I would think the Denali would be a good weight jacket for {almost all of} a southern winter, but it definitely did not cut the mustard in my super windy super cold northern Minnesota winters!

I ended up with one of their down jackets for winter and a Columbia fleece jacket for fall/spring. The Columbia fleece was better than the Denali for indoors (I tended to overheat in the Denali indoors), so I sold my Denali and stuck with that.

Just wondering if anyone knows anything about the Khumbu style TNF jacket? I've asked for it as a Christmas gift, but i'm worried it would be too warm for my needs. I live in Tucson, AZ so it rarely gets cold enough to wear a traditional "winter coat", but I am often wearing hoodies and lighter jackets. I just want something that looks a little nicer. I'm from MI and travel back a lot, so i'd need it for there too, plus i'm going to Tulsa this Christmas and don't know what kind of weather to expect for that.

I've had my Denali since 06 and it still looks good as new, so it was definitely worth the cost. I do wear it most of the winter, but I've found that cold wind cuts through the fleece sleeves. Requires layers during really cold weather.

They sell 3-in-1 North Face jackets that have a water proof outer jacket with a zip in fleece jacket that can also be worn alone. My daughter has one of these and she loves it. We bought hers at backcountry.com.

I have 2 of the 3 in 1's and love them!! I couldn't choose a color so got both. The outer shell is totally waterproof. One of my inner shells is a fleece, the other jacket
has a
quilted pattern.

Also look at Marmont, Patagonia, and Mountain Hardwear. I would suggest going an outdoor retailer and trying on jackets.

This is one area where spending the $ will pay off in the long run. A high quality jacket will last a very long time. Now, I scored a awsome Marmont Gravity soft shell at Dicks 2 springs ago for about $30 that was originally $150. So, if you can make it thru this winter with what you have, you never know what you will find on the clearance racks.

Also, you realy want to try on some of the higher end jackets because many of them are more slender European / active life style cut. TNF has adapted more to the fuller American stomachs in their mainstream line, but their active lines still have the slender cut. Columbia is defiantly cut for Americans. If I get a Larger for the sleeve length, I have a lot of extra fabric left in the chest area.

Khumbu is a TKA 300 weight fleece. Insulated without the bulk of layering. 300 is the highest weight fleece, makes it denser for wind resistancy but not waterproof. It is zip in compatible with other TNF products. Is fleece jacket looking. You might want to look at the Apex Bionic Jacket for 149.00. This is softshell (soft/stretchy) jacket that is climateblocking apex fabric and windproof. It is a little more stylish and great colors available. It looks more like a jacket than fleece. The Weimaraner Herringbone print is awsome.
