I have a question for the moderators

What was your motive in bringing up their financial situation?

I asked the poster to give tips on how to get out of debt.

The thread was about how much debt people have and he/she posted that they were out of debt. And a lot of other people posting on the thread were in debt. Since I remembered her/him talking a while back about how much debt he/she was in, I thought he/she could give people advice since he/she is now debt free. The mod seemed to have no problem with the motive behind my post, just the specific info that I had taken from a previous post.

Agreed.

I've been around the Internet since before Al Gore invented it; :goodvibes whatever personal information one offers for public consumption is fair game. Most likely, the "accused" DON'T offer up their personal affairs IRL to close relatives/friends/collegues because they KNOW they'd get called on it.

To "protect" them (by post deletion, etc.) in an environment such as the DIS is a disservice to all.

Whilst (I love that word from across the pond!) I appreciate ya'll wish to keep this a family site with pixie dust & positive thinking, it's an impossible quest given the vast membership and topics that arise.

(shrug) I don't profess to have an answer, other than to allow people to "slug it out" on their own.

ETA: If one later regrets posting some personal information, perhaps this is a good lesson NOT to post such personal information.

I don't agree, we have had a lot of people register with their full name and we will change it for them. If someone was to bring their real name up again we would delete it. We aren't going to chase every little thing someone wishes they hadn't posted but we also aren't going to allow people to use something a person regrets posting to beat them up.

I wonder if the person you were talking about asked for it to be removed. Maybe they regretted posting it in the first place & did not want the information posted again.

That could be, but then you would think they would have removed the orginal post that she made.

But how do you know someone regrets a post they made? If they regretted it, wouldn't they go back and edit it?

we are talking about 2 different things on this thread. One is where the original material was deleted. If the original material is still there I would suspect it is the context in which it is being used. To get an answer to that you would need to PM the moderators involved

Will do, thanks.

I happened to be reading the thread you are referencing and I might be able to shed some light. I think the problem is with the search feature itself. When you look up that posters history, it appears that search shows a clip of the original post. If it's okay, I'll do a cut and paste here of what I mean:

I just wanted to offer encouragement to the OP. I feel your pain yes I do. We are about in credit card debt have a mortgage and owe about on an Escalade. My husband made pretty good money but recently found out his salary will b ...

Now, if you click and look at the post, it shows it was edited by that user in March I think and they removed all the dollar references. My guess is that when you brought up the info in the thread today, that user requested that the Mod edit out the dollar figures. With so many posters hitting the "report" button lately and claiming personal attack, this one actually seemed to be handled the right way.

Now that makes sense, and if that is what happened then I understand and have no problem with it.

But if you were able to do a search, and the original info on the thread came up, then how do you know the person edited out? I know it will say edited at the bottom, but then wouldn't the stuff she took out not be there anymore?

Ok if you knew those mods edited it out then no it's not all right :)
I edited it for you though

From the search itself, it doesn't appear that you'd know at all. The only way to see it, is if you clicked on the link and actually re-opened that old thread. Considering the information that you were trying to verify was right there on the search page, it makes sense that you wouldn't open it and see that the post had been edited. That's why I thought that this situation was handled the best way by the mod. As you pointed out and the way I took it, you weren't trying to beat on anyone, you brought up a valid point. Your post wasn't deleted and you didn't catch a dose of the personal attack flu that seems to be going around lately  .

I'm sorry, I wasn't clear...I didn't mean personal information as in their full name, but personal information as to their finances & disclosures to bankrupcy as mentioned in the above examples. I noticed that particular "editing" (along with a recent respectful post of mine in another thread) and am merely questioning the reasoning behind it. It confuses me, along with other people, evidently.

I'll continue to push the envelope (sarcastically) to make my point: Let's say I've killed both my parents, but l post on the DIS looking for sympathy because I'm now an orphan...will I be protected, too?

Yeah, I concur that's an extreme example. But go back & look at my records on the DIS: I've NEVER been disrespectful and anything less than helpful when I can add something positive to a discussion. Doesn't mean I haven't READ here. A LOT. And held my tongue, when there are people posting personal information that NEED to be called on it.

I just think there should be some...I dunno..."warning" in the TOS to newbies as to what people may expect when posting off-the-wall personal information about themselves. In addition to updated rule-changes for us old-timers.

I don't understand the "need" to call people on anything. Color me confused I guess......... :confused3

Good thing I got my flu shot this year, it must be working :lmao:

Tammi...off-topic, but why are you "Sad that I will no longer be able to read about Magical Trips and Vow Renewals"?

I have questions too, but since I already have points, I'm afraid I'll get
