highlight and cut tip

No doubt. On average at every spa I've ever been to, facials start at about $85 and go up to over $200. No haircut included.

Anne

My goodness - the owners must be seriously loaded, as they are obviously not paying their staff much out of these prices. :sad2:

actually I only pay about $20 for a cut but I do go to a "chain" place.
However my mom goes to a locally owned place and pays about $25 for a cut. 45 for cut and color.
The most expesive place I know of around here charges about $60 for a cut, but I consider it more of a mini spa. Her price includes a glass of wine, hand massage and parafin treatment, facial and make-up application. I have no idea what she charges for color services.

I'm going to Atlanta in a few weeks. Is this a beauty school or something? If not, could you tell me where this salon is? I'd definitely like to take advantage of it. :thumbsup2

Generally speaking, astheticians and massage therapists make a considerably higher hourly wage than beauticians.

A good facial will take close to two hours, during which time the asthetician is only working on you. My hairdresser often jusggles two and three clients at a time.

I only get nasty when someone is acting nasty toward me. You seem to just come by it naturally.

Have I unknowingly entered a time machine and been transported back to junior high?

Geez...chill out.

DH and I were talking about this yesterday--I am going to a spa in a couple of weeks to have a bunch of things done.

Foil and cut=$110
Brow wax=$15
Underarm=$20
Brazilian=$60

So I am having $205 worth of services done so the standard tip would be about $30((15%)),a better tip would be about $40((20%))

BUT....

I feel I should tip more because someone has to look at my parts////am I being weird or do others feel this way also?

I wanted to add this from the spas website because the price for my foil/cut includes extras.

I tip on the service also, not the time taken. A more expensive service takes more time.

Not necessarily. Sometimes a more expensive service uses more expensive products, and or a technique that required additional training or certification.

I just can't justify paying that much money to someone when I can get the same quality service at a less expensive price. The time taken is pretty much the same anywhere you go.

BTW - I always get compliments on my hair & have sent many customers to my hairdresser that are still with her.
I actually followed my hairdresser from a higher priced salon to a chain, inexpensive hair shop. Her price went from $45 for a cut to $13. She doesn't have to take the time she did in the 'better' salon, usually 30 to 45 minutes, but she does, partly because I still tip her very well. I would say most people are done in 10 to 15 minutes usually in places like that.

My goodness - the owners must be seriously loaded, as they are obviously not paying their staff much out of these prices. :sad2:

sad but true. The 2.13 per hour is for restaraunt service workers. I am a massage therapist who works at a well known spa. We are paid more than 2.13 per hour, but not as much as most people think. Part of the reason spa owners pay a small percentage is because they count on their employees recieving tips.

I have been a server, and actually have made more money per hour doing that than as a Massage Therapist. Why? Because as a server you can turn over several tables in an hour. As a hair stylist/ facialist/ massage therapist, you are giving all your attention to one person for that allotted time.

I usually tip 15% for myself, because my hair stylist owns her own salon. I know you're not really "supposed" to tip an owner, but she deserves it.

I only get nasty when someone is acting nasty toward me. You seem to just come by it naturally.

You should step back and read some of your posts. I have nothing in this argument, but you really have been pretty nasty these past couple of days. I think you're taking things completely overboard.

No not a beauty school. It's in/near Cumming. Don't know the name of it, just know several people that go there. Then one friend decided to surprise one of the regulars with a gift certificate. Well she had sticker shock when she found out the price(as it is about 4x what she normally pays for a hair cut and was expecting it to be 25-30), but went ahead and bought it as a gift for the mutual friend anyway. She had already told the friend's fiancee that she was buying it, and was afraid he might have let the cat out of the bag.

Tipping over 25% is overly generous in most situations. When your appointment time was 4:00 and they don't start highlighting your hair until 4:49 it becomes insane. :)

I usually tip AT LEAST 20% (and occasionally a little bit over). I LOVE my stylist, and to tip her less would be tacky IMHO.

