Something about cold air helps take smoke smell out of fabric. A trick my SIL taught me, which she learned after she stared waitressing at a bar and grill. Hang a coat (or backpack) outside in the cold for a few hours and the smell goes away. I would also try washing it.

vodka is good for getting out smoke smells according to mythbusters. You can also try to wipe all you can down with a vinegar and water solution with a few drops of dishwashing liquid.
