High School- Scholarships

Did you see if they have a payment plan? A number of schools have an outside that charges a set fee instead of interest. At my dd's school, it's maybe $70/semester or $90/year to set up monthly payments.

Yes, they did offer a 6/5/4 month payment plan for an extra $75 a semester. So $600 extra. We opted to just make the payments all at once. Hear me out to the end - we got the Citi Double Cash Back credit card which pays you 1% when you spend and 1% when you pay, so 2% on all purchases. We have at the moment about 80% of what we need to pay DD's 4 years of school. We will use the credit card for the semester payments, pay off the balance when they come in and in essence, get approximately $2000 cash back by the time we are done. (We made our own discount!) We may make DD get a loan for her final semester just to give her some of the responsibility, but we will see where we are 3 1/2 years from now.

Are you sure the school takes credit payments? Many do not.

Are you sure the school takes credit card payments without charging a convenience fee that is more than the cash back?

Yup, checked that all out already. People can even go on to her account and make payments for her - like grandparents, or whatever. Small school, 750 students.

DD has applied for local and national ones and they all have different deadlines. She has gotten one from our local rural electric cooperative, and one from her college's Foundation. It is a community college, so no big automatic merit awards, but the private colleges she was accepted to gave us her financial aid package in February or thereabouts with the merit awards.

Awards night at school is next Tuesday, and she applied to some local ones that I'm wondering if they just wait until awards night to tell you. Fingers crossed for a couple more. She felt like not many kids at school were applying.

Last year when my dd was a senior in high school we didn't find out about her scholarships until award night the middle of May. She got an invite to go so we knew she was getting something but not how much.

What does your daughter think about UMass Lowell? My daughter is seriously thinking about applying there in the fall.
My son is graduating from uml on Saturday with a criminal justice degree in homeland security. He loved it there as I did too.

That is nice. We just had the stuff mailed to the house.

Good luck! :flower:It's an exciting time. If you haven't already looked there is a book that lists almost every scholarship there is along with the deadlines and what you have to do and where to send it.

DD graduates in June. At the end of this month she has avid Award night and another night senior recognition so maybe then the school will announce if she got any. She has 3.9 gpa several AP classes but gets test anxiety so she doesn't do well on the AP exams. She has all A's except for AP stats she top 7% in her class. Two Private colleges offered her $25,000 academic achievement awards but not sure if her state college will offer anything.
Back when I started college in 2008 most people I knew did not get any form of scholarships from the CSU schools and you would have known by now if they were offering her any upfront as it would have been listed in the financial aid packet.

Nice that you can pay with credit card. I would use mine to earn cash rewards but DD's school charges 2.5% if card is used. At the end of this month I will have saved up 4 months of housing and 3 months of meal plan. luckily this school has monthly payment plan the other school she was thinking about I would have to pay by quarter

My daughter has two award night but not until the end of the month. One is for Avid award nights and the 2nd is senior award night. I look on dd's school site on her account and it shows a chevron scholarship I think it from when she played tennis but it doesn't have an amount

My DN is also graduating from UML Saturday with Biology and Nutrition degree's.

Both of my daughters didn't get their scholarship money they were awarded until after the first semester was completed. You've got to figure that in if there are any scholarship awards. Both got some grant money from their colleges too - that was a nice surprise!

Guessing some scholarships might start rolling in. DD received a letter in the mail yesterday saying she has been awarded a $500 Hudson Grange Memorial Scholarship. She will get it at their awards ceremony in June I guess. It said the check will have her name and the schools name. It will pay for some books! Good luck to everyone!!

Got an email tonight from California student aid commission saying that DD might be eligible for middle class income scholarship. We will be notified in July 2017. I also had her put in for two scholarship through my work/union and we will be notified med May. keeping fingers crossed. I'm really hoping she get both. One is for $500 and 2nd is for $1500

dd is entering her senior year in college (state university). our experience w/ applications in high school were that privately administered scholarships generally notified in mid to late may, those administered through the university let incoming freshman know in late april (notified along with their financial aid award letter-at dd's state school it's one master application for both financial aid and all university administered scholarships/in subsequent years we haven't learned what the financial aid/scholarship picture is until late may or early june) BUT there was a second round of notifications in mid june for those that had been awarded to other students who opted to attend other schools (so a student could be second in line for a scholarship and not be aware of it unless it becomes available). those dd's high school administered (school's foundation, teacher's association, individual departments...) weren't announced until graduation (there were dual tears of joy when some of us parents learned as our kids were handed their diplomas that they had been awarded scholarships.

if your dd is awarded any scholarships from non university sources-a tip: find out if the scholarship is renewable year to year. most will let you know this when it's initialy awarded, with a couple dd received it wasn't stated in the materials and if we hadn't made an inquiry to find out if she could reapply we wouldn't have known it was just available to her for the asking (with a verification of continued attendance at the university).

Didn't you already get a financial aid letter or package from the college your daughter is going to attend? I know you said you don't qualify for aid, but it should still spell out your loan options. I can't imagine they think you are going to wait till September to find out what is what with. I am not sure about scholarship award notifications. I hope your daughter is able to receive something extra :).

Also, check to see if you have to pay taxes for receiving a certain type of scholarship.
