Hurt on Splash Mountain?

I couldn't disagree more.

I re-read the post, too, and the poster DID seem to be looking for support and advice on how to pierce the iron veil of the mouse to try to get help with his now temporarily disabled DSD.

Is it really so unheard of and impossible to believe that there is a glitch in the ride that could injure someone? Why is the first suspicion of some people that the girl is at fault?

And is it really so hard to understand that a family who spent $8,000 on a vacation would want some support/help from the business where they were injured so that they could continue to maximize their vacation? Can you imagine walking on crutches thru Disney. The one thing I remember about crutches is how much it exhausts you and hurts your underarms and palms.

Wheelchairs are no picnic either.

Add to that, the romanticized views that some people have of Disney, and the level of disappointment they feel is compounded by the anticipation and trust that the vacationer had that Disney would reward their loyalty and $$$$ with"magic".

There is nothing magic about getting the run-around from a claims office, nor in going to a board you have come to trust for both sharing a love of Disney and for advice on planning and navigating Disney and getting blasted.

It's truly sad the way some people reacted to his call for help and support. He wasn't asking for help with healing his SD foot...he wouldn't expect anyone here could do that...but why else would he have posted here except for the reason most everyone else posts here...for support and help with vacation planning.

It's not like his SD foot was bleeding all over the hotel room for goodness sake...he wasn't looking for medical help here. That would be obvious, wouldn't it?

I really don't get the hostility to this guy...I really don't. It really challenges my faith in human nature.

I think coming to this board to vent is something we have all done before whether it be for good or bad things that had happened. I agree that there will always be a few knuckle heads that will say something off kilter and the like but lets not forget why we are all here. We have a great tool to get help, give help or just plain ole give an opinion. At the very least we all know to look out for that little area where the poor girl got her foot stuck. I wish her the best of luck.

Thought I'd share my own injury story at WDW...

When I was 10, my whole family went to WDW, a big trip paid for by Grandma (lots of fun, stayed at the old Viscount -also had a b-day celebration on the old Empress Lilly).

After riding Journey Into Imagination, I went to exit on the moving walkway. I stumbled getting out of the ride vehicle, and my foot became jammed in between the cars and the track, which, of course, stopped the ride (I remember hearing some guy near the end of the ride swearing because he was mad that the ride stopped...how mortifying!). I was crying and really in a lot of pain.

I had a sprained foot and was pretty sore for a few days after the trip ended; however, my parents did not get upset at Disney or anything like that. I was taken to first aid, and we were given a wheelchair, and after turning it in, I got a free Disney dollar (which was the coolest part to me).

I hadn't thought of that in awhile; however, I thought it was kind of similar to the SM story, in that it was an unfortunate accident. Hopefully the girl will get well soon, and years from now, she won't be bitter with Disney, but will be obsessed with WDW, and planning to move to Orlando to be a CM, like yours truly :sunny:

While agree with you that the OP WAS looking for support about what to do next after all of that happened, what struck me as odd was why all the complaining about what Disney WASN'T doing for them...what the hotel WASN'T doing for them...what the hospital WASN'T doing for them. IMO, the step-father was making it more difficult on his entire family but worrying about what WASN'T being done for them, instead of taking care of everything themselves and worry about all the claims later. Why refuse the wheelchair from Disney? Still wondering about that...

Also, the OP admitted that at his job, if anything happens like that it goes straight to the claims department. If he knows the process of how all of this works, why is he so surprised that Disney acted the way they did (following procedure).

The biggest problem I have with all of this is posting your story on an internet message board and NOT expecting some negative feedback. I don't know what internet some of you are using, but I've never seen a message board that EVERYONE had the exact same opinions about EVERY subject matter. That's what makes message boards so fun. The OP (being an active member of these boards) should've known that he could possibly find some skeptical people responding to him. Especially about a ride that's been there so long without any "defects" being made public before.

I wish we lived in a world where everyone was supportive of everything we do at all times, but we don't. Some people have been scammed before, some people are suspicious by nature, some people are just naive. Message boards are no different than talking to a stranger or someone you know right in front of you. IMO, this type of situation is the same as someone posting a rumor that they heard from someone about a new ride, new theme park, etc...Some people believe them, some people question the rumor with plenty of skepticism, some people dismiss the OP with a laugh and a "yeah right"....Do I believe everything I read? Heck no. However, I don't believe in flaming anyone over anything, I feel we do have the right to question the situation, rumor, etc.

I'm glad the OP's step daughter is doing better, and I'm happy for him that the claims department is taking care of them.

I kindof agree with you here - you don't have to be on these boards long to know this is true. Especially when you are saying anything negative about Disney!

I have to say that when I broke two toes, I was unable to move around easily or painfree for weeks!!! There was no way I would have been able to get around WDW right after breaking them. Sure, I could have used a wheelchair. But I was at home, and stayed off my feet for a week, and took copious amounts of ibu for the pain. I can completely understand why the poor kid was not getting around easily. And it is hard to navigate a wheelchair if you aren't used to it.
I guess I'll be hoping to get a front car at Splash Mt next week so I can check it out for myself!!!

