                     Chocolate Ginger Cutout Cookies

  3               cups  flour
     1/2           cup  unsweetened cocoa powder
  1           teaspoon  baking soda
     3/4      teaspoon  ground ginger
     1/2      teaspoon  baking powder
     1/2      teaspoon  ground cinnamon
     1/4      teaspoon  salt
     1/4      teaspoon  ground cloves
     2/3           cup  shortening
     1/2           cup  sugar
  1                     egg
     1/2           cup  dark corn syrup
     1/4           cup  milk
  1                     egg white
  1         tablespoon  water
In a medium mixing bowl combine flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, ginger, baking powder, cinnamon, salt and cloves. 
In a large mixing bowl beat shortening with an electric mixer on medium speed for 30 seconds. Add sugar and beat until fluffy. Add whole egg, corn syrup and milk. Beat well. 
Beat in flour mixture, stirring in last part with a wooden spoon until well mixed.
Divide dough in half. Cover and refrigerate about 1 hour or until easy to handle. 
On a lightly floured surface, roll each portion of the dough 1/8" thick. Cut with 3-4" cookie cutters. 
Place on a greased cookie sheet.
Combine the egg white and water. Brush on cookie cutouts.
Bake 375 degrees for 5-7 minutes or until lightly puffed and set. Cool thoroughly on a wire rack. 
Pipe on decorator icing.

                        Blue Ribbon Sugar Cookies

  1                cup  butter -- softened
     1/2           cup  powdered sugar
     1/2           cup  sugar -- plus extra for dipping
  1                     egg
     1/2      teaspoon  vanilla
  2 1/4           cups  flour
     1/2      teaspoon  cream of tartar
     1/2      teaspoon  baking soda
Heat oven to 375°F. 
Combine butter, powdered sugar and sugar in large mixer bowl. Beat at medium speed, scraping bowl often, until creamy (1 to 2 minutes). Add egg and vanilla; continue beating until well mixed (1 to 2 minutes). Add flour, cream of tartar and baking soda. Reduce speed to low; beat until dough forms a ball (1 to 2 minutes).
Shape dough into 1-inch balls. 
Place 2 inches apart on ungreased cookie sheets. Flatten to about 1 1/2 inches with bottom of glass dipped in sugar; sprinkle with decorator sugars, if desired. 
Bake for 7 to 9 minutes or until edges are lightly browned. Let stand 1 minute; remove from cookie sheets. Cool completely.

  2               cups  confectioners' sugar
  1                     egg
     1/4           cup  sour cream
     1/4           cup  honey

  3 1/2           cups  all-purpose flour

  1           teaspoon  cream of tartar
     1/2      teaspoon  ground mace
     1/8      teaspoon  salt
                        white candy coating
                        greed paste food coloring
In a mixing bowl, cream butter and sugar. Beat in egg, sour cream, honey and vanilla.
Combine dry ingredients. Gradually add to creamed mixture. Cover and chill 2 hours or until easy to handle.
On lightly floured surface, roll dough out to 1/8" thickness. Cut with 3" cookie cutters dipped in flour. 
Place 1" apart on ungreased baking sheets.
Bake at 325 degrees for 8-10 minutes or until lightly browned. remove to wire racks to cool.
Melt candy coating. Stir in food coloring. Drizzle over cookies.

                       Old Fashioned Sugar Cookies

  1               drop  butter flavoring
     1/4      teaspoon  almond extract
Sift together flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt.
Cream shortening and sugar. Add eggs, milk, vanilla, butter flavoring and almond extract.
Blend dry ingredients into creamed ingredients. Mix well.
Chill dough, if desired.
Roll out to 1/16" thickness, cut into desired shapes.
Place on ungreased cookie sheet. 
Bake at 400 degrees for 5-7 minutes.

  1           teaspoon  baking powder
     1/4      teaspoon  salt
     1/2           cup  butter -- softened
  2        tablespoons  grated orange peel
  1                cup  sugar
     1/4           cup  orange juice
  2        tablespoons  lemon juice
Sift flour, baking powder and salt onto waxed paper.
Beat together butter, orange peel and sugar with electric mixer until fluffy. Stir in orange and lemon juices. Stir in dry ingredients until blended. Chill several hours or overnight.
Preheat oven to 375 degrees. 
Roll dough to a thickness of 1/6". Cut out with cookie cutters and place 1" apart on cookie sheets.
Bake for 8 minutes, until set and lightly golden. Cool on wire racks.
