Hillbillies head South! March 2-11, 2012 COMPLETED 6/26

Awesome updates! I couldn't imagine going to Disney with that many family members. It stresses me out just trying to keep DH and 2 kids happy. :rotfl2:

I would absolutely love to stay at the Poly! I just can't justify the high price (not that we'd be able to afford it even if it was justified). :lmao:

I couldn't believe they didn't offer some sort of comp for all the issues. I think if I booked a mono-resort and the mono was down half the time, I'd be LIVID. And then the slide down. :sad2: And then Dole Whips? Wow....

Loved your updates and your pictures! Sorry you had some check-in issues and didn't get all of your requests. Waiting for more! popcorn::

What an excellent first day Sandy!!! I just love all the Poly pictures - that is such an amazing resort and we always have the most magical moments when are there, even if we never stay there. LOL

I love Tink's hair - I used to do my girls' like that all the time when they were little - it was so easy to take care of! Brilliant idea to have that done for vacation!

I can't wait to hear about the rest!

D~

great photos!
the Minnie cake is cute. I'm glad they remembered it.
The HM new stuff looks fun too.
great first day report

I was really worried about it. And check-in day was a rough start, sorta. But after that, it really wasn't a problem. You'll see that we didn't stay together much, which was probably the key, LOL. It actually was very nice!

It is hard to justify the Poly...but we live fairly frugally in regular life, very responsibly. The Poly is our splurge!!

I never asked for comp - it seemed no one was getting anything, and I didn't want to waste my time on vacation on something futile. Plus I figured I'd get worked up for nothing. So I just let it go. I still think they should lower their rates a bit in these situations.

Thank you!!! We discovered the cornrows at Myrtle Beach back in 2006. Saw how convenient it was for keeping hair out of her way and keeping it looking "calm" (she has a LOT of hair). Now it's our go-to vacation style!!

Thanks for reading!!! The cake was great!

I would love to have a splurge! Our finances are pretty tight, so our splurge is any vacation. :lmao: But one day, perhaps we can come up with the splurge for a deluxe! Poly is at the top of my list ... and the top of DH's list. He has always said that if we could ever afford a deluxe, it would be the Poly -- and I've tried to get him to splurge on AKL, since it's the cheapest deluxe.

I wouldn't have asked for a comp either ... but they should have automatically DONE something. Given you a few percent off your bill, some FPs to use, a free gift. SOMETHING. They should have done it automatically since there was so much going wrong. Even lowering the rates by like 2% would have been nice. Given you a credit on your account or something. I dunno. I don't think guests should have to ask for a comp in cases when all the reasons to book a resort are out of order. It's not like you planned for those things to be unavailable and still booked. I don't think they should have done anything BIG or lavish. Something small and kind to show they are sorry that they've taken away several things that makes the Poly so appealing. Heck a coupon for a free ice cream would have been a start. :thumbsup2 But that's just me. And if I was in your shoes, I wouldn't have complained or said anything, but deep down I would have wished they had offered some kind of "we're sorry" comp. Even a card delivered to our room signed by characters would have been nice.

(Speaking of which ... has anyone else gotten a personalized "signed" card in the mail? I keep meaning to take a picture of it ... it's printed on photo paper and has some of the characters and the castle and print-signed by characters -- the whole thing is printed, not personally signed, but printed-signed, if that makes sense.)

Day 3 - Sunday, March 4 - Epcot, Ohana, Magic Kingdom

Another day in Disney!! What could be better than that??

The weather today was not supposed to be good - cool (60's for highs) and rainy. We woke up to some wet ground outside, but the sun was shining. We were so lucky...it stayed that way ALL day!! Cool, yes, but very pleasant for walking around. Just no swimming today.

We had quick breakfasts in the room this morning - don't remember if it was stuff we brought or pastries from Captain Cook's. But everyday was one of those!!

So today we had all decided to go to Epcot in the morning. Sleeping Beauty soon reported that Pooh and Buzz were worn out from the busy day before and they were going to let them sleep in before heading to Epcot.

So, MIL, Grumpy's family and our family all headed to the Epcot monorail. We were meeting PC and Beast there (they took the bus).

