Hilton Head lovers....

How is the weather in the first two weeks of September? Are the beaches less croweded then? Was thinking of a trip during this time of year, but I don't know how the availablitity would be at 7 mos.? A poster also said how big the studios are. Would the kitchen be big enough for a crock pot, maybe a plasitic dish rack? With airfare so high now, from Maryland we could make it there in a little over 10 hrs. If we drive down on a Sunday, are the roads into HHI too bad? Thanks for any info! :goodvibes

The weather in early September is still hot, humid summer weather, but, yes, the beaches are less crowded because kids have gone back to school. And everything else, i.e. restaurants, is easier to access as well. I would say you could easily manage a crock pot in a studio. After hearing about ceramic dishes being replaced in the studios at WDW, I would check and see if that decision affects what's in the studios at HH. You might need to bring utensils to cook w/ you. If you drive, I assume you'll just come down I-95 to SC 278. It's about 30 minutes to the Island from there. Except for Labor Day weekend, the road in shouldn't be too bad.

I have questions on Kids Nite Out....

First, do they really take the kids off-site to a regular theater? What do they do if there isn't anything playing that would be appropriate for younger kids?

Second, DS7 has autism, he is very high functioning and has done the kids clubs at WDW many times without a problem would this be something he can participate in?

When my kids did the Kids Night Out it wasn't to a movie theater, they had it at the resort, I think it was a scavenger hunt or a treasure hunt and pizza for dinner.

We drove down from Maryland on Saturday. We left at 4am and were here by 2pm. Stopped to eat for 45 minutes, plus stopped at a welcome center and twice for gas.

278 from I-95 is a well maintained road. The speed limit varies, 60-50-45-35, depending on where you are.

The kitchen is definitely big enough for a crock pot. The studios are larger then at WDW and are L-shaped, with the kitchen being sort of out of sight of the bedroom area. I like this configuration best of all the resorts for this reason.

The cups and glasses are gone, but there is palmolive dish soap and a sponge. After reading here, I packed a couple of mugs.

What I am no longer satisfied with here are the teeny tv's, especially after staying at AKV (and quite a few other hotels) with larger flatscreens. I hope they update the tv's and armoires soon.

OK- so, if we're arriving on Monday, Aug 11th, do you think everything will be filled up already?:sad1:

We went the second week of August in '07 and had no problem getting into any of the activities. We usually didn't even call for something until the day before. The activities that week were not filled at all! Now we didn't do the dolphin cruise though. But the activities at the resort and they are plenty of them all had room. For several of the activities it was just my two kids and another kid! Don't worry you will find plenty to do!

Thanks Judi! That's great about the roads/travel time. Airfare is unreal from BWi to Savannah right now. So glad you passed this info on! Now here's hoping I can get a studio in Sept. at 7 mos. Did you eat any seafood there around town?(Only someone from Maryland could attest to this! :goodvibes )

Thank-you, SO MUCH, for your post! I was hoping things might slow down a little by then because of some schools being back in session. I am one of those people who would normally run down to the activities counter the second I was checked in because I would hate to miss something, so it's good to know there's hope for me running down on Monday morning when I arrive and still being able to sign up for stuff. I do really want to do the dolphin cruise and the kayaks, so I guess I'll just hope for the best! Thank-you!:flower3:

We went to HHI in June of 2007. We have older kids and ended up with three 19 year olds, two in their mid-twenties, and ourselves. The kids (adults?) loved it. They are into skateboarding and went to the skate park at the lower end of the island when ever they could. They also skated around the island without any hassles. We also are a little adventuresome and ventured into a local place - The Frosty Frog - which is off of Pope Avenue. They have the greatest Daiquiris and the food is pretty good too. We had a great time relaxing and kicking around the island. One comment - Don't waste your time at Sea Pines Plantation - cost to just drive in and there are plenty of other things to do. We plan on returning in June of 2009.

Saturday evening we walked over to Scott's and I had shrimp and my daughter had the crabcakes. The fried shrimp were excellent and I think they are in season here right now. Definitely fresh with a light seasoned breading, nice and large. The crabcakes were very good. We ate inside and it's a little dated inside, but you can eat outside by the water and I would choose this next time. We had no appy's or desserts and just tea and coke for drinks. Bill was $52.

We are debating on steak somewhere or seafood again this evening at Boatwrights. Yesterday we had a late lunch at the beach house and didn't feel like dinner so just snacked in the room.

how hard is it to get into HH during the summer if you don't own there?

How were the beaches in June? Really crowded? That's why I'm leaning towards Sept. Is it hard to find your way around the town of Savannah? I'll have to get a local map.

I was thinking on bringing a crock pot, and a dishrack with a couple of dishes, glasses, and mugs! Also thought about a small electric griddle/pan. Sounds like the studios would be big enough for them. So, do the studios have the good views like the 1 bdrms. do in the lodge house?

So are most of these places within walking distance, or must you drive most of the time?

I have gotten 2 two bedrooms for either end of June or Middle of July by calling day by day at the 7 month window. Studios and 1 bedrooms are harder to come by, and Grand Villas are a joke.

So are most of these places within walking distance, or must you drive most of the time?

There are a few restraunts within walking distance, but some worth trying, you have to drive.

Here is a great HHI Dining thread... http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=766557 Enjoy!

Here is a photo from mid July, we were near the tidepool and it was a bit more crowded around us, than either direction down the beach.

Someone in one of the current HHI threads mentioned how hard it is to find things there because of all the landscaping (which is true, dont try and find something after dark, if you have no idea where it is, becuase signage on the island is stealth.

I have said many many times the world would be a better place if all the parking lots look like they do on HHI...

There would only be 2 of us traveling (DH and me). Trying to decide between a studio (at the lodge) or a one bedroom. I hear the studios are really big, so don't know if it would be worth the points. Can anyone comment from experience? Thanks.:goodvibes
