How the heck to cut through a giant squash?

I've tried a meat cleaver to no avail.

Would it be okay just to cook the squash as a whole?

I really don't want to end up turfing this squash as it was a gift.

Can you cut it halfway through the bottom then turn it over and cut it halfway through the top? That's how I attack watermelons. I don't know about cooking it whole. I guess you could, if you left it in there long enough.

I love fall/winter squash! I have never cooked one whole, but I have never had a GIANT one either! What I usually do is take a large butcher knife and stab a starting point, sometimes having to "hammer" it in with my fist, or pound it on the cutting board. Then I rock the knife back and forth to make a cut, then move it and keep on until I can cut it through. PLEASE BE CAREFUL IF YOU DO THIS!!!(I have to say that- the mother in me!)

If you do decide to cook it whole, I would put some holes in it like you do with a baked potato, in case it explodes?!!

Poke hole in it with a fork, place in microwave for 4 minutes, turn over 4 more minutes. This will soften it enough to cut open. Enjoy!

Plus if your feeling up to cooking, clean the seeds and bake for 1 to 2 hours on 200 degrees... (Soak in salt water for a few hours before hand - if you are not sensitive to it)

Tinker'n'fun,

This is a 13 pound squash! It won't fit in my microwave!

Pooh's Pal,

You are very funny! I could bring it into a judo studio.

OH, that is big!:lmao: I would still do the whole put in some water in the oven at a medium heat for around 30 minutes, then cup open, scoop the seeds, put a little butter and nutmeg on each side and put back in the over minus the water til soft...

On "As The World Turns", they always have a giant hubbard squash at the Snyder farm on Thanksgiving.. The Snyder men cut it with a saw - LOL..

Just a soap opera, but who knows? :rolleyes1 :rotfl:

Um ... an ax?

If you try that, block it with something so that it won't roll when you hit it, because at 13 lbs if it rebounded on you it wouldn't be fun.

I had to stop eating spaghetti squash as it was so hard to cut open each time and I preferred to keep all my limbs. :scared:

Really, if you don't insert a strong knife in properly, or your hand slips, it could be dangerous. So could the blade snapping in half while you pound it in. :scared1: There should be specialized squash cutting tools. :scratchin

I have seen my uncles cut a large squash with a hacksaw....... Usually at Thanksgiving...

I just had an idea. Maybe I could bring it round to the firehouse and a fireman could hit it with an axe for me!:rotfl:

ginsu knife. it will cut a nail, an aluminum can, shoe leather and still be razor sharp.

I wonder if this is how the guy who wrote the Halloween movie came up with his idea.

Yes, but you never see them cut a squash in the commercial. :scared:

You'll need something serrated...such as a quality bread knive. Or, as mentioned previously, a Ginsu would likely do the trick (it's also serrated).

Also.....are we certain the suspect veggie is fully ripened?

Yes, you can cook it whole. Just stab it a few times so it doesn't explode. I'ved baked butternut squash whole before, not a 13 pounder though.

Did you see 30 Rock last night? Jack trying to design a giant microwave with 4 doors and on wheels. Hehehehe.