My last foil and cut was $68, and I tipped $7. She always seems happy with that. At Christmas, she runs a special of $35 for a cut and foil, but you are expected to tip $30 or $40. Hey, it's cheaper in the middle of nowhere to get this stuff done.

I feel I should tip more because someone has to look at my parts////am I being weird or do others feel this way also?

i had a bikini wax that cost 25$. i left 5$ tip. they see this stuff all the time, don't feel bad leaving what you think is appropriate. i mean, unless you are like sasquatch and it takes an hour to get rid of all the hair down there, it only took about 5 min for my wax.

and on the haircut front. my cut cost 30$ i leave between 5-6$ tip. i ask for my hair to be blow dried though, so i figure it's a little more work than just some snip snipping.

My cut and dry (no style, no color, no super trendy cut) is $50 and I leave $10 for a total of $60. And the guy who does my hair owns the salon so I guess I'm not supposed to tip him at all :confused3 But he is that good and super patient when I freak out because I see the amount of hair being cut (even if it isn't much).

Hmm I had my hair cut and half foiled last year at an Aveda Salon and with tip I spent $75.

I went back to this same salon and had a half hour massage and cut and with tip I spent $90.

I've never been a place that costs $60+ just for a haircut, because well I can't afford it. I don't go to those $10 hair cutting places since after three bad bad hair cuts that is just too cheap for me.

Not necessarily. Sometimes a more expensive service uses more expensive products, and or a technique that required additional training or certification.
I see what you're saying.

Please allow me to tell you a story. About four months ago I arrived at my appointment, and my stylist was running very late. She had overbooked her schedule to accomodate a long time client whose granddaughter had died of cancer the day before, and the client wanted her hair done for the funeral.

Frankly I didn't mind waiting considering the circumstances, and I hope that someday someone else will be patient about waiting if I ever put her in that situation.

Reading this thread, I am OVERJOYED my hairdresser comes to my house. Monday is her day off, and she does her home customers...:thumbsup2

Tomorrow I am getting a cut and highlights... 30$.....I tip 5$ or so..

I also serve lunch for her and her daughter..

I love it this way :thumbsup2

I pay $86 for a cut and color (no highlights) and tip $20.

If I add highlights as well the tip goes up, but never less than 20% of the service cost.

Anne

I am very low maintenance, in that I just get a cut. I color at home, but still, it's always around 20%. The guy who did my hair Friday pulled out all the stops, used a bunch of products and didn't charge for the blow dry (this place does). He got 25%.

My mom was one who went to the 'beauty parlor' every Friday so she could look great for work (waitress-the money nights were Fri-Sun) and my job was to bring the tip to the stylist and the shampoo girl.

For me, personally, the quality is not even close to the same. I can go to Cost Cutters and they will do a basic cut and I am done and out the door in 20 min. No wash which I personally like as it makes me feel a little pampered. And I have incredibly thick hair. When they just do their quick cut, I am left with chunky areas and areas that are too dense. I started going to a pricey salon in Feb. I am in love with it. The stylist thins out the areas of my hair that need it, she does a scalp massage with some hydrating stufff, she makes sure that my hair is exaclty right before I walk out the door. (I also get a foil and an all over color.) This costs me $145 and takes about two hours. I leave a $25 tip. I always get an appointment quickly. (Oh and this is an increased tip amount after I myself asked on the DIS boards too.)

I tip pretty well, generally - at least as compared to other DISers. But I tip the hairdresser VERY WELL. I mean, I can eat cold food or wait for the car if I have to...but I'm NOT playing games where my hair is concerned. :scared1:

I don't understand why you have to pay extra for "whole head" highlights, either. They don't charge extra to cut the hair on your WHOLE head, so why to highlight it? But, I pay them what they ask. Would never quibble with the stylist, as she might sic the Hair Gods on me. :scared:
