Me Nd dh will be going with our 20 month old dd. this time we want to go on some adult rides that she won't be able to go on. We have never used the child swap thing to go on as single riders. How do we do this? Is it best to make fp? Can the 3 of us just wait in line then swap who's holding the baby? We just don't want to leave each other for long periods of time.... Suggestions??

The baby cannot go in any queue with a height restriction, so no swapping at the ride vehicle. You can ask the CM at the entrance to the attraction for a rider swap pass. That pass will let a certain number of people use the FP+ line. With just two people, the first person to ride either goes standby while the other waits with the baby, or uses a FP+ already scheduled.

If you are single rider-ing, I'm not sure child swap applies.

You present at the line, ask for a child swap and then whomever is riding first gets in the standby line. The 20 month old cannot wait in the line. FP will shorten the separation time, but I would still request a child swap in the event your window ends while the rest of the party is in the Attraction.

It will just be me, dh, and dd who cant ride. So we will always be a single rider. Does this mean that we would get in the regular queue and ask for a child swap pass or would it be faster to go in the single rider lane and ask for the pass?

If there is a single rider line it is usually, but not always, faster than the regular queue. But there are only a few single rider lines (Everest, test track, rnr, I think that's it).
You all go to the first cm, ask for a child swap, one goes in the appropriate line (standby, fp, if you have one, single rider). The other person waits or does something else. Then later the second person goes on the ride through the fp line.

How ride swap without fastpass works is second rider gets ride swap pass (watching child out of line) while first rider waits in standby line. Then switch children and second rider rides fastpass line. This way both riders only have one standby wait time.

Yup. Only three Single Rider Lines in all of WDW:

Expedition Everest-AKL
Test Track-Epcot
Rock'n'RollerCoaster-DHS
