many people were much more causal.

On the edge of my seat for Flying Fish part II.

I had no idea that the F & W Classic was for some a "dressy" event. Would you say there were more people who were dressed up or casually dressed? I'm so glad you mentioned this or I probably would not have thought about this in advance. :thumbsup2

:rotfl: at Gollum! But, I admit, I can relate. In Disneyland I always stock up on treats from either Pooh Corner or Main St, because it is a little taste of Disney when I'm home. Nothing else compares!! I will be stocking up at WDW also, I'm sure of it. :thumbsup2

Thank you...I'm glad there is someone else who understands my Disney snack obsession!

Wow. I'm so sorry your server copped an attitude about the bread. Personally, I've never cared for the FF bread and there have been times when I've told them to not even bring it.

I'm hoping that the service gets better for you. I've only had top-notch service at the Flying Fish.

During my 2nd visit to Flying Fish (this was my 5th) I had a server that was a bit on the strange side but he was great compared to this one.

Regarding the bread, I believe that we came to the conclusion that the bread was missing salt. Which is kind of ironic since you often see people complaining that their food at Disney is overly salted. ;)

Hmmmm. What an interesting start to your FF review. Looking forward to the next installment! That prosciutto and melon has me drooling this morning!

I have had the chocolate covered pineapple at KK and it is absolutely yummy and definitely a step above the others on property because of the added layer of caramel! I cannot wait to get one in the Fall!

The prosciutto and melon was delicious, the best I've had since my trip to Italy. It would be a shame if it doesn't ever make an appearance on their menu.

And your recommendation has clinched it...a KK chocolate and caramel covered pineapple treat is definitely in my future. :thumbsup2

Wow. A question about the bread recipe is no reason to be rude to the people you're serving.

I have to believe that there was something else going on with our server that night that caused his bad behavior. Perhaps it was something that had nothing at all to do with us??? :confused3 I just can't imagine that someone would get that bent out of shape over a question/comment about the bread.

I'm really hoping your meal didn't crash and burn, but I have a bad feeling..

I'm also hoping you didn't let Mr Attitude off without complaining about him.

You probably have already read Part 2 which has the answers to your comments...but thankfully we did avert that crash! [said with a huge sigh of relief ;) ]

I'm just perplexed by the service at Flying Fish lately. I'm hoping your experience got better but from our past two meals there I'm doubtful. It's just so very strange to me that the server would have such an attitude about you having a negative opinion about the bread :confused3 Why does he even care about how you like or dislike the bread?

The prosciutto and melon platter looks absolutely delicious though! That's one of my favorite combinations :thumbsup2

Yes, very strange. I really think our server had some other issues going on there that we weren't aware of. I guess we will never know. :confused3

:sad2:

I can't help but think that there was something else that put a big chip on our server's shoulder that night other than our comments regarding the bread. If not, then I think his career as a server will be short-lived.

The food was great throughout the meal, once we got past the bread. As for everything else, you know what they say, "All's well that ends well." :thumbsup2

I'm gonna vote the meal turns out terrific because the server gets fired at the end for his tasteless attitude ; )

Well, you were at least half right. Not sure what happened to our server though. I just hope I don't run into him again next time. ;)

I'll get to the comments from Flying Fish - Part 2 tomorrow and then post my next review. But it's past my bedtime now, so good night and sweet Disney dreams! :cloud9:

Wow....talk about being completely overcompensated!

You didn't like the bread turns into this? Dang..... :confused3

Wow, interesting FF review Barb!
Are you sure we are doing the right thing dining there in October? :scratchin
We've only dined there once previously and the service was pretty poor
What a shame that your server fanned the flames of the situation when it could have been dealt with and forgotten about so easily :firefight

Wow about Flying Fish! You should totally write an email to thank the chef! That was nice that you didn't have to pay for it! The meal looked fantastic too! That is my favorite signature!

Yes, the food at FF was awesome, as were the chef and manager. I'm very happy that they didn't allow one bad apple to spoil the bunch.

Oh, and I loved following you on Instagram during your Disneyland trip. Great photos! I hope you will post some on the No Longer Live Thread, unless you are planning to do a separate dining or trip report??

