How do I get an upgrade to Economy Plus using miles?

This may sound like a silly question (and it's not specifically WDW-related), but I figured one of you very experienced travellers would know.

My wife and I will be taking a long flight on United soon. I was wondering how to get an upgrade to at least Economy Plus (for the legroom) using miles. Is this something I request in advance? At the counter? Can I use the Easy-Check-In to request it? How many miles does it cost?

Any answers to these questions would be appreciated.

I don't beleive you will need to cash in any miles to get Economy Plus seating. I have flown United many times and 9 out of 10 times, I have been able to score Economy Plus seats. I'm not a frequent flyer as much as I was in the past and never made it to any higher level in their program. I just ask when I check in and they have been able to accomodate me.

I would suggest getting there early though as I beleive it is first come first serve for those seats.
