We had the same thing happen to us. we live in a rural area and it was during a heat spell....90's for over 2 weeks...my husband was outside one night and this dog wandered up to him and when he said something to it, it collapsed at his feet....you could tell he was thin and tired.
Well, we brought him some food and water and he was sooo affectionate..it was unbelieveable. We have a dog of our own who is an only pet and is completely spoiled, but this dog was so grateful.....we brought him in the airconditioned house for the night and kept him penned in the laundry room...in the morning we put him back outside and left him out all day hoping that he would go home...he stayed.....we pulled 42 woodticks off of him and he let hubby do it with no problem...we advertised, on the radio, paper, vet office, shelter, police dept....he was ours--he was too sweet to bring to the shelter. my mom said she would take him and he has been the best pet ever! I think when you rescue a dog like this, they rememer a lot and turn out to be great pets...usually.
We also had an experience about 8 years ago where my mom, who lives in the city, had a dog show up on her back porch the day after a tornado hit close by. She did the same thing...radio, paper, vet, etc........the dog was too sweet to bring to the shelter so she brought the dog to us to give to my best friends family....where the doggie lives the life of luxury.
Funny, in a 6 year period, we swapped a city dog for a country dog!