I think we arrived shortly before opening at 9, but as is the new policy, everything was open already.

WHY, I ask you, WHY are the turnstiles such a problem at Epcot???? ALWAYS!! Lines back up, people don't have a clue, it takes forever. I hate it!!

But of course we all made it through.

Disney2012053.jpg

Heads up that I didn't take many photos today at all. Not sure why??

The 3 kiddos all wanted Test Track first, so that's where we headed. Very little wait. This is such a fun ride. I'm both worried and excited to see what they do with it during the refurb. We did get the pictures on our Photopass, I'll try to remember to add that here once I have it.

Next was Mission Space (easy side). Cruella and I don't do this one, so we took everyone's KTTW and headed over to get Soarin' Fast Passes. Return time was 12-1 I believe? It was already getting crowded.

Met back up with all of them and I think we rode Test Track again - well everyone but MIL. She was glad she did it once, but didn't want to do it again.

Around this time, we heard from Eeyore that they were in the park and heading to get Soarin Fast Passes. We met up with them in The Land pavilion. Their passes were from 1-2, so we decided that 1 would be a good time for us ALL to ride together!!

Unbelievably (to me at least) there was about a 15 minute wait for The Land. I never see a wait for that!! We did that all together, the boys remarking on farming stuff the whole time.

At this point, it was only about 11 am. But everyone was hungry (except Eeyore's crew, having just had breakfast). We also knew we had early ADR's at Ohana, which we love and wanted to pig out at. So we made the decision to have an early lunch. Our family, PC and Beast all wanted Mexican, so we headed over there. Grumpy's family and MIL stayed and ate at Sunshine Seasons if I remember correctly.

We all agreed to meet at Soarin' to ride together at 1.

We headed over to Mexico
Disney2012054.jpg

and there were no lines, it was so early. DD and I had had that fabulous lunch last year, so we knew what we wanted. Nachos for me and Empanada(s) for her. Again, I'll put the details in the dining report. Hope to start that later today. Suffice it to say, that it was a very nice lunch!!! That seating area is so nice!! Sorry no pics!!

We decided to do the boat rides after that - Mexico and then Norway (twice).
Disney2012055.jpg

You can see how we are bundled up in this photo!!

By this time, we decided to head back over to Soarin. There was time for Figment...but no one was interested!! Actually, as we started walking, both Beast and I needed to pee- BAD!! Came on so fast for both of us and we were running to the restrooms!!

Met everyone at Soarin' a few minutes early, and as soon as Eeyore's passes were good, we all went in. Even with FastPasses, it's still quite a wait here. Probably 20+ minutes. We all wanted front row, so we were on 2 different "vehicles" (can't remember what they call them).

This ride was fun as usual, but I did notice the poor video quality many here on the Dis have mentioned. Time for an update!!

At this point, we all split up again. I think Grumpy and family (and MIL), she kept sticking with them for the most part went to WS for awhile? Can't remember. Eeyore and crew were getting lunch (which made me nervous, with dinner at Ohana in just 4 hours!). Beast was not feeling well. She has also had bronchitis before we left and felt like it was coming back. They decided to head back to CSR for a nap.

We did a few more things before heading back - Nemo (no Crush, they didn't want to?? Couldn't believe it, I love that!!) and then Spaceship Earth.

Then we monorailed back to the Poly. I honestly don't remember what we did at this point. I know we didn't swim, it was too cold. Guess we just relaxed for awhile. I think I read my book.

I've gotta run now, so I'll be back with our evening activities later!!

so glad the weather held out for you
doesn't sound like the lines were bad at all
looking forward to more...

I just cannot imagine doing Disney with such a large group! KUDOS to you for choosing to "pick your battles" when it came to all the stuff not in operation at the Poly. I agree with the rest in that they should have done SOMETHING for you all. It would have been so hard for me not to "go off" on someone, but like your DH, mine is usually the voice of reason too. Can't wait to join your dining report, I just :lovestruc Disney food!!!

Thank you! Yep, we were so lucky. It rained over night that night and then we had a slight rain one other day. We were at the pool at that time and just swam right through it...and then the sun was back out!!

