I came down with an earache. I'm taking Motrin and using a hot water bottle, but they're not helping much. Can't see the doc til tomorrow morning.

Anyone have some good home remedies? I don't want to stick anything odd in my ear, though. :)

Similasan Earache Relief Ear Drops help my family. You should be able to find them at most drug stores, WalMart, Target, etc.

Hope you feel better soon!

We always used sweet oil growing up. And it is what I still use, sort of. I make my own. Just take equal amounts of olive oil and hydrogen peroxide and mix together. It doesn't take much so only about a teaspoon of each. Put a few drops in the ear that is bothering you. Keep your head tilted for about 10 minutes. put a cotton ball in your ear. It will absorb what comes trickling out after you sit back up. Works like a charm every time!

Just a quick thought - I had a similar experience a few years ago where the pain medication and water bottle didn't help. It turned out the reason the hot water bottle wasn't working was I didn't have an ear infection instead had an infected tooth and the pain was traveling to my ear not my jaw :confused3. I was told this is actually common with rear molars and wisdom teeth when the trouble affects the nerves that run under them.. I'd suggest making a quick inspection of your teeth and gums on the affected side just in case.

A hair dryer. Sometimes heat will relieve the pain if it is caused by pressure.

Take a piece of heavy paper and make a hole in it, then put that on the side of your head to protect your face from the heat. Aim a warm blow drier at the ear from about 10 inches away.

Thanks for the suggestions, guys. My son is now complaining about his ears. :sad2: He already had gotten a nasty head cold, so I'm not surprised. Mine was different, though. Started out really itchy, then felt painful. It's starting to radiate down to my jaw now. 3boy, I sure hope you're wrong about the teeth, but I'm wondering if you don't have a point here! :scared1:

I find taking a decongestant like Sudafed really helps with the pressure in my ears. Feel better!

I second the hair dryer reccommendation. I have found this gives soothing, fast relief.

We always used sweet oil growing up, like someone else mentioned. My mom always poured a bit in a regualr spoon, warmed it up with a lighter and poured it i our ears, popped in a cotton ball and we were all set.

I was going to say teeth also. but this time around for me this week , a sinus infection! I always forget that when my teeth hurt, I am getting sick!

Hydrogen peroxide - It will tickle and crackle.

I was going to recommend the same thing.
In August, when my15 year old son flew to WDW, he ended up with a terrible earache and clogged ear for a few days. We called the pharmacy and had them deliver a bottle. A few times a day, I soaked a cotton ball with the peroxide, squeezed some into his ear and then left the cotton ball in his ear for a while. Within a few days, his ear had cleared out and he was fine.

Feel better!!

Be careful using heat. I had a nasty earache a few years ago and slept on a heating pad, woke up with relief from the pain, though I still had blockage. Turns out I perforated my eardrum using the heat. The Dr told me not to use heat with an earache.....

What!? No heat!?

:sad1: Please say it ain't so. My husband came home telling me the same thing... not about the perforated ear drum, but not to use heat on it.

I went out and got the Similasan and Sudafed. So far, no real easing of the pain. I feel like a baby, but this is really bringing me low.

A cotton ball dipped in pure olive oil, which you put in your ear.

Works like a charm!

I have swimmer's ear! I think I got it from my ear buds. I have the kind that go inside the ear. Although I don't wear them all that often, I noticed that my ears get really itchy and sore when I do wear them. I thought I just needed to get used to them. Sunday night when the pain really started in earnest, I'd had them on throughout the day and haven't been able to wear them since. I've been building up quite an ear infection!

Oh, and my DS has an ear infection too. We're quite the pair.
