not sure if this was the right place.

but do any of you know how to cut frozen ground beef?
someone gave us a chub of 10 lbs frozen beef.
how the heck can I get it into smaller usable pieces?

Chain saw? Really, I'm not sure there is a safe way to cut frozen ground beef. I always make sure that when I buy it in bulk, I make individual hamburger patties before freezing it. Ten pounds in one block :scared1: !

Honestly, I can't think of any safe way to do that. That is a huge chunk of beef!

I would thaw it out safely, cook it all up, put it in plastic freezer bags by the pound for using later and refreeze it until you need it.

Yes, the question how to do it safely? I cannot think of anyway either.

I would also thaw, cook it, and then refreeze.

I would do this as well.

What about an electric bread knife?

An electric bread knife would never cut through frozen hamburger safely.

A meat saw! The kind that butchers use, it the only thing I can think of if you want to keep it frozen and not have to thaw it all out.

Maybe you could take it to a local butcher in a cooler and for a small fee they might be willing to cut it up into smaller pieces for you.

Not sure how to cut it but I would defrost it and then use what I needed and fry up the rest and freeze in portions. It can then be used for lots of different recipes.

According to the USDA website it is safe to refreeze meats. You may lose a little quality but it's safe to do. I refreeze meat and I've never had an issue.

I would refreeze also. You can let it thaw some and then cut it into the sizes you want. I guess I am weird, but I have never like the taste of ground beef after it has been cooked and then frozen for later use. I did it once and I just didn't care for the taste.

I agree with that, but 10 lbs of Ground Beef is a lot and the amount of time to thaw that much safely, would be pretty tricky. That's why I would go for cutting it with a saw, like the one above.

Yeah, but who has the money to put out for that kind of saw? I imagine it'd be more expensive than the beef.

I usually thaw my beef in the fridge. I buy mine in bulk and divide it b4 freezing, but in about 1lb increments it usually takes about 2 days or so. So for 10lbs it may be about a week or more I'm guessing. It may be dividable as it thaws considering it'll got from outside in.

Anybody know if its safe to thaw it out in cool water like you can for poultry:confused3

People thaw 24 pound turkeys in the refrigerator all the time. :)

Yes, you can put it under a slow (very slow) running tap and allow it to thaw that way. It will wash the color out quite a bit though.

Me? I'd do something totally stupid like whack a chisel with a hammer in the middle of the thing and see if I could crack it.

Hey. I said it was stupid. :rotfl:

If it can cut through wood, I'd think it could cut through some frozen meat. Just wash it down with some bleach water before and after (the saw, not the meat :))

Yes, take it to the butcher. We took a 38lb. frozen turkey to our butcher. They sawed it in half so quickly and easily! It was amazing!:thumbsup2

ok OP here.

we uh, decided to toss it out.
I was informed that the person my daughter got it from (she had to move & did not have room in freezer) was given it from someone who worked for Lion country safari,,,,,,,, um,, guess these chubs were used to feed the beasts there.
now.. it may have been fine & dandy meat, but staring at the sealed wrapped tube.. we couldn't help but wonder,, uh, is that cow beef in there? or *ick* somethign else.........