Lines were not that bad, but the parks sure seemed crowded at times. Just lots of people around!

Yes, my DH is definitely the voice of reason, while I tend to be hot-headed.

I do wish Disney would consider just pre-emptively providing something when they have such closures at the resorts. Even a fast pass for everyone would be nice!! I did read here on the DIS that parts of Stormalong Bay will be closing, including the slide, very soon. It seems those folks at least got letters informing them. We were not informed at all - found out about all of it online here at the DIS/Tikiman's site. I even didn't mention any of it at check-in to see if THEY would. NOPE!! Not a word, not even a helpful hint or maybe flyer about alternate transportation with the monorail down. Disney can do better!

Day 3 - Sunday, March 4 (continued)

So after resting a bit, we showered and dressed...getting ready for one of our favorite places, Ohana!! We all (those of us who had been) just love the food and atmosphere there. We specifically booked a Sunday, to have the "guy" as opposed to Lipoa. Very nice lady, but her voice, for an hour+ is more than we can take!!

Everyone had decided tonight would be "Hawaiian theme wear" (nice!). However, most of this was very light, and it was getting quite chilly. We decided to just wear it to dinner, then come back and change before going to MK for the night. Why not - we're right there!!

Unfortunately, Beast started feeling worse right as they were getting to come over. Very nauseous. They ended up not coming. Good news is...it passed and they came over after dinner to go to MK. Bad news...couldn't get into Ohana the rest of the week and they love it :( They made the best of it, though, and cancelled Cape May Buffett and rescheduled for Fulton's Crab House on Tuesday night. They LOVED that!! So it all worked out. But PC really wants to get back to Ohana!!

We were again seated at 2 round tables next to each other. Service was again a problem. He brought it all on one check!!!! We had 13 people - 4 different dining plans and DH's aunt paying cash. Cruella was able to change our ADR to add Aunt Alice, we were happy for that. Got it all worked out though.

The food was as wonderful as usual! Again, more in the dining report. Here's a pic of the group:
Disney2012057.jpg

Nemo participated in the games a bit. And Tink and Buzz went up for the birthday celebration:
Disney2012059.jpg

Disney2012060.jpg

After dinner, we all went and changed into WARM clothes. Eeyore and crew went back to Epcot. Since they arrived later, their TT fastpass was for late. They had spent a long time at the MK yesterday anyways. MIL decided to stay back with Aunt Alice. Cruella and I thought we might bring Nemo and Tink back to them if they crashed early, but we never did. The rest of us went to MK.
Disney2012062.jpg

I think this is when we discovered that IN ADDITION to the monorail being closed some days during the day....it was also closing earlier at night. Most (maybe all) nights, it closed at 10:30 - no matter what time the MK closed. Tonight, regular hours were to 11, EMH until 2 am. This was highly disappointing!!

Again, getting it all mixed up. But I know we did Haunted Mansion (again), Snow White, Philharmagic (our first time, very cute!), Tea Cups, Speedway, People Mover, Buzz, Stitch. We started off all together, but eventually Grumpy and family split off from the 6 of us. I know Peter Pan and Pooh Bear lines were too long. We did find Grumpy again later and he gave Beast and Woody fastpasses for Space Mtn. They did that while we did CoP (Tink wasn't feeling up to SpMtn for some reason).
Disney2012063.jpg

Disney2012064.jpg

We didn't use much PhotoPass this trip, no one wanted pictures (except me!) We did get one of the 6 of us in front of the castle this night. I'll add that once I have it.

That's all I really remember. I know we stayed until about midnight and then took the launch back to the Poly. That was COLD!!!!! We were DEFINITELY missing the monorail at this point. And then we crashed in bed of course !

Great updade Sandy! I love all the outfits for Ohana - we didn't even think to dress up that day...

D~

Sorry for delay in updating...it's been a busy Spring Break around here. The kids and I have had a lot of fun, but I've been doing my usual work (I work from home, 2 jobs) before, between and after as well...so not much free time. Check out all the fun we've had though: painted and redecorated DD's room, Easter with family of course, 2 movies (Mirror, Mirror and Titanic), swimming at the Rec, lunch and free pie at Baker's Square, bowling with friends, Easter gift card shopping at Justice and Dick's, lunch at the mall, baseball and softball practice and then today- African Safari drive-through Wildlife Park and Yogurt Vi!! We were all REALLY sick before and during their Christmas break, so we crammed lots of fun into this break!

