How old were you when you got your first job?

What did you do?

Did you work during the school year? How much?

What did your parents expect you to do with your money (buy own clothes, pay for gas, put money away for college, donate to the household expenses, etc)?

What did YOU choose to do with your money?

Did you maintain your grades?

Did you stay active in extra-curricular activities?

I was 17 when I got my first job. I worked at the Subway sandwiches near my highschool.

I had to pay my car insurance and gas money, which didn't leave much for spending money! At that time, minimum wage was somewhere around $3.??.

I did maintain my grades, while working almost every school night and weekends (I became the "closing manager.")

15 -- summer of 1987, I worked for my Dad doing odd jobs for his plumbing company in order to earn enough $$ to pay for my car insurance once I turned 16 so I could get my license. :)

The only sacrifice I had to make that summer was to stop playing baseball, because I just didn't have enough time for all the games and practices.

Wow, that's a lot of questions to answer :)

I was never expected to work during high school, my parents wanted me to focus on grades and sports. Now I'm a Junior in college and my parents don't want me working during the school year now either. They want me to focus on school. I work during the summer months at an Accounting Firm and all my $ either goes into my checking or savings account. As long as I don't waste my $ on useless things than I can do whatever I want with it. I don't have to buy clothes, gas, etc.. I was 18 when I got my 1st summer job. I think that's all the questions :)

How old were you when you got your first job?
-- "REAL job" was around 16.5 (I babysat before that alot, and worked for an insurance company just filing after work - all under the table though.)

What did you do?
--Worked for Taco bell (worked there on and off for nealy 6 years - went from being a taco slinger to a shift manager. started off around $5 an hour...when I left I was making over $8)

Did you work during the school year? How much?
--Yes. High school ended at 2:15, I worked 3pm to 8pm on school nights, on Fridays I worked until 11 or 12 (when I was old enough I worked until 2am) on the weekends I did day shifts

What did your parents expect you to do with your money (buy own clothes, pay for gas, put money away for college, donate to the household expenses, etc)?
--paid for the gas for the car they gave me (1988 camry wagon - loved it!), half the car insurance, money for "whatever" i wanted to do with my friends, some clothing, cosmetics, etc... I did also work there during the summer between college semester to save up "mad money" for when I was in school

What did YOU choose to do with your money?
--all the above...I thought it was a fair trade being that my parents gave me a car.

Did you maintain your grades?
--they actually went up as I became better at budgeting my time.

Did you stay active in extra-curricular activities?
--a few...but I wasn't involved in many to begin with (no sports)

I did choose, of my own admission, to 'skip' a bunch of stuff in high school...I worked rather then partied with my friends...think I turned out alright though.

I was 14 and worked on shade tobacco in Ct.

How old were you when you got your first job?
Babysitting, I think I was about 14 or so. An actual paycheck type job, I was 17.

What did you do?
Data entry

Did you work during the school year? How much?
Yes. During my senior year in high school, I had 3 part time jobs at one time, but not for very long.;) I had 1 job working in the elementary school office 3 hours a day (got high school credit for that job, as well as some money), I worked in a shoe place (that was the worst job ever!), and I worked in a fast food place for awhile. I only worked the 3 jobs for about 2 months, worked 2 of the jobs for 2 more months, then just had the 1 job for the rest of the school year.

What did your parents expect you to do with your money (buy own clothes, pay for gas, put money away for college, donate to the household expenses, etc)?
My mom didn't care what I did with the money.

What did YOU choose to do with your money?
It was mine to do as I pleased. It wasn't much, but I bought my senior school stuff (class ring, senior pics, senior mementos, etc), bought clothes, etc.

Did you maintain your grades?
Yep. I graded with a 4.0.

Did you stay active in extra-curricular activities?
Not while I worked. I was pretty upset when I found out I couldn't work and run track my senior year, but I wanted the money more than I wanted to run.

i got my first "real" job at 16 (i did stuff under the table, like babysitting, or worked in exchange for free goods/services, like horseback riding lessons/training, before that). i was a research assistant for one of my parents' books (employed by the publishing company, not my parents) and i designed their book's website. i only worked over the summer, not during the school year and i worked 40 hour weeks. i was able to do whatever i wanted with my money. i spent some of it on clothes and cd's and saved the rest for spending money for school.

once i was in college i only worked over the summer, not during the school year. my parents wanted me to focus on grades and extracurricular activities while i was in college. one summer i did study abroad instead of working, but as part of the study abroad program, i had an unpaid internship.

my sister, otoh, has never had a real job. she graduated from college this year and is working at a paid (stipend only) internship. because she needs a master's degree or work experience in her chosen field before she can get a "real" job, my parents are still supporting her financially (i.e. paying for rent and food, but not extras).

The day I turned 16 I had an 8 a.m. appt to get my drivers license and from there I stopped by McDonalds and got my very first job. Can't remember what I was paid. I worked the drive in window which I loved, all my teenage friends came by to see me:)

My dad didn't expect me to do anything with the money. So I blew it on teenage things:p

Yes I did maintain my grades. I was only at McDonalds a few months then got a job at IBM and Century 21 (both were part time)

When I graduated high school a year later I ended up putting myself through college, no help from parents.

I was 15. Worked as a cook and bus boy at a restaraunt. Was expected to save for college up to a point. Kept my grades up and didn't alter extra curricular activities at all (i.e. I did participate).

How old were you when you got your first job?
12

What did you do?
Jr. Counselor at a camp for handicapped children. I was responsible for two little girls (3 & 4) with Down's syndrome, one of whom was also deaf. It was my first paycheck job.

Did you work during the school year? How much?
Not until I was 13 and then only to babysit. Couldn't work on school nights, only on Friday and Saturday nights to babysit. We were allowed to work other jobs during the summer in addition to babysitting. We raked in the dough babysitting!

What did your parents expect you to do with your money (buy own clothes, pay for gas, put money away for college, donate to the household expenses, etc)?
They encouraged us to save it or use it to supplement our allowance initially. Once we were 15 we had to use it buy clothing that we wanted but they didn't buy (my parents gave us the essentials...anything above and beyond or anything with a brand name that cost $$$ was our responsibility), pay for entertainment (movies, sodas, stuff like that), and anything we wanted. For example, my mom bought one brand of shampoo for all of us. If we didn't want the shampoo we could buy our own with our own money.

A percentage needed to be put in savings so we could use it during the year to supplement our lifestyles :)

What did YOU choose to do with your money?
Bought Susan Bristol sweaters, Haloran slacks, bermuda bags, whale belts, etc. (I grew up in a preppy seaside community), went to the movies with my friends, basketball/hockey/football games at the high school, helped my friends pay for gas (I didn't get my license until I was 18 because I wouldn't have had a car to drive anyway so there was no point),went out to eat, saved for college.

Did you maintain your grades?
Had to to be on athletic teams and part of extracurriculars...didn't work during the school year as my parents wouldn't let us except for the Friday/Saturday night babysitting. They said it took too much away from

Did you stay active in extra-curricular activities?
Yup...didn't work so I had time to be on the field hockey team, debate club, yearbook, school paper, student council, indoor and outdoor track, pep squad and chorale.

How old were you when you got your first job?
Fifteen and lied and said I was sixteen. You didn't have to show your SS card then, but you did have to have working papers if you were under 16. No one ever asked me to prove my age. Different times now, huh? :)

What did you do?
Waitressed at a little department store that used to around here called Grants.

Did you work during the school year? How much?
Yes. All year round. But I worked mostly during the week, not weekends.

What did your parents expect you to do with your money (buy own clothes, pay for gas, put money away for college, donate to the household expenses, etc)?
They expected me to buy my own non-essentials like makeup, movie tickets, cigarettes  LOL!, gasoline etc. No I did not have to save any money, but my parents never understood the concept of saving money sooooo ... I didn't have to donate to the household until I was out of high school, working full time, living at home for a little bit looking for an apartment of my own.

What did YOU choose to do with your money?
Bought at least one album a week, makeup, pitched in the kegs  went out to eat with our gang at the local pizza place on the weekends, went down the shore for the weekends

Did you maintain your grades?
Yes.

Did you stay active in extra-curricular activities?
Hmmm. I was in high school in the 70's, everything was alternative then, so if you had a study hall period you could fill it up with something. I chose the radio station, so I don't know if that counts or not? We had meetings after school, LOL! That's about it. I wasn't in sports or academic clubs. :)

How old were you when you got your first job? Save babysitting which I did at about 12/13, my first job was Mc Donald's

What did you do? Everything that a lowly worker could do... cashier, food prep, cleaning... all the fun stuff

Did you work during the school year? How much? Weekends only. About 8-16 hours. My parents did not allow me to work weeknights on a regular basis

What did your parents expect you to do with your money (buy own clothes, pay for gas, put money away for college, donate to the household expenses, etc)? Save, start paying for some of my personal expenses. They didn't really say

What did YOU choose to do with your money? Saved some, had fun with some, and started buying personal items (clothes and the like)

Did you maintain your grades? Yep

Did you stay active in extra-curricular activities? Yep

I was 16 when I got my first job.

I was a cashier for a major grocery chain.

I worked during the school year, usually around 20-25 hours a week. During the summer, I worked close to 35 hours.

Once I had my job, I purchased things I wanted, but not necessarily needed. If I wanted something that my parents normally wouldn't purchase, then it was up to me to save my money to buy it. I did have to use my money to buy a car and for the gas to drive it.

I chose to buy a car - and clothes, those were my two main things.

My grades stayed high, and never had a problem, but I also was never an A student. I was more of the B- range most of my life.

I was not someone who was into sports or anything - I was very active in our Drama Club and Jazz Choir, which required extra rehearsals, and I had no problem doing those as well.

Yes, a couple of hours after school and on Saturdays

What did your parents expect you to do with your money (buy own clothes, pay for gas, put money away for college, donate to the household expenses, etc)?

My parents didn't expect anything, they didn't even expect me to work. I wanted my own spending money and I didn't want to have to ask my parents everytime I wanted money.

What did YOU choose to do with your money?

Spent it, lol. I bought clothes, albums, etc.

Did you maintain your grades?

Yes

Did you stay active in extra-curricular activities?

I was never involved in any after school stuff, it wasn't for me.

1. I was 17
2. Worked at Hardees 1989-1990
3. Yes about 20 hours a week
4. Made 3.10 an hour...the most I could do was look at my money...lol..kidding aside. it was gas money, spending money to go out with friends. Gas was .90 a gallon.
5. Pretty much all they required was that I paid for gas. I guess if I asked for gas money they would have given it though. I didnt ask for money much,
6. My grades maintained, my softball suffered, they kept scheduling me during practice and games. I finally quit to get a steadier schedule at a different job.

I was 16 when i got my first job at a pizza place called Breaduaux pisa. I think i made like $5.25 and worked 1 or 2 nights per week and i weekend day or night. My $$ i earned was for me to spend anyway i wanted as my parents were great and supplied everything for me! My dad was spitting nails when he found out i got a job--he wanted to fully support me until i was out of school as he did my older siblings. Although looking back i wish i would have let him spoil me because now i have to work and i don't want to!!:teeth: Oh well--can't have your cake and eat it too!!
