I guess the cast of Jersey Shore isn't white enough for A & F

The cast of the Jersey Shore isn't white at all. They're Oompa Loompa Orange last I checked.

I never heard of painfully white before. To the best of my knowledge I have been white for over 40 years and not once found it painful. Am I doing it wrong? Is there something I wasn't told when I was born?

I have heard people being called painfully ignorant....

I have heard people being called painfully obtuse.....

I even have heard of people being called painfully tone deaf to feelings of others...

Never heard that about skin color though and one would think if you called a someone of color, painfully black, that it might make for a painful experience afterwards.

I'm painfully tone deaf, when I sing it is painful for others to hear. Although I'm Irish with pretty fair skin, I don't think I'm painfully white to others though.

Yeah, I was wondering about that phrase as well.

Oh, I'm a good example of painfully white. I sunburn in just a few minutes. And the glare off my skin could give you a headache. I'm painfully, painfully white. I apologize to anyone whose retinas were burned by my legs.

Abercrombie & Fitch (I think they own Hollister too) has actually released the following particularly offensive request aimed at the a the Jersey Shore cast. So I've been to A & F and the best words I can use to describe their stuff is painfully white & upper middle class.
Seriously? "Painfully white?"

There is nothing wrong with being upper middle class. If you happen to not like white people or those you stick in the "upper middle class", that is your racism, your snobbery and your problem.

:upsidedow

What a disgusting comment.

Ethnocentricity is not only about race, its about prejudging anyone who is different in any way shape or form. While race is one form it is not the ONLY form of prejudice.... talk about only wanting to see what you want to see.

PS- its not my job or my intent to make people see things they don't want to see. That's why the world is still the way it is, I'd like to think people can change but I'm not holding my breath.

I'm just glad their stock took a header, say what you want about how it doesn't matter but obviously it does, the facts don't lie & the fact is their stock took a hit.

Yes but not for the reasons you are stating...I think you need a Business 101 course.

And yes the cast is "different", they are a stereotype. Are there Guidos and Guidettes like them out there, um yes but they are few and far btw. I went to the Jersey Shore during my college years, and I partied in quite a few clubs, the people like the cast, we ran into but they were a stereotype, most people that hung out and went to clubs varied greatly.

But like I said feel free to shop elsewhere. I know I do bc my teen is not into there stuff and shopping there for my niece gives me a royal headache!

I've heard of being painfully red (after a sunburn), but that's about it.

Talk about sone mid-week entertainment on the Dis - wowza!

I'm also "painfully white.". I'm Irish and I have 2 skin tones: Burned & Not Burned. But I digress.

I wouldn't want my company associated with JS either, so I don't blame them. But from articles & a quote I saw on People.com today, it sounds like they're more upset that the JS "kids" are implying a connection / endorsement with them.

Or they could be spinning this for the publicity. That's very possible.

I am an Italian from NJ who spends a lot of time at the Jersey Shore and I think that the cast of that show is a complete embarrassment. I don't find them to be an accurate representation of Italians or NJ residents. I do, however, agree with PP who pointed out that they are a great example of moronic trash.

This thread brought to you by Cresh! Toothpast to make your teeth so white they're painfully white!

Seriously though.. it's been over an hour and a half and the mods haven't shut this one down yet!?

Hear, hear -- and I've never even BEEN to NJ (unless you count changing planes at Newark.) The so-called stars of that show are the worst examples of bad taste and poor judgment run amok that I've ever seen.

This being Abercrombie, I'm sure that they are going for publicity, but I wouldn't blame ANY company for attempting to dissociate their products from anything connected with that show.

BTW, since when is the average Italian NOT Caucasian? :confused3

When LuvOrlando say's so. :confused3;)

Actually they are Caucasian, just not painfully caucasian.

I will say this, I have never seen the Dis so in agreement about a subject.

so thanks luvorlando! :thumbsup2

The photo shoot took place in Coney Island beach at night last fall. This is them waiting for their shoot.

Nice looking kids! Did AF/Hollister (can't remember which one you said this was) mind that your niece showed up wearing their competitor's clothes?

I remember applying for a job at The Limited in the mall when I was a teen and making sure I was wearing their stuff head to toe. I think I did that for a couple of other stores, too. It was a great way to convince my parents that I just HAD to have a new outfit from a few different stores! :rotfl:

And I guess A&F didn't mind the cast's trashy behavior when they were selling these shirts:

I'm not sure what I find more humorous, that A&F claims the Jershey Short cast is causing "distress" for the stores customers or those that think A&F is actually upset that the cast of this incredibly popular show is wearing their clothes and giving them free advertising.

A few weeks ago aeropostale mad a big fuss about the cast of teen mom wearing their clothes, so they ban them from doing so. I don't get why they wouldn't want the free advertising. Millions of people are watching these shows!! It seems like both aeropostale and A&F want lots of publicity by banning their clothes.

I was wondering this myself:confused3

Give me a break. Exaggerate much?

The cast of Jersey Shore is trash. A&F doesn't want to be associated with such trash. If you think you are in the same category as the Jersey Shore cast and are not welcome to buy their stuff, then you may want to reconsider your image.

As someone who grew up in NJ and going to the shore, I personally don't want to be associated with them either.

Agreed 100%.

I grew up in NJ, and I'm tired of having to explain to people who watch that idiot show that it is not what NJ is like, since these days the minute you mention that you're from NJ, they ask about that stupid show.

It used to be when you said you were from NJ, someone would always say "What exit?" Now, they say, "oh, like Jersey Shore." No, you idiot, it's not like Jersey Shore.

I worked in an A+F store before (in NJ no less and I'm half Italian and can range from painfully white to guido tan depending on the time of year but that is not really important). I was actually invited to participate in the class action lawsuit for their employment practices/sexism, etc.

I will say they were VERY concerned about the A+F look. Other retail stores want you to wear their clothes while working there of course but A+F took it it to a whole new level. Not only did you have to wear their clothes while working but you had to wear clothes that were in their store at that moment. You could not wear anything from a past season. If a kid walked up to you and wanted what you were wearing you had to be able to find it in the store. You had to wear J. Crew shoes. If you wore a tank it had to be layered with another tank. We were told to throw a football around the store and have fun because they wanted kids to want to be like us (wearing A+F from head to toe). It made it expensive to work there, lol. So what I'm thinking is that the way the Jersey Shore cast members wear the A+F clothes are totally not in line with the A+F style. Wearing their tees with fake tans, baggy sweats, big jewelry, and shiny white sneakers is not the style A+F tries to portray.

And I agree with others that it's probably more a publicity maneuver than a criticism on the casts' behavior.