But, I'm back and I'll have an update up soon. In the meantime...I just started my dining report!!! Check it out, link in my siggy!

Day 4 - Monday, March 5 - DHS

Today didn't exactly go as planned. But, heck, it's another day in Disney, so that means it was a GREAT day!!!

The plan for today was to sleep in after the late night at MK the night before (open till 2 AM), maybe take a swim, and then head over to DHS around noon. We had F! Pkg. lunch reservations at 2:15, so we would have a late start, and then stay for F! and evening EMH.

Well here's what ACTUALLY happened.... (is that how they said it in "Clue"??? that just jumped into my head!)

we didn't stay quite as late at MK the night before, though it was still late. We slept in a bit, but I think we were all up and about around 9. Another in-room breakfast. After yesterday's cool weather, it was still too cold to swim this morning. We all kind of just hung around a bit and said What the heck...we might as well head to DHS! What else were we going to do?

Nemo had slept in the most and was then demanding a Mickey waffle when we were all ready to go. So Grumpy's crew and MIL said they'd catch up with us in a bit.

Since we knew the parking lot would be crowded at this point, we decided to take the bus. We, along with Eeyore and family, headed to the bus stop. We have NEVER taken a bus from the Poly. We always just drive. Once, I took one back from DTD solo after my fam headed back before me. But we've never taken one from the Poly....

and that holds true to this day!!!!!!!! We got to the bus stop and there were just a few people there. The CM said the DHS bus would be there in about 10 minutes. OK, no problem. We moved over to one side and the kids were playing, etc. Took a pic to kill time:
Disney2012068.jpg

We waited...and waited...and waited... for a HALF HOUR!! THREE DTD buses came in that time. AK, Epcot, TL, whatever else. Anything and everything but DHS. The CM had no information. At this point, the crowd at the bus stop had really grown. Of course there was no line and even though we were one of the first for DHS, we were worried that we wouldn't even get ON the bus, especially if there were a lot of people already on it from Contemporary or wherever. And who knew when it would actually come. So, Lotso and Eeyore went back to the rooms and got the car keys and we drove to DHS.

Of course, we were in the back of the lot, but luckily caught a tram right away. Grumpy, meanwhile, went to the TTC and caught a DHS bus right away...beat us there!! Lesson learned!!

Disney2012070.jpg

Can't really tell it from that pic, but Boy was the park PACKED!! TSM fast passes were long gone by this point. I think this was around 11 or so. TSM wait was an hour or more, don't remember exactly. I think we went and got RRNC fast passes, all of us. Everyone except Tink, myself, Beast and Lotso went to ToT. I think the wait was about 30 or 40 minutes? Tink and I wanted to do American Idol, so we went over to that and Beast and Lotso just hung out.

AI was really fun. We like the show and found this enjoyable. The girl we voted for didn't win, though.

We come out to find everyone and get quite the story....they all waited for ToT, got on, it went up and down a few times and then...STOPPED. OMG, that would be my worst NIGHTMARE. I HATE that ride. They didn't know how high they were or anything. AWFUL. I guess after a few minutes, they slowly lowered them down. They shut the ride down for awhile, so they all got Fast Passes to ride anytime - they were good for a few days.

We split up again at this point. I don't remember where Grumpy, family and MIL went. Eeyore's crew wanted to do Star Tours, as did Woody. So he went off with them. They enjoyed that and also got some smoothies - Eeyore texted me a picture saying Woody was enjoying his first margarita ;) Beast, PC, Lotso, Tink and I went to The Great Movie Ride. I've never done this as an adult. We enjoyed it. Nothing fabulous, but the wait was only about 15 minutes, so it was good.

Disney2012071.jpg

Disney2012072.jpg

Then we walked over to the Honey, I Shrunk...playground. CROWDED!! But, Tink, PC and Lotso just HAD to see the dog's nose. So we played around a bit.

