I got called for Jury Duty again... How many times have you been called.

I got called twice before I got married. Since I've been married, I've been called at least once every year. Some years I received 2 notices. Monday was our 24th anniversary.

Here we have to call the night before to see if we have to report. I've had to report every single time.

I've been on the jury only once.

And because I replied to this thread, according to our USPS Informed Delivery email today, I will be receiving yet another jury summons. That will be around summons number 28 or 29 since I've been married.

btw, DH has jury duty tomorrow. We know he'll have to report because he had it postponed during the school year because there were no subs.

Once, and I was picked, even though I work for an attorney in our small town, and I was the only one who mentioned a connection to one of the parties. It was fine, it was an interesting two days.

It was a matter of a grandmother harboring a runaway, a girl who was in my DD's grade and DD had been to her birthday sleepover previously (which was a total trainwreck btw and I never should have sent her).

I'll start a thread about winning the lottery, and you can reply to it... :-)

Only been picked one time several years ago to be part of the jury pool or whatever they call it. While I understand the process of trying to randomly pick people, it seemed like a huge waste of our time and could be done way more efficiently. Large number of us were on call each day for a week. As I remember had to call a phone # daily to see if you needed to show up. When we did, they told us how important our job was and then we all sat around in a large waiting room doing nothing for several hours. None of use actually got called to be on a jury and then we were told we could go home.
A lot of times that happens because they plan on going to trial and at the last minute to the sides work out a deal. I’ve had it multiple times where they’re getting ready to interview prospective jurors only to have to send us all home because of that.

Immediately after replying to this post, I went and checked Informed Delivery because I was worried about that 🤣

For some reason I get called for Jury Duty, Since I registered to vote at 18 until now , I have been called 10 times... Which is alot it seem to me.

I have never served on a Jury though..

They will not pick me due my brother being a retired deputy, and our close friends are both in law enforcement... When filling out the questionnaire I always check the box for yes... then I still get called, even though I know that they are not going to choose me....the minute they ask me if I know anyone in law enforcement, my answer is yes, Who my brother, and our good friends ... then they tell me I'm excused... so I have wasted a whole day, sitting around waiting to be excused...
They know this from the online questionnaire.. Why do they make me go in to answer something that they already know in advance, its like it's for show... Why bother making me come in there, when they know that they are going to excuse me. I guess just because you know someone in law enforcement they see as you can not make a unbiased decision and think for yourself.

I would gladly serve, and I would feel it would be a honor to serve...

Three times total. Twice in the early-mid 90s; first one, jurors weren't needed, and the 2nd, wasn't picked due to nature of case (in relation to my experiences). Third time was in the last year; wasn't needed.

DH has been called at least 5 or 6 times in the last two decades. Never made it to a trial (either by not being needed or not being picked) and once was for Federal court (never called him; and federal is for a full year!)

I was a total of 4 times--first we had just moved out of the county so that got me out of that one
next I just sat for a total of 2 days--very boring
third my number came up--got into the courtroom with everyone else--the longer I sat there the worse I was feeling--the judge mentioned aniexties but I thought no Im going to do this--trying to talk myself into that I can do it--the judge went onto something else but asked if there were any questions--by this time my heart was racing so hard it hurt--so I told the judge that he called me up and said I didnt look good and sent me home
this last time I had a dr app so I talked to the dr about it and she gave me a note that got me out of it--just had to send the note in--if I ever get called again I just need to get another note
I was so relieved
BTW what is the age for jury duty where you wont get called anymore

It's been a few times for me, and I've actually served on a couple of juries. Once I was actually eager to do it (summer vacation in college) but the prosecutor used a preemptory dismissal on me. I was in a room the last time with a lot of people asking to be excused.

I also get this weird situation where my zip code is across county lines, and both I and my wife have received summons for the next county. I used to fill in the excuse in other, but the last time I did that there was a specific excuse for not living in the county.

Wow, 10 times is a lot imo. I've only been called three times in my life and I've been eligible for almost 30 years. Once I had a newborn so I got a deferment or whatever they call it & I was never called back in. The other times I simply wasn't chosen to be on the jury.

DS just got his first summon for Federal jury duty. I never had that. Since he gets paid by his employer even if serving, he is OK with it.

I actually think it might be interesting IF you actually got to serve and not just sit around most of the day and get dismissed. That happened a few times to my brother.

Depends on the case. The one I sat on was a civil case with a lawyer suing his ex-law firm for wrongful termination. It was beyond dry.

The federal one I had to go in for was somebody suing the IRS. I didn’t get sat on that one, so no idea if it would have been interesting or not.

I am 64 and have received a summons 4 times. We have call in jury duty here, so only had to report twice. Got on a Civil Trial that lasted 6 1/2 weeks. My boss wasn't happy but it was almost like being on vacation.

We were just talking about this...my husband has jury duty this month. I've been registered since 18 like you, so about 30 years, and I have NEVER ONCE been called for jury duty.
Don't know why, wouldn't mind serving, but not complaining!
My husband seems to get called every 4-6 years it would seem.

Twice.

One time while I was studying for the bar exam. I called in and didn't need to report.

The second, I had to go in on a Thursday. I knew only one trial was picking a jury that day, so I knew which case it was for. I had to appear in that courtroom on another case at 9am. I was supposed to report at 9:30. Since I knew all the attorneys (there were two prosecutors and four defense attorneys), I was excused before I even reported because, as someone said, "you could poison the pool with a single sentence." Which is true. The case had gotten a LOT of press: https://medium.com/@deborahhalber/the-untidy-murder-of-craig-rideout-275506da6ced. It was eventually covered by dateline, but the show was SO edited the way they told the story wasn't exactly what happened. And I know that because I'd spoken with the detectives right after arrests were made.

If anyone is interested, the Dateline episode is called Devil's Bathtub. And here is an article explaining how the show left things out:

But still seems the process could be more efficient. Perhaps have a large pool of people who actually want to be on juries or perhaps are retired and looking for something to do. If you work, it tends to cause issues when you are tied up for maybe a week and have no idea when you will be released. It also sounded like if chosen for a jury, the case could go on for several days/weeks.

It can. And there are times it does suck. The one I sat on looked like it might go into the first week of the fall semester of my sophomore year of college.

But I don’t think the pool is big enough of people who would volunteer. And I would never want people who do it so much they become numb to things.

I get a summons once a year, never had to actually go in because when I call in the day before I've always been lucky enough to have my group dismissed. I think one time I forgot about it and got another thing saying because I missed it I need to come in on a certain date but same thing, called in the night before and my group was dismissed.

A jury of your peers would be ineffective if it was only those who volunteered or were ones who were retired. Jury duty isn't about some part-time gig and it's not about wanting to be on it. I mean would you, if your life was on the line, want your jury to comprise of people you just mentioned?

**Not to say juries are perfect, not to say that people on them always want to be there.

They already have the pool reduced by using registered voters and those who hold a DL same as Federal cases in my state and county.