Wow, just WOW!!! That is awesome. I should say that your first server just needs a bit more training on keeping his feelings/attitude to himself to make it in that business. But, to the managers credit, he/she took care of it in a way to make sure there was repeat customers, which is the most valued results that a restaurant wants. He went all the way to satisfy his customers. Kudos to the chef as well. Wonder what happened to the first server???

I think you hit the nail on the head, Karla. From his very defensive reaction to our innocent question/comment and the bad attitude which followed, I think that he lacks training and experience. A simple, courteous reply would have ended all this right then and there. But for some reason (possibly something that had nothing at all to do with us), the bread thing seemed to unravel him. :confused3

Glad there are still some people out there who understand customer service. Way to go flying fish. And way to go you for trying the sushi!

Thanks Kari! Although I'd had sushi rolls before, since my oldest daughter loves sushi, I'd never before tried any with raw fish. So now that that is crossed off my list, maybe next trip I'll try the snails :snail:...um, I mean escargot at the F & W booth in France. :lmao:

Wow, I certainly wasn't expecting such a positive ending - looks like everything turned around once the manager got involved! :goodvibes Glad to hear it worked out and that the food was very good (ignoring the bread).

Yes, I thought that ending might come as a surprise to everyone. It sure took me by surprise when it happened!

I hope you do give Flying Fish a try sometime Lori and that it is all-round great experience! :thumbsup2

Flying Fish looks amazing! Haven't been there in awhile. Need to go back.

Hope you are able to get back there again and that it is amazing! :)

That is very true. No matter how great the food is, if the service is bad then it really does affect your overall satisfaction with the meal. I'm so glad that this dinner was pulled out of the fire! ;)

My ankle was swollen and tender for the first 24 hours but after that it was fine. :)

I will eagerly look forward to hearing about your second Flying Fish experience. Hopefully all will go smoothly this time.

And now that we have conquered our fear of raw fish, how about snails next? :snail: Yea, maybe not. :lmao:

WOW!! That was a horrible experience at a fabulous restaurant but I'm so glad that the manager replaced your server..

and WOW! I can't believe he comp'd your whole meal!

We've eaten at FF on our last trip and it was already on the list for the next one!!

Hope you have a great dinner at Flying Fish! :thumbsup2

Wow! What a turn around to your meal!

Yes, it was quite a surprise ending! ::yes::

Great story and ending :thumbsup2

To be honest, it was one of the most difficult reviews that I've ever had to write because this dinner was just so odd and hard to explain, especially since I still don't fully understand what happened here myself. Hopefully I did an okay job and was fair to the all of the parties involved. But I'm glad it's done now and I can move on to some easier reviews. ;)

The recipe has changed. It used to be a sourdough but is now a potato bread, at least it was in late May when we were there. They moved away from the sourdough this past Fall.

I think it was the potato bread that we had during our dinner (Paula & Hunter were also there) in December and thought it was good. We came to the conclusion that this batch just seemed to be in need of some salt. :confused3

Wow....talk about being completely overcompensated!

You didn't like the bread turns into this? Dang..... :confused3

Yes, it began with an innocent comment regarding the bread and would have ended right there had our server's response been appropriate. It was really no big deal for us! But he somehow managed to turn this into a big deal, and I have no idea why? :confused3 I think we were all perfectly content with the manager's apology and the switching out of our server. Our bill being comped came as a total surprise to everyone. Was it overcompensation? Yes, to most that would seem to be the case. However, I assume that the manager took notice of the fact that three of us were taking photos of all of our food throughout this dinner. Now we could have just been doing this for our scrapbooks but there was also the possibility that at least one of us was a reviewer for a popular Disney food blog or perhaps even a big time food critic. In reality neither of these were true, but putting myself in the manager's shoes I think I would have not taken any chances and done the same thing as he did. So in other words, what seems like an overreaction to us, was probably just a good business move by the manager. ;)

Wow, interesting FF review Barb!
Are you sure we are doing the right thing dining there in October? :scratchin
We've only dined there once previously and the service was pretty poor
What a shame that your server fanned the flames of the situation when it could have been dealt with and forgotten about so easily :firefight

Flying Fish is still among my favorite Disney restaurants, this odd experience has not changed my opinion. My feelings regarding this meal at Flying Fish are, "All's well that ends well." The food was really good and everything else was set right so I'm eager to move on and have a new experience at FF to review. Hopefully our dinner in October will be a great one! :thumbsup2
