Ok I know that is a loaded question, because each circumstance is different. But I figured if I can get a ballpark then at least I would have some idea, because I have absolutely NO CLUE as of right now! lol

We have a 1200-ish square foot, 3-level condo. Typical furniture....couch, tables, beds, dressers, tv's.

Maybe someone who has had even somewhat of a close experience can post what they were charged. Even if your home wasn't similar, what did you pay a moving company? Was it by the hour, house, furniture, etc?

Any and all moving company info is appreciated! :cutie: TIA!

We filled an entire moving truck to the brim and moved about 300 miles. I am remembering it was Alliance that moved us, and we were neighbors with the guy taking care of things. I don't think he gave us a better deal, since DH's new job was paying. I packed all rooms except furniture and they had three ladies pack the entire kitchen-wrapping and boxing. It came to a little over $5K.

I would definitely be packing EVERYTHING. We may only need help with moving the furniture out of our house and into the new house, in the same town. So pretty much just lifting the heavy stuff....we would handle EVERYTHING else.

I would suggest heading over to www.move.com they have calculators there to help you figure it out.

We just moved and the company paid for ours but I was curious so I asked and was  :faint: To pack us, move us 900 miles, unload us and unpack a few boxes would have been over $10,000  Now keep in mind we had a 3300 sq ft 6 bed/3 bath house and, well frankly, we have a LOT of crap that I am now getting rid of. I was totally embarrassed as they were loading it all. We had a TON of storage at our last house, we had a huge shed plus an insulated 12X10 store room so we just kind of forgot about it. Ok that is my guilty little secret. It was all organized but it was still there. :rolleyes1:guilty:

Ok I didnt see that before I posted. We did that once in town and it cost I think $300 or $400 for the day. That was them moving the stuff, driving the truck, and dropping it in the new house. Not nearly as scary

Our last move was over $7,500.

Make sure that you understand your "estimate". Get a real quote, with limits on overages. I had a friend that got an estimate. The estimator was off by over 100% (meaning the actual time was double, so the cost was double the estimate). Because of the terms of the contract, he had to pay the full amount.

This is really depends on the pricing for your area. We have had it be anywhere between $50/hour and $135/hour with a 2-3 hour min. We have done this in Indiana, Illinios and three places in South Florida. The worst was when we used one company to move us across town ... It ended up costing almost $1K because they had to WRAP everything, load it into their own truck, drive across town and then unload it. I think it's cheaper if you rent your own truck because their liability is less if they aren't driving the truck.

MUCH better!!! hehehehe

Thanks for all the info, everyone! I am def going to check out move.com, I didn't even know it existed. Keep the info coming! :D

We moved from a 1200ish sf (3 bedroom/2 1/2 bath) condo four years ago. Basically we had three full bedrooms, 2 full living room sets, dining room and kitchen sets, a wall of boxes, and a totally stuffed garage. We filled one truck to the brim (not the really big tracker-trailer size) but the size just below it. The second truck was full but not as packed. The movers loaded the trucks on a Thursday and stored the trucks overnight. We moved 4 miles away (same Township) and they unloaded both trucks in about 3 hours. Total costs with tip was $2,300. I think they charged us a few hundred for storage (like $300.)

Hope that helps. Good luck with the move!

We moved from Boston to Southern California in July 2008. My DH's company paid for the move. Included two cars. I believe the cars were $5,000.00. On a carrier that was not enclosed...that is more. The actual move was set up with DH's human resources co. so I never saw an amount.

Now we are moving again to San Diego from Orange County. A job offer DH could not refuse. New company said to get 3 quotes. I am working on that right now.

1000 sq ft apt, all on one floor, on the top (3rd) floor w/no elevators to 1700 sq ft townhouse, 3 floors.

#1) $1700.00
#2) $1800.00

These quotes include all packing and disassemble furniture and reassemble at new location.

We rented a U haul, and a car trailor for 500 miles.. It was around $800.

It worked out OK... Only problem was broken down couch from piles of stuff on top. It was usable but never comfortable.

I wouldn't do it again though...been there...done that. I would hire a mover to go down the street-LOL

I had great luck with emove.com; I hired labor on an hourly basis. The best part was it was off-duty firefighters. They came to my house, we rented a truck from Penske, and I paid about $25/hour x 3 hours x 2 guys. The loaded my 5 bedroom house in 2 hours 45 minutes. We then drove the truck to the our new home (in another state) and hired from emove.com on this end for the same rate to unload. There may be some added charges for the stairs, but it was the most reasonable thing I could find. There are reviews on that site so you can see what experience others have had, I found the feedback was very, very accurate. We relocated over 1200 miles and our total cost was under $1000.

depends on if it's "local", "distant", or "long distance".

we did a local move (within the same town) and within 9 months moved with the same items "long distance" (from california to washington). with the local move all the companies looked at the sq. footage of the house and it's contents, estimated the time to pack the truck (we would pre-pack all items that needed to be in boxes), travel, and unloading-based it on an hourly fee.

