My dog has gone deaf :(

If he was previously afraid of thunder, it'll be nicer during storms now... that was the best when my guy became deafer.

Also if he likes to excessively bark at the door/other noises, that'll be a positive change.

Just remember to nudge the bed to wake him up, rather than nudging him directly.

Is your puppy "less young"? I remember when we discovered that our cat had gone deaf-he was 12 1/2, and for some reason, I just noticed he didn't respond to noise one day. But he remained happy and healthy for almost 4 years after that. It's amazing how well they adapt.

Does your vet have any medical opinion on what has happened?

I do agree that others say the dogs will adapt, but be cautious of suddenly startling them…and be careful if any small children visiting your home want to suddenly give your dog a hug!

it there is still some hearing I might work on some hand signals training if you have voice commands to sit stay come etc. flicking lights on/off can also get attention. stamping floor for vibrations.. They adapt pretty well, and sometimes it helps as others have said with barking and fear of storms, fireworks.

My dog has been deaf now for a at least a couple, she is 16. Now her sight is mostly gone as well, she navigates my nose and memory for the most part. She gets a lot of help with being carried on the stairs and if she gets 'lost" in her little fenced yard area.

They found an infection in his ear, but that's cleared up and he still doesn't respond to sound. Luckily he still has his sight! He's 13 now.

Hearing damage is often permanent, just like with humans, when damaged, the sensory structures just do not regrow.

FYI: mine went through a barking phase when she was losing her hearing. Every night in the evening for about a year she would sit on her favorite chair and bark at nothing for about 10 minutes, I wonder if she was having some tinnitus or something, or just liked to hear herself or was trying to hear herself. Now she no longer does that. My husband liked to say the old lady dog just wanted to sit and *****... get off my porch you kids.

As a thought, we taught our dog to identify basic hand signals for commands. Consider teaching some combined word and Han signals while they have sight and some hearing.

Stay, come, or whatever you commonly use.