Then it was time to head over towards Mama Melrose and meet everyone for lunch.

Disney2012079.jpg

Oh, Mama Melrose....your food is good, but your service just plain stinks!! I'll save the details for the Dining Report. But suffice it to say for here...we checked in at 2 and I think we left this restaurant at 4:30!!!!!!!!! But here's a nice pic of everyone:
Disney2012080.jpg

After dinner, we were all a bit cranky. DHS was just so crowded, you could barely move. We went and used the RNRC Fast Passes. Tink was too full from lunch so decided not to ride...something she would really regret later in the week you'll see (no worries, though, it all worked out). So she and Nemo stayed with Beast and I while the rest rode. After that I think we tried to go back to ToT. If I remember correctly, it was running again, but the FP line was REALLY long. I hope I'm remembering that right. Since the FP's were good for days, they decided to wait.

At this point, we had a pow wow. MIL was done for the day, even though she had wanted to see F! We had just seen F! the year before, and didn't really care. We didn't know WHAT to do to spend the time to F! The park was just too crowded. Eventually, Eeyore and crew decided to stay. I know they ended up waiting over an our for TSM. I don't think they did F! I think they saw a few shows. The rest of us headed back to the Poly (and Beast and PC to CSR). In good news, us drivers all beat the bus riders back, LOL.

Continued in next post due to picture count!!

By now, it was warmer. Too cold for us adults to swim...but not the kids!! Since the Volcano Slide was still closed (oh, update on that...it didn't open on the 4th like the note in the room said. On the 5th, a new note said hopefully the 9th :( ) we talked the kids into swimming in the quiet pool. Quiet, for one, but also tons of lounge chairs. Poor Grumpy had to get in with Nemo, but the rest of us stayed cozy in sweatshirts and fleece and just RELAXED. Beast and PC came over to hang out with us. This was one of my favorite times of the trip. Lotso went over to the pool bar and got us girls Strawberry Daquiris and himself and Beast some sorts of drinks. The kids were having fun and we were chilling. Perfect!! Got some great photos as the sun went down.

Once it was dark, it really got cold quick. Nemo was tired. MIL was staying in Grumpy's room that night. Her package had ended, and Aunt Alice had gotten a hotel near DTD. Instead of going there, she just stayed with them. Her and Nemo ended up going to sleep early and Grumpy and Cruella had a nice evening in MK by themselves. The 6 of us decided to hop the monorail and get some dinner at the Contemporary.

We'd never eaten QS there, but had seen it from CM's. Contempo Cafe was a great choice. None of us were VERY hungry, since we had a big meal in the mid-late afternoon, but we all needed something. I think we all used QS except Lotso who just had a snack. I don't think anyone finished everything though. I'll have the rest for the dining report, but I had a GREAT sandwich...you'll have to read it!

This was a late dinner, it was probably 9 or 9:30 at this point. After dinner, we monorailed back over said goodbye to Beast and PC and hit the sack. Another big day in Disney tomorrow!!

I thought everyone at WDW was at AK that day. :confused3 I can't believe DHS was so crowded ... it was wall-to-wall at AK. It was CRAZY!

You guys look like you had a blast at the pool! Too cold for my blood for swimming, but my kids would swim in the snow if I allowed it. :lmao:

Sorry you had terrible experience at Mama Melrose's. I've never heard any good reports about it, so we've stayed clear.

I was pretty shocked at crowds overall this week. It was definitely more crowded than late March last year. None of the sites predict that! It wasn't horrible but I thought it would be lighter.

We actually had GREAT food there last year and good food this year. But bad service issues both times, so we won't go back.

I'm used to 6-7s ... and I'd much prefer my 6-7s than those 1s we had. :scared1:

Great pool pics!! It looked like a ton of fun, we only squeezed in about an hour of swimming this time.

The crowd etimates had to be waaaay off somehow. I remember checking out dates several times with projected highs in the 9's and lows in the 6s, but the crowds never felt that bad and then I got several "updated" lower projections. The only really crowded day we had was our AK day. They must of estimated too light for your guys' time and too heavy for when we went....:confused3...seems like they have more work to do in perfecting that part of the service....
