highlight and cut tip

I tip at least 20%, sometimes a little more if I've had a time-consuming process.

OK so a few have said they pay a higher % if they receive a more expensive service. Why? That just doesn't make sense to me.
Say you pay $30 for a cut, $60 for cut/color
10% of 30 would be $3
10% of 60 would be $6
The tip goes up as the price of the service goes up.
Why would you tip a higher percentage? I would get "it" if you weren't paying more for the "extra" service.

I tip at least 20% no matter what the service. 10% is ridiculously low and I would not expect good service (if any) on subsequent visits. 15-20% is a much more appropriate range.

However, for really inexpensive treatments (i.e. lip wax) I may tip a higer percentage because I'm not comfortable just giving someone $2 - I find it to be insulting.

Same thing when I go to a diner for breakfast - our check may only be $20 - but I'll leave $6. I'd feel like a cheapskate if I left less. I know others could leave $3 and feel good about it - I can't.

I also know that I never have a problem securing last minute appointments or reservations and I believe it's because we acknowledge and reward the service employees (hair, restaurant, facials, etc.) that take care of my family.

So - their reward ends up being our reward as well. Karma, I suppose. :thumbsup2

Who said I've ever had professional highlights?

Good lord...are you ALWAYS so argumentative?

Anyway, I've never had coloring or highlights done. On a $30 haircut/blowdry, I'd give probably $5, but only because it's an even amount. I really should probably give more, but I never gave it much thought.

Are highlights really that expensive? Holy moly!!

Half head highlights at a moderate salon will run $60-120, not including the cost of the cut.

Not trying to be snarky, but where are you going that it's that cheap? I was paying hundreds at salons and one day needed a highlight and didn't have an appt, and lucked out and got a fabulous stylist at Hair Cuttery. My cut and foil highlights were $80 and I thought that was an awesome bargain, and it looked great. Unfortunately, once the stylists can hold their own at Hair Cuttery they either open their own business, or go to a higher end salon, where the prices go up accordingly.

Wow. Stupid question...what are "half head highlights"? I have a visual of someone with just their right side done.

Are you always such a *****?
Sorry, but that's the pot calling the kettle black. I've seen you get nasty with people on two separate threads in two days. Maybe you're just having a bad couple of days, but it's really not called for or necessary.

Never really understood the etiquette of tipping - why the hairdresser but not the dental hygienist. Why the taxi driver but not the bus or train driver? :confused3 I know supermarket staff who earn less than waitresses but nobody tips them for service.

In the U.S., unless there is a state law, most waitresses are making $2.13 an hour. Supermarket staff has to be making AT LEAST minimum wage, and many get union benefits as well. Many do offer a service to carry groceries to your car, but they aren't allowed to accept tips.

Hahahaha....that's when they only do the top half...you wouldn't notice if the person wears their down all the time, but since I wear my hair half up or in a pony tail a lot, I always do full head. Maybe that's why I've never paid just $50, LOL.

My haircut and highlights for a half head cost around $145...I tip about 30 /35 dollars

Seriously? A thread about tipping a hairdresser is turning snarky? :rotfl2:

I know, already on a Sunday morning!

It's called a "partial foiling" around here. Instead of doing the entire head of hair, they just do mostly in the top/front and sides, as opposed to all over. Costs less because it takes less time and less product to use.

Always, ALWAYS 20% at the very minimum for any beauty service (mani, pedi, facial, massage, etc.), unless it's just really lacking, in which case I'll mention to the management why I'm only leaving 15%. I have an outstanding relationship with my hairdresser and wouldn't dream of letting another person touch my hair. It's to the point that if we end up having to move away from here, I'll schedule visits back here around hair appointments. She gets 25% each time, which comes out to about $30-$40 for the hour to 1 1/2 hours she spends on my hair. And she's worth every single penny, too.

At Christmas, I typically add an additional $50.

OMG OMG OMG!
Here we have national minimum wage for adult workers, whether hairdresser, waitress or what. In October it goes up to the equivalent of $11.15 an hour. So you know that any low paid worker will be getting at least that an hour. I know, of course, that cost of living in the UK will make a difference to how far that goes, but even so there is not so a HUGE gap between service industry staff and, say, shop workers. That is why I couldn't understand tipping such a high amount.

actually I only pay about $20 for a cut but I do go to a "chain" place.
However my mom goes to a locally owned place and pays about $25 for a cut. 45 for cut and color.
The most expesive place I know of around here charges about $60 for a cut, but I consider it more of a mini spa. Her price includes a glass of wine, hand massage and parafin treatment, facial and make-up application. I have no idea what she charges for color services.

Seriously?!!??! A FACIAL? They run more than $60 themselves around here.

You are paying for their time when you pay for the service.
They charge more for services that take longer.
I tip on the service also, not the time taken. A more expensive service takes more time.

Not trying to be snarky, but where are you going that it's that cheap?
I'm wondering why the services are so expensive everywhere else. I get my hair cut & colored every 6 weeks at a full service salon (massage, pedicure, manicure, etc.) The price just went up $3 & is now $38. I tip 20%.

My mom used to be a hairdresser & the cost of the products are dirt cheap compared to the prices people are paying. A perm is a few bucks, color is a few bucks, so it's not the product you're paying for, it's the service & time.

I just can't justify paying that much money to someone when I can get the same quality service at a less expensive price. The time taken is pretty much the same anywhere you go.

BTW - I always get compliments on my hair & have sent many customers to my hairdresser that are still with her.

No doubt. On average at every spa I've ever been to, facials start at about $85 and go up to over $200. No haircut included.
