How bad weather wise is September?

Just wondering, I know Aug/Sept are main Hurricane months, what month is a better chance to see a storm like Fay? I've seen some video's on YouTube and the crowds were like no where. I think walking around in rain all day at WDW might be fun:goodvibes

What are your experiences during these tropical storms? Is it fairly safe in the Orlando area during these types of storms? Just wondering?

Thanks No. I'm not insane

Was there from 1-8 Sep 09.
On one day, a rain storm came through DHS at about 4:30pm - cleared up by the time we were done eating at Sci-FI and
On one evening it rained while we were at the Biergarten for supper - it was sunny when we went in, sunny when we came out but the pavement was wet and there were a few puddles.....
Might have rained overnight at some point - I could never tell if the grass was wet because of sprinkler systems or rain....
I was very surprised by the weather as we got less rain than we did in an October trip another year.

Well we went in 2004 the crazy hurricane year and was fine. IT was a little crazy but we are still going in September again this year. SO I guess it wasn't that bad.

My uncle lived in Stewart Fl 2004. 2 hurricanes in 3 weeks:scared1::eek:

Never been in September but one trip we went in February and it rained after we got there (all day). LOVED IT!! No lines on anything, the silly ponchos came in handy and it was actually kind of romantic. :) We had tons of fun.

And once you're all wet anyway, you might as well go on Splash Mountain 4 or 5 times right, because there are no lines!

We went during hurricane season once. We won't be doing that again. We were pre-dvc and when they shut down all the parks and restaurants and sent most of the CMs home it was looking dicey there for a bit. They did eventually put together a buffet.

The view of bay lake was intense.

I have visited during the months of Jan, Mar, July, Aug, and Dec. Every trip has always had at least one day of fairly heavy rain. I'm guessing that Sept is no exception. ;)

Man, I would love to see photo's or video or these trips. I have found a few, but now everyone uses YouTube.

We were there in the days after WDW closed for a hurricane for the first time ever. Lots of people staying in the hotels were Florida residents who were there to escape what was at home. The day we left most of Florida had closed schools in expectation of a hurricane that didn't come. We've been in September without hurricanes around. September in general doesn't have the crowds of other months. I know they have free dining, so it's not deserted, but it's not crazy, and we've been happy.

I'm sort of planning a GalFriends week next September, but I don't really want to give up going for F&W. In October I would only have a long weekend, 5 days at most and I miss a day of school. This year, I'm at the end of September, so I am missing a day of school and only 5 days at WDW, but I'm doing some F&W things that look interesting. If it's as good as I think, then next year, I suppose I'll do the same and skip the September trip with friends.

We have been in mid to late September twice. The first time was after Katrina. We carried throw-away ponchos all the time because rain was unpredictable. The parks seemed deserted to me but we are DL people so WDW never seems very crowded. Be prepared for a lot of heat and humidity!!

We have been going every September since 1999 and have really not had a problem with Hurricanes or Tropical Storms. We usually leave the Thursday before Labor Day and return the following Friday. I remember going the year Charlie hit -- we drove at that time so we stayed a couple of days in SC. No problem at Disney infact, like Bobbi posted, a lot of FL residents were there escaping the storm. Just be aware that it tends to be very HOT in September but with the low crowds, it is sooooo much fun!!

We've been going in mid-September for years and really haven't had any issues with rain. I always check the weather before we go and it has rain everyday, then we get there...no rain. Last year it only rained on our last night there, after we were already in for the night. Year before - zippo for rain! Maybe we've been lucky? Maybe I've just jinxed myself?

I completely prefer that time frame for a few reasons... less crowds, it's a nice trip after "summer vacations" and its decorated for Halloween. I have to say though, I'm not afraid of the rains and since they don't usually last for very long, I could deal. Of course, the humidity is not so hair friendly :scared1: literally! LOL!

I say.... do it!

:lmao:

We have had HIGH humidity all month here in KY. This year we have been some days more hot and humid then Florida.

Floyd hit in 99 and they shut everything down. You must have gotten lucky and missed it.

Honestly, there's just no telling. We Floridians currently have no plans to host a storm in August or September. ;)

It's not so much that Aug/Sept are the main months, but they are the main months for "Cape Verde" storms coming across the Atlantic from Africa (like 90L that we're watching right now). Those are the ones which pose the most threat to the east coast of Florida.

Once we get into October (:cool1::cheer2:) most of the tropical systems form in the Caribbean and move north into the Gulf of Mexico -- to torment folks other than us here in Miami. (but not always, of course)

To be serious for a second, there is very little chance of the Orlando area getting any significant effects from a hurricane. You'll have cosmetic damage (tree branches down), but no major buildings destroyed, power outages that last weeks, etc. That's significant damage; the little stuff is just inconvenience.
What are your experiences during these tropical storms? Is it fairly safe in the Orlando area during these types of storms? Just wondering?
You don't want to hear MY experiences. I still remember Andrew in 1992 like it was yesterday.

But Orlando is very safe, and Disney World is the safest place in Orlando. You have to keep in mind that WDW is +/- 100 miles inland from either coast. In 8-10 hours over land, a storm is not going to have much punch left by the time it gets to Orlando.

(Yeah, yeah, I know -- "I was in WDW for Charley and it was HORRIBLE!!!!!" :scared1::scared1: No it wasn't. You ain't seen horrible.)

Wanna know how safe WDW is? We Floridians usually just harden our houses against a storm and hunker down. We learned long ago that evacuation is a concept laden with problems.

But those who do evacuate...go to WDW.

We went in September a couple of years while children were not yet in school - one time after Katrina. It was hot in September but the parks were not very crowded. We really enjoyed it. We were caught in rain storms a few times with the ponchos, but never had the hurricane stuff.

I am unfortunately very experienced in horrible hurricanes. (WWW.aftertherainbook.com)
Orlando is where I am going next time!

We will be there mid September and are not too worried about crowds or weather. Last weekend it rained on us a litle but we were able to duck into the different countries in EPCOT til it passed.

Count on it getting hot and sticky, followed by a heavy downpour, followed by slightly more comfortable evenings. Go to bed and repeat the next day!

You'll be fine and with the sparse crowds in September, you'll have a great time no matter how hot, humid, stormy it gets!

Yeah...THAT's what I'm talking about! And Katrina was a strong Category 3 when she came ashore on the Gulf Coast.

With a Cat 5 like Andrew, you get entire subdivisions of concrete block apartment buildings leveled -- nothing but rubble piles 2 feet high. And the tree trunks are all sheared off at about 10 feet -- nothing higher. For miles and miles.

Don't worry about hurricanes in Orlando...