I will second what goofy4tink said. Last August I broke the big toe on my left foot about 2 weeks before I went to WDW, The toe had rotated a little but not enough to justify surgery, man did it hurt, my whole foot turned purple then black(size 14 shoe it was pretty ugly that much color) and I could hardly walk. Even after the 2 weeks I had to wear one of those ugly post op shoes with a wooden sole and use my cane part of the time. So I can see where she may not have been able to get around.

Now I agree with this!!! :thumbsup2

First to the OP
I hope your daughter is feeling better tel her to rest them toes so they heal fully and straight. Then go back and hit the parks full tilt.

RANT MODE ON

Or is there more nastiness on the boards lately then there use to be. I have been around for awhile, this is my second screen name because of other things going on in my life. And I have always loved to read these boards as an escape from the real world as well as learning and sharing about my love of WDW. When did we get so critical and worldly as to start taking shots at people, and to do so with what looks like as the specific purpose as to tweak them (my sons term).
I have seen people up in arms about pool hopping, reusing mugs, too many people in rooms etc and people would get judgmental and get on their moral soap box but to sit back and make personal attacks seems to be below this board and it's purpose. Seems like I am at work hearing the pot shots fly not the DIS boards.

Ok sorry off my soap box now

Must be something with Splash Mountain-----my son had an accident a week ago on Splash Mountain also, but it was HIS fault. He cracked his head pretty good on the concrete after he fell from swinging on the queue lines..........by the time we got to the boats, he was ready to ride, albiet with a HUGE lump on the back of his head!!

Thank you Dad! Well said!!! :thumbsup2
The nastiness seems to go in cycles around here. I have to take a break from the boards from time to time because it starts to bother me and that makes the Dis no fun!

ITA we're not all going to agree all the time but sometimes it just gets ugly for no reason.

I didn't want to go in that direction but man somebody had too, ugly is ugly no matter where it appears

Broken bones don't always show up on X-rays right away.

(the reason I know this is my niece has broken an arm twice in two years, and the breaks didn't show up on the first x-rays either time! weird, huh?)

One of My DSs closed the car door on my other DS's little finger. We rushed to a minor med, where they took an X-ray. They said that it was not broken. I made a big mistake by not taking him to a specialist for a follow-up visit. Not only did his finger turn out to be broken, it did not heal properly. He had to have surgery on his finger. It will never be perfectly straight.

Accidents do happen, and I really feel for the kid. That must have been really scary, not only going down the big splash with your foot stuck but also having the log flume taken apart to get unstuck.

What I do not understand is why people post here (I have read this on more than 1 occasion) when there is an emergency of some kind. I mean think about it, Something tragic happens, you go to your computer and write an entire post, wait for replies for advice. That makes absolutely no sense to me at all. Why not go to the front desk, ask for the manager of the resort and explain the emergency and what you need. I have experienced my share of emergencies at WDW (some health related some service related) and have ALWAYS been taken care of and all my needs were met and then some. Instead of posting to a message board, take matters into your own hands and take care of it. What can a person half way around the world do for you when all you have to do is find a manager at the resort who can lessen your stress.

We tried expaining it to the manager, the claims dept, and everyone else we were able to get a hold of. No one would do a thing. we were told even though she is in pain, we have to wait 5-7 day for an investigation to begin. That is why i posted here in case anyone had gone through something like this and knew where i could turn to or get in contact with someone else.

I just have to say I am so sorry this happened during your trip! I hope your stepdaughter feels better soon. When your foot hurts, your whole body hurts in my opinion. Also, we were at Pop and BWV the same time as you, kind of a coincidence. And don't apologize or explain yourself. For those of us that understand exactly where you are coming from, no explanations are necessary. For those who don't, nothing you say will make a difference as they probably won't change their mind about this or any other thing they think they know all about.

To some of these other posters who are making some pretty radical judgements, I would ask you to remember one thing. When your child is hurt, you want it made right. Nothing more, nothing less. And I agree with others, the tone of many postings on the dis is less than friendly, which is a real shame.

Again to the OP, I hope she feels better soon and that your next trip to WDW is a whole lot better. And I am warning my children about this feature on Splash, since they always seem to get in the front of the log. Good luck!

I don't know whats wrong with some of the people on here lately.

It just seems some have become so nasty and "all-knowing". :)

2nd this

and op thanks for the better discriptions about the wc...i couldn't figure that one out as to why a big group couldn't push around a 14 yr old. Ihave tried to use them before and your arm muscles build up if you use them all the time, not so much on a rare occasionsand crutches are the same imo

hope she's doing better

Sometimes I read something on this board and I have to remind myself...

The voice inside your head as you type is not necessarily the voice the "reader" will use in their head when they read your post.

Someone once told me perception is NOT reality.
