How much farther would you take this? Update pg. 2

We had the same thing happen to us. we live in a rural area and it was during a heat spell....90's for over 2 weeks...my husband was outside one night and this dog wandered up to him and when he said something to it, it collapsed at his feet....you could tell he was thin and tired.

Well, we brought him some food and water and he was sooo affectionate..it was unbelieveable. We have a dog of our own who is an only pet and is completely spoiled, but this dog was so grateful.....we brought him in the airconditioned house for the night and kept him penned in the laundry room...in the morning we put him back outside and left him out all day hoping that he would go home...he stayed.....we pulled 42 woodticks off of him and he let hubby do it with no problem...we advertised, on the radio, paper, vet office, shelter, police dept....he was ours--he was too sweet to bring to the shelter. my mom said she would take him and he has been the best pet ever! I think when you rescue a dog like this, they rememer a lot and turn out to be great pets...usually.

We also had an experience about 8 years ago where my mom, who lives in the city, had a dog show up on her back porch the day after a tornado hit close by. She did the same thing...radio, paper, vet, etc........the dog was too sweet to bring to the shelter so she brought the dog to us to give to my best friends family....where the doggie lives the life of luxury.

Funny, in a 6 year period, we swapped a city dog for a country dog!

Pete's Mom -- Yes, according to the expired city tag, the dog was neutered. However, we're going to double-check that since my BIL tells me that the collar this dog is wearing is too small for him, so either the dog has been wandering long enough to outgrow his collar, or whoever had him previously put the wrong collar on him, maybe even the collar from another dog?

I've also been checking the lost and found ads in the Chicago papers and haven't seen anything. The rabies tag was a dead end, apparently the rabies shot was administered by Animal Control, not a specific vet, which is why we think this dog was in a pound until recently. Unfortunately, Chicago is a really big city and there are lots of strays, so Animal Control hasn't been very helpful.

At this point I'm inclined to just check for a micro-chip and if the dog hasn't been chipped, he's ours.

Well, it has been three weeks since my BIL found the dog and it looks like he's ours. It turned out that my BIL had him for a whole week before he even mentioned the dog to us, and he'd spent that week trying to find the owners too. The vet said he had no micro-chip and there have been no lost & found ads looking for a dog his size.

It's a shame, but we think he may have been dumped, because he doesn't seem like the type to roam very far. My DH had Sparky tied up outside (we're in the process of getting a fence) and he chewed through the leash in order to get up to the back door. He also snuck out the front door but came back immediately when we called. We're getting him micro-chipped on Monday when we take him back to the vet for a full check-up.

He's also passed all the temperament tests we could think of. He lets me take a rawhide chew away from him, and I can play with all four paws and his tail. He is very good on a leash, even my petite 5yo DD can walk him and he doesn't pull away (not even when he sees a deer, a rabbit or another dog). He also loves to share his toys, as long as we throw them for him to chase! The cats are reserving judgement for now, but he only barks at them when they hiss at him first, and they've actually chased him out of the family room a couple of times since he's such a big baby.
