we will need a hotel for around Walterboro SC on 95 and around Corneilus/statesville Nc ( a little north of Charlotte NC )on 77..any ideas or thought for good or horrendous ones? Thanks

We've stayed at both the Holiday Inn and the Comfort Inn at the Cornelius exit on 77. I prefer the Holiday Inn, even though it is a little older. It is across the street from the Acropolis Restaurant which we enjoy. It seems as though the last time we were through there that another hotel had just been completed--maybe a country inn and suites. There will be more choices in Statesville, but I haven't stayed there in years. Can't help with the Waterboro part.

There's a Hampton Inn that is fine in Walterboro.

I'm assuming one hotel is for your trip down and the other for th trip home -- right? I ask b/c Charlotte to Orlando is an easy one-day drive.

great about Charlotte..it looks like about the1/2 way pt. for home, on the way down we are going to drive farther the first days so more time to visit Mick.

I'm from Charlotte. Keep in mind if you are coming through on I-77, it is a parking lot for rush hour traffic. You will definitely want to time yourself so that you aren't on the road in the morning or afternoon rush hours during the weekdays. On weekends and during the day it will be fine. But if your itinerary has you hitting the city around those times, I would adjust accordingly. It could set you back hours.

Cornelius or Statesville should get you far enough away from the city to avoid any problems. Just dont' stop around the lake. It's bad as well.

I live in Cornelius! You can crash with us. LOL

There is a Hampton Inn at exit 28 that is sorta new.. it is walking distance from PRIME Steakhouse, and is really nice. The Holiday Inn is a bit older, and they have had a bit of crime in the past. But it really is not that bad either.

Traffic is bad through Charlotte, esp because they are working on the interstate to expand it to 4 lanes each way. FINALLY! But once you are past exit 23 it thins out pretty good. There are several hotels with walking distance to LOTS of food (lone star, chili's, OCharleys, Outback etc) at exit 25 in Huntersville. Both Cornelius and Huntersville have recently done some improvements on the intersections and I-77 access to assist with traffic in the AM. So that will not be much of a problem.

Hope I helped. If you have any specific ?s feel free to PM me.

Catherine's mama, keke and all you other n.carolinians, thanks for the traffic info, I'll have to check to see what time we get to charlotte,( althought we never seem to make it when we are supposed to, evidently we drive like "old people") btw did you ever hear of chuckey's by the lake .?. it's the law that we can't go through NC with out getting BBQ (lol) and that one was on restaurant .com ( one of our fav. states by the way... love the blue ridge!)

I've never heard of Chuck's by the Lake....I'll have to check that one out. I can't think of a BBQ spot that is on your route that I am familiar with. If you were on I-85 you could stop in Lexington where there are tons of great places.

There are 2 places in Charlotte off the Tyvola Road exit, however they are both chains. One is Sonny's and the other is Carolina Country BBQ. You'd turn right off the exit ramp and they are both on your right, very close together. I like Carolina Country best. I am glad to hear that others are appreciative of good barbecue! Down here we take it VERY seriously! :teeth:

Exit 36 is not too far past Charlotte. It is home of the Famous Lancasters BBQ (I think it is a Sonny's chain) in Morresville, NC (Race City USA). They have several good hotels and a Crackle Barrell (a must when I travel). If you have a travel book from AAA or are checking online. Look into Mooresville, NC (exit 36).

Oh, I have never heard of Chucky's either.

Hope this info helps. But really this would be a great place to stay. The area at this exit is safe, quiet, and the traffic is not crazy. Also, there is a SUPER TARGET. I don't know about anyone else, but I am hooked on this place.

Good Luck,

yUm Lancasters sounds like our kind of place. is it carry out? i could not tell from the menu. I can email them and find out the hours and such. good to know there is a cracker barrel too since I have a coupon for a free meal there which I have been saving but we could get the bbq on the way down and back and use the CB gc closer to home if we "had " to lol! hubby wanted to go to the bbq festival in lexington this year as a guy in Boone told us abut it earlier this summer. but we decided on disney instead... I mean I like bbq but we do have to have priorities!;) thanks for the help
