How does vandalism and looting accomplish anything???

I've seen 13 and 15 year olds his same size. Are they grown too? Sure, he was a large kid. But his size is not a determination of his status. He was a kid. Just like my daughter is still a kid, albeit a much smaller one.

Thanks for being the spokesperson for everyone calling him a man but I doubt everyone means the same thing. I say this because even when "incidents" have happened when the kid wasn't as big as Michael Brown, there are people who want to classify them as men.

If your daughter were to commit a crime and be tried, she would be tried as an adult. Your feelings about your baby girl wouldn't change her legal status.

An 18 year old male is a man, period. He is responsible for own actions, absent a physical or mental disability, he is capable of moving out and supporting himself and he has all of the rights and responsibilities that come with being a man.

For me, it has nothing to do with size, it's age. While I'll always refer to "my kids", once they turned 18, I no longer considered them kids - they were and are adults, with all of the rights and responsibilities that come with that.

At 18, the state of Missouri and the federal government both classify him as a "man". Additionally, he was much larger than the average "man". People his age are serving our country in combat. I really don't see why this is so difficult to accept. Brown may have been a YOUNG man, but both legally and physically, he was indeed a "man". End of story.

Keep pointing out their hypocrisy by complaining about race being brought up and bringing up race yourself. :thumbsup2

Why am I confused? Eliza61 had page after page of "race" posts. Nothing was said to her in regards to her opinions. :confused3. Personally I am for freedom of speech no matter what your opinion is.

Did she also say she was sick of the focus being on race? That's the real reason for my comment. Ourbigtrip agreed with another post about how the racial focus is wrong and then brought up some racial statistics in the next paragraph.

I don't care of people want to go on and on about race. It really doesn't matter to me. I just think it's silly to complain that you don't like that being the focus and continually focus on it yourself.

Doesn't matter to me if it's relevant or not. It just seems counterproductive to say you don't think this is about racism and you wish that wasn't the focus and then keep bringing up Al Sharpton or racial issues and statistics.
I'm not saying don't discuss race. I'm saying don't say you don't like the racial focus all this has and bring up race all in the same post.

The point is that Al Sharpton and Jessie Jackson only show up for those incidents they claim are racial. They like to say it is a trend and a sign of whatever message they are trying to promote. All the while they neglect where violence is a mega huge problem literally. Some have said that All Hsapron revise Al often is talking about black on back crimes. Yet someone just posted that these deaths happen regularly in Chicago and he is nowhere to be found saying a word. We are supposed to find him talking about these things on some obscure radio program. He has his own show on MSnBC. Why aren't we hearing it about there? It's because we are to believe that Hispanic men posing as white men and white cops are out killing a Trayvon or a Michael every day. It's an "epidemic".

But the facts do not support that. Trayvon died 2 years ago. A mega news story every two years does not an epidemic make.

I believe I clearly stated that he is legally an adult. Not sure if you missed that in my original post. Being a lawyer, I clearly understand the legal distinction. However, thanks for the attempt to enlighten me. :thumbsup2

Despite that, in the eyes of most people/parents our 18 year olds are still kids growing into adulthood. It is only when dealing with these type of "incidents" that some people begin to hardline classify all 18 year olds as fully grown adults.

Actually the point is that if you keep bringing up Al Sharpton and stuff like that then you are continuing to keep the focus racial.

Maybe in your world, but not in mine. If I had a pet peeve, it would probably be parents that infantilize their adult children.

Clearly we live in different worlds. Not sure who wants to infantilize their adult children. I certainly didn't say that. I actually said even children that commit crime must be held responsible. So, I am a firm believer in taking responsibility and accepting the consequences of one's action regardless of age.

My primary point was one of semantics. Perhaps highlighted by the fact that in my day to day life, we consider our 18 year olds to still be kids growing into adulthood but that does not transfer over when dealing with these incidents in the news.

Maybe we should start a pet peeve thread!! lol

Well--As a lawyer then You should be well aware of the reason for the hard line. Yes, when crime happens, there is an age line. Even if the cop did not shoot him, the option of discussing it with his mother just isn't on the table.

And is family called him a "child". He no longer was one. He could have legally purchased his swisher sweets instead of stealing them.

While my kids will always be my kids, it would be naive to think that they absolve themselves of the responsibilities that come with being a person who has reached the age of 18.

Personally when Eliza61 said nothing has changed since the year 1611 was very offensive to me and I'm sure others. Really? Not one thing has changed? At that point i could not take her seriously.

Anyway, I think what he met is that the media portrays the cops as the enemy and the perpetrator (in this case) as a kid walking to grandmothers to drink milk and eat cookies. The media always distorts information. Then you have Al spewing hate. This is where racial focus is distorted. It's the same ole song and dance. Until in this matter when the truth comes out.

He inserts himself into a current event. He gets mentioned. It is not rocket science.

So do we not mention someone who is black at an event or that makes it racial?i

Eliza61 is black therefore has a different set of rules in this country. I'm a white guy so I'm sure it's somehow my fault.

Resistance is futile! I'm not sure how many times I can say kid or adult has nothing, zero, nada to do with his level of responsibility. I was not attempting to absolve him of anything he did.

I was not making a legal distinction. I was attempting to make a parental one.

I don't care if you mention race. Perhaps you are confused. My comments about not bringing up race were advice to bigtrip on how to get this discussion away from race (which is what he said he wanted). I really don't feel like going back and forth with you about it anymore, especially considering you seem to be twisting it.

Oh you're a lawyer well that explains everything then. :worship:

Does it really explain everything? Do all lawyers think their 18 years olds are still kids growing into adulthood? Or do all lawyers think people, despite their age, must take responsibility for their actions? Not sure which part is defining me.