with the "long distance" (same packing criteria)-it was based on weight, distance and destination (also kinda a factor was the timing of the move-if a company had regional moves schedualed we got a better 'break' b/c they would be traveling to the general vacinity of where we were moving).

we used allied-one thing that was a benefit to us was their policy that if you had any ties to military (active, retired, dependant) or government (active, retired, dependant) they would offer you the contracted rate those agencies had if it was lower than your estimate. they were also willing to lock in the mileage factor (driven by fuel costs, if fuel costs went down after contracting, the price went down but if they went up you were locked into the rate at the time of contract:thumbsup2).

one thing i'll suggest-call your renter's or homeowner's insurance company and find out your coverage for transported items. then you can look to what the moving company charges and decide if (1) you need additional insurance on your possessions, (2) if it's a good deal to get it through the movers, or (3) if it's a better deal to up or get a special rider through your insurance company (with us it was a better deal to get a cheap policy through the movers that would cover our deductable through our homeowners).

we used movers for the bulk of our stuff-that said...we had to transport vehicals so we rented a small u-haul trailer that we towed behind one. in that trailer we put our person items, antiques and documents that no amount of money could replace. we also put in the items we knew we needed to survive for the 3-5 day range that every moving company said they would give for actual delivery at destination (they give a deliver range of days but call the day before to let you know that delivery will occur the next day-we also packed one small t.v.-that way we could set up our direct t.v. installation for a day immediatly after we arrived such that when the rest of the t.v.'s showed up we could hook them up and confirm no damage had occured).

We just did a local move, for furniture. We lived in an apartment, moving to a house. We moved the boxes ourselves in the car. We hired Student Movers to move the sofa, mattresses, 2 large, heavy display cases, dresser, desk w/ hutch.

They charged from the time they left their depot, to the time they returned. 30 min each way. It was 30 minute drive between house and apartment. We were charged for 2.5 hours, so 1.5 hours of that was travel time. They charged in 15 min increments. It was $104/hr, plus a fuel charge. $275 total. This is in Denver.

DH had called several places, and they all came out around the same. They had different minimums, some wouldn't charge the time to/from depot, but their minimum time was higher, or they would bill in half hour increments, etc. But we had friends that had actually used Student Movers, so that's why we chose them.

Anyone considering a long distance move, I highly recommend ABF freight. Http://www.upack.com . You pack, they drive. They charge by linear foot, not weight, so it is cheaper. Even if you higher people to load/unload it for you.

We just moved 750 miles away. We had a 4500 square foot house. They packed everything. They did not unpack the boxes, just placed them in the room we wanted them in. It was a corporate move so we didn't pay it but I saw the bill and it was close to $22,000.

we've moved 3 times, all paid for by companies. First time was probably close to $5,000. 2000SF house, they packed & unpacked, moved 250 miles away. 2nd time was probably $7000 (another child's toys added in now) moved 100 miles away, they packed, did not unpack. 3rd time back 100 miles cost close to $3000. We did all packing and unpacking, the stored overnight. Two men and a truck is who we used. They were pretty cool. Unloaded in the rooms. It's all based on weight of items and distance.

ETA: based on weight of items, distance moved and packing/unpacking/materials.

I would expect to pay about $150/hour for 3 guys and a truck for a local move. Long distance moves are priced differently. My long distance move 3 months ago was similar to emdav's, except I had to pay.

Wow that deserves a double :scared1::scared1: !!!! :rotfl:

Thanks to ALL of you for your suggestions and experiences. :thumbsup2 I am looking at all of the info you left for me. We do have friends that can help us move, but we are in our late 30's and am I totally crazy for thinking my DH and his friends can have heart attacks this early?? lol Let's face it they are not getting any younger. So I figured even if I only hire someone for the real heavy stuff, DH and our friends can certainly take care of the other things.

Not totally crazy thinking about his friends and worrying. Anything can happen. We have a friend who had a heart attack in her 30's. She is a little overweight but not heavy-heavy. I mean like 20lbs overweight. Genetics and lifestyle are big factors in that.

If you can get boxes and pack most yourself, that will save quite a bit. Best thing they can give you are garment boxes. They cost like $10-12 each but they are awesome. They are about the size of a fridge box but a bit shorter and they have a metal pole that goes across. You can hang your clothes in it and transport that way. Or you did say cross town, you could buy a garment pole for the backseat of your car and do that the same. I love the garment boxes though, great for afterwards and storing out of season jackets.

Also keep in mind if you buy boxes from them and they offer to dispose of some of them for you. We were told that they were resold for in-town moves.

Just be sure you do good research on the company, and get everything in writing up front with limits on final cost. There are more than a few out there that will give you a quote for $x, pack everything into their trucks, start to drive and then call you and say the estimate is now $X times 2 and if you want your stuff back you'll pay it or else. There is a special place in hell for those types of businesses.

Last time my parents moved the moving company left everything in the upstairs master bedroom - didn't take any of it! So we had to do it all ourselves later because the company refused to go back and do it right.

I'm not fond of moving companies, as you may have guessed. :)
