How much Magic can I get and then share?

I posted this in another thread and brought it over to get more input:

I have been very thorough in my search for information on the DVC. Already have the video.

I am looking for the intangible perks. Not the ones in the brochure or video. I am sure there are ways to use the membership to ones advantage (but not at anybody elses expense).

Looking at the numbers, flexibility, service and accomadations. I love DVC.

What does a member get that Disney can't put in a selling script or package? What does a member not get?

I have many ideas that include bringing family and friends, but these are not my reality as it is some of yours.

members at present do not get a good discount on tickets - we get a 10% discount on their LOS (UPH) - but I don't like those tickets.

Hopping to get a good annual pass discount.

If you already love DVC - you will love it even more when you stay there.

the resorts are lovely, each has a different flavor - OKW - relaxing like the keys, BWV - exciting like the Atlantic BW, BCV - very beach lover type atmosphere plus you get SALB, VWL - you will think you are in a forest in the mountains.

Disney does a great job of themeing.

the restuarants are all pretty nice.

going to WDW and KNOWING you will be back - you don't have to rush around to see everything - you will be back!!!

I really enjoy taking friends and family and spending time with them in a way that I would never had done if I hadn't bought DVC.

My father could never understand why I would 'waste' my money on something like a timeshare. Recently, after I was married, I took my father (just the two of us) to BWV for 3 days and then OKW for 2. It took a lot of arm twisting to get him to go (like 3 years of it). Well the two of us went and my father finally understood. On the third day as we were leaving BWV, he started to cry. He was really overcome with the emotion of being at a place so nice and spending some quality time with his son. Well, needless to say, we are going back in October. Everytime I talk to him on the phone, he has something to say about going. He keeps telling me how he is saving money for this and saving money for that. And, he keeps asking me to extend our trip. He just can't wait. But the best thing about all of this is that I get to spend time with my dad and create a stronger bond with him.

The same has been true with other family members I have taken. For me the Disney Magic isn't so much in the parks or attractions, or even the beautiful accomodations of the DVC resorts. It is the feelings and bonds I get and create with friends and family.

Here's one that is at someone elses expense (at least monetarily). DVC is one of the most rentable timeshares going. If for some reason you can't use a year or two and are so inclined, you can rent your points pretty easily.

I whole heartedly agree with DavidRoss and here is our story: Last summer our SIL and DD came home from vacation and said: We bought a "timeshare", well I for one was very suspicious! But then they asked us to go with them this summer to see the "world". I will never forget opening the door of our studio at OKW and seeing a 2 year old dressed in a Minnie Mouse dress, and her sister was Cinderella and ready for Chef Mickey's. OH yeah buy the way. That sold us, We bought too! Now we are "hooked"

DavidRoss and Sbacer those are the memories and special things I want for my family. I have a wonderful wife and 5 DKids that had a blast on our 7 night/8 day trip to the Allstar Sports. I could have almost put down 50% toward ownership and financed the rest.

My mission in life is to enjoy my family first and foremost. I am taking steps in my life to insure that I am in their lives and DVC is one avenue that I see helping us achieve that family bond.

Let me tell about you my DVC experience. It is one of the best things I have ever done for my family. We bought cheap (via resale) in '97 and then had to sell due to downsizing. As things turned around a bit, economically, we discussed buying back in. This we did buying a slightly smaller point package. I have never regretted the original or subsequent purchase. The only thing I regret is selling the original purchase to begin with.

DVC currently does not (and possibly never will) give great perks to members. Some dining discounts. A small ticket discount on UPHs. Occationally member events (most of which you will pay for) - a member cruise, a member reception.

It is what you see is what you get....but you might not "see" clearly...

Access to multiroom units for a reasonable cost - meaning the kids sleep in a different room.

A "enforced" vacation schedule for those of us who'd procrastinate going somewhere.

The ability to take friends and relatives (although that turns into "we need more points" fast).

I'm very glad you are spending this time with your father. I wish mine was still around to go with us. He would have loved going to Epcot but by the time we started going regularly with DS he was gone.

I think the intangable is that you truely own a piece of the magic. you show up with family and friends and they say "welcome home".

There are 3 important things about property:

I believe WDW is the best location in the world. I would rather own in WDW than NY, Paris, Los Vegas, Mexico.... If you are going to buy a timeshare pick the one with the best location and for me its WDW.

These are some of my favorite "intangible" DVC perks:

I like the fact that I do not have to be obsessive about calling CRO to make sure I get the absolute best deal/discount on a room! DVC has taken all that "stress" away!

I like that the 1 bedroom units have two TVs so I don't have to put up with the resident "can't possibly watch the same channel for more than 32 seconds in a row" .

I like that I don't have to go to bed or get up at exactly the same time as my DH - there's really not much you can do by yourself with all the lights out and the TV in the "off" position, LOL.

I like that I don't have to pack "everything including the kitchen sink". It's already there - along with a washer & dryer.

I really like being able to invite family along and treat them to a stay in really nice accomodations.

For me the best gift of magic was to my dad's wife. She had never been to Disney World much less the state of FL as she grew up in a rural and very poor community. As a child she would watch the Wonderful World of Disney at someone's house in black and white and see the fireworks go off above the castle. I brought her and my dad with me in May 1999 for her first trip. Seeing her cry as we watched the fireworks over the castle was a moment I will never forget. She thanked me for letting her see something she could only dream of as a child. I brought them again with me on a trip in December 2002 for what may be her last trip due to health complications. She is determined that if she does go blind to be able to go again and "hear" the magic she knows is there already. I would like to make that magic happen for her once again. . .
