I have a question for the moderators

I've noticed on some threads that people are being edited and told they are not allowed to give information about other posters. But the information they are putting out there are direct quotes from the poster, often times in other threads.

Can you please explain to me why it is not ok to reference something someone else said. If the poster had wanted that information to be kept a secret, they would not have posted it on a public forum. But since they did, it seems as though they would have no problem with people quoting it.

Do the rules state that people are not allowed to reference quotes from one thread in a different thread?

The best way to get an answer is to send an email to admin@wdwinfo.com or pm one of the webmasters for an answer. I would imagine that the original poster would be doing this and not someone who just read the thread.

Was wondering what the rule was about that too. I thought any info posted from a poster about themselves is obviously ok to quote to talk about. A poster talked about something to do with their financial situation a while back. They then posted again about their situation and someone else brought up what the poster originally talked about. Well everyones posts got edited to take out the reference. Seems kind of silly and actually is ludicrous to take out something that the poster has already talked about. It was deemed as personal info yet it was info the own poster had posted herself.

Well that would happen if it was information that was not allowed to be posted in the first place. It wouldn't make sense to delete the original info and not the quotes. Hard to say without seeing the orignal threads

can you give me an example?

On a thread on the budget board people were talking about how much debt they were in. One of the posters said he/she had no credit card debt. I remembered her from some threads a few months back, where she had been in a lot of debt and was going to declare bankruptcy. I thought it would be very helpful for people to learn how she was able to get out of debt. So I posted that I remembered that she had been $50,000 in debt and was going to declare bankruptcy and asked her to give tips on how she got out of it.

The moderator edited the post and took out the $50,000 and bankruptcy part (they left the rest of the message). But both of these I took directly from another post she had made a few months ago on a different thread(I did a search of posts because I wanted to make sure I had the right person).

I can understand if she had never posted this information that me putting it on there would be wrong. But she posted it, so why is it not ok to use it?

So let me give you the example. A poster talked about filing for bankruptcy a while back. The poster then posts again about her financial situation. Another person says that is great you are doing so well after filing for bankruptcy. That was the whole thing. The posts got edited. How is that not allowed? What information would not be allowed? The poster talking about her own bankruptcy or the poster that brought it back up? Are we supposed to just forget everything everyone talks about in previous posts and pretend we don't know anything about them? It is a thread on the budget board about not having credit cards. It would just be nice to know what to post and what not. This place gets more confusing by the hour. :confused3

Maybe the mod didn't understand that you were trying to be helpful and thought you were trying to be mean?

It seems odd that all of a sudden a posters previous posts cannot be referenced.

If this is how the boards are now being moderated, I would think that the WMs would have to disable the search feature as well as the quote feature.

Is that where we are headed?

After something the mod posted, that crossed my mind, but then I thought the mod would have delted my entire post. Instead, in the edit comments the mod wrote to take out personal information about a poster. But that poster had posted the personal information, so I don't get it. The moderator didn't seem to have a problem with my post, she just had a problem with the specific information I had put in the post.

I'd just ask the mod what the deal was. :confused3 You got me.

That's not happening :) If a post is deleted or edited THEN the quotes will go obviously but the story here is not making sense to me. That's why I suggested asking the mods on that board

Can you at least tell me if we are allowed to pull quotes from one thread into another thread, or is that against the rules?

Normally yes, there are some exceptions, for example if it starts to look like advertising

I didn't actually take a quote from a different thread. I took information from a thread that the person had posted (the specific amount of debt and the filing bankruptcy) and mentioned them in my post. The moderatore just took that part of the information out of my post:

My original post said something like:

I remember a few months back you posting that you were $50,000 in debt and about to declare bankruptcy.

After the moderator edited it, the post said:

I remember a few months back you posting that you were in debt.

The mod left the rest of my post alone. And in the comment line the mod put to take out personal information about a poster

But I don't understand why it was wrong, since the poster had posted it in a different thread to begin with.

I wonder if the person you were talking about asked for it to be removed. Maybe they regretted posting it in the first place & did not want the information posted again.

Agreed.

I've been around the Internet since before Al Gore invented it; :goodvibes whatever personal information one offers for public consumption is fair game. Most likely, the "accused" DON'T offer up their personal affairs IRL to close relatives/friends/collegues because they KNOW they'd get called on it.

To "protect" them (by post deletion, etc.) in an environment such as the DIS is a disservice to all.

Whilst (I love that word from across the pond!) I appreciate ya'll wish to keep this a family site with pixie dust & positive thinking, it's an impossible quest given the vast membership and topics that arise.

(shrug) I don't profess to have an answer, other than to allow people to "slug it out" on their own.

ETA: If one later regrets posting some personal information, perhaps this is a good lesson NOT to post such personal information.

I was confused too mumom on that thread. Seemed it was ok for that person to brag about being debt free in just a few months until someone reminded her how she became debt free. I thought it was pretty hypocritical and glad you found the old thread. Too bad everything has to be peachy keen now or will get censored.
