highlight and cut tip

I like to give nice tips to my hair dresser when she does my hair. Depending on the service, I will leave $20-25. $3-$6 for a haircut is awful unless you're going to Hair Cuttery or Fantastic Sams.

I have thin, can't do anything with it hair. The only reason that pleases me is that it means that I can go to a salon and pay a mint for a hair cut and it will look exactly like the haircut I get at the Cheapo place in the strip mall near my house.

I pay $14.00 for my haircut and tip another $4.

I don't understand why you have to pay extra for "whole head" highlights, either. They don't charge extra to cut the hair on your WHOLE head, so why to highlight it? But, I pay them what they ask. Would never quibble with the stylist, as she might sic the Hair Gods on me. :scared:

Maybe due to extra product/time it takes to foil the whole head?

Even if the haircut is only $25? I'd leave $5 on a $25 haircut -- that's 20%. Is that really too little?

For me, personally, the quality is not even close to the same. I can go to Cost Cutters and they will do a basic cut and I am done and out the door in 20 min. No wash which I personally like as it makes me feel a little pampered. And I have incredibly thick hair. When they just do their quick cut, I am left with chunky areas and areas that are too dense. I started going to a pricey salon in Feb. I am in love with it. The stylist thins out the areas of my hair that need it, she does a scalp massage with some hydrating stufff, she makes sure that my hair is exaclty right before I walk out the door. (I also get a foil and an all over color.) This costs me $145 and takes about two hours. I leave a $25 tip. I always get an appointment quickly. (Oh and this is an increased tip amount after I myself asked on the DIS boards too.)
I have pretty low maintenance hair.

I can see where there would be a difference with a different texture of hair. My neighbor has thick hair & will pay an arm & a leg for someone to do it right.

Yes, even on $25. I have REALLY hard to manage hair and it's taken years for me to find a hairdresser that can cut and style it where I do not look like a poodle coming out of a dryer. She's worth every penny!

I am very low maintenance, in that I just get a cut. I color at home, but still, it's always around 20%. The guy who did my hair Friday pulled out all the stops, used a bunch of products and didn't charge for the blow dry (this place does). He got 25%.

My mom was one who went to the 'beauty parlor' every Friday so she could look great for work (waitress-the money nights were Fri-Sun) and my job was to bring the tip to the stylist and the shampoo girl.

I am even lower maintenance, since I have never colored or highlighted my hair. No gray here either.;)

Do you see this crazy, curly mop on my head? I pay alot by some standards and not by some standards. I've had some baaaaaaaaad haircuts and since afros are outta style I have to try hard to keep my hair in some resemblance of a style.

We also have to realize that costs is going to change according to location throughout the country. Big city vs smaller city or state vs state.

I pay over $100 here to get my hair done and that includes hair cut, style and tip. It takes almost 2 hours to do my hair when she blow dries and straightens it out after the cut, color and wash.

When in AR at my first stylist I would pay under 80 total for the same stuff.

I tip around 20% also

It is really true. I am 46 with no gray. I am expecting to awake on morning and all my hair will be gray.:lmao: :lmao:

I hate you!!!

I am 40 and I have little gray hairs all over. Why me????

My goodness you guys shell out a lot of money on your hair! Your business, of course, but it's a bit of a shock to me.

I got my hair cut last at Super Cuts. I get compliments all the time. Just as many as I got when I got my hair cut at a high end salon here. I don't highlight, but I was considering it since I'm getting a few greys here and there. Maybe I'll just let the grey come in. I can't imagine spending that much money on a few highlights.

Sometimes if you have really great hair, it just doesn't matter. I know a woman who has fabulous hair and it looks great whether she goes to the Hair Cuttery or to a nicer place.

I have really fine, soft hair and tons of it. I've tried the cheaper salons and none of the stylists their seem to know how to thin hair out nor do texturizing--something I really need. My hair looks awful without it. I am now going to a mid-level salon that charges $35 for a haircut and the girl has some decent texturizing skills so I've got an okay haircut now. But not as good as the woman who was doing my hair at $65 a cut. My hair looked great with her but it just got to be too hard to keep up with her as she kept changing salons.

At 43, I have about 5 gray hairs!!! For the first time in many years, I have totally grown out my highlights and I get a lot of compliments on my natural color. The only downside is that the highlights really give my fine hair TONS of texture and manageability. So, I'm struggling a bit with it all right now.

It costs me £65 ($130) for a cut and half-head highlights. This is through a family friend who owns a salon. The cheapest quote I got from a salon was £110 ($220) for the same thing. I tip him well, because he does it so cheap for me. I normally pay £75 ($150) with tip.

I get my hair done every 3 months, so that's 4 times a year. I LOVE the way my hair looks. That said, I am having him dye it back to my natural brown next month. I cannot afford to be spending £300 ($600) a year on my hair (before hair products etc.). I'll leave it my natural color and spend £15 ($30) getting it cut 4 times a year instead - £60 a year ($120) WITH tip.

Can we see some pictures of all of you guys who are spending so much? Maybe it is worth it. Maybe my hair doesn't look as good as I think it does. :confused3

Oooh you can see me because I posted this in another thread earlier!

I have half-head highlights. This means he dyes the top layer of my hair, right up to the roots, and some towards the front so it doesn't look weird when I tie my hair back.

The main reason for this is that it takes 4 hours to do my highlights anyway (I have REALLY thick hair - you can't tell from the picture because it was straightened that night).

So the top layers are dark blonde and the under layers are my natural medium brown. Since I have layered hair, this means that the ends of my hair are medium brown. I REALLY like it...I'd like to dye the underneath of my hair and even darker brown for more of a contrast but I don't really have the time or the money to be messing around with and upkeeping my hair right now :sad2:

Anyway here's a cheesy photo of me looking very tipsy...you can kinda see the different colors between the top and the bottom of my hair :)

I went from brunette to blonde and it takes a lot of maintenance. I pay around $200 for full highlights (multiple shades of blonde) and I always tip 20%.

Because of the extreme color change, I went to one of the top stylists at the salon. She's good at what she does and I value her expertise.

ETA: The price I quoted above includes a trim and blowout too.
