Hello Everybody,

I want to plan a cruise for next year for just the two of us. I have never done a Disney Cruise. In fact, neither one of us have been on a cruise at all. So, I would love recommendations on which ship to choose and where to go, what time of year? Anything you can throw at me. I am trying to decide if we go to Aulani or go on a cruise. P.S. neither one of us has been to Hawaii either.

TIA!

How long do you want your vacation to be?
That is another question. Since we have never been I am not sure what the perfect length would be. I know I was interested in going on the Wish but, was wondering others experiences on their cruises? Maybe 4 nights at least.

Cruises are good for a lot of things....not going to be able to list it all.
If there is a group of places you've not been (like Hawaii) a cruise is great to get just a taste of it all. Maybe see if it's a place you'd go to for a whole week, but not commit yet.
Also, you see a number of places without you, personally, moving around. Your stuff stays put. Whether you like to relax or be active, cruise ships have it all. What line and where you go depends on you.

Every cruise line has it's target audience. Disney is a good bet if you're already a fan. Then, where you want to go can depend on...do you want to fly or drive to port? Do you want to see somewhere specific (beach? Mountains? Fall foliage?) Or is the ship and departure port more important than the destination?

So many things to factor in. I book all of my own travel but it might be worth talking to an agent or AAA to get a feel for where your priorities are when it comes to which is THE biggest factor.

As a general rule:
-Choose a cabin type you'll be able to live with (inside gives you zero sense of time of day)
-pick a deck/cabin that is NOT just below a public place
-get travel insurance (especially now)

And enjoy your first cruise 😁

Somewhere around 3000-4000
I'm not trying to be a downer but I think you're probably looking at a short cruise. For an inside cabin, two people...you figure you'll want money to spend on things like excursions...
We dont drink, but drinks are extra (soda or alcohol on most cruise lines. DCL I think includes soda?), plus if you go ashore nothing there is included.
Check around...see where you can cruise out of that's within driving distance so you don't need to fly.

You still don't know enough to ask specific questions. Talk to a travel agent who specializes in cruises and let them figure out if you want to go to a Hawaii resort or a cruise. If you decide on a DCL cruise, then we can answer more detailed questions. "What is the best......." is so subjective, especially without knowing all of the variables. This is the perfect example of when a travel agent can shine by helping walk through your thought process and narrowing down your options as you talk to them.

While you are waiting for your travel agent visit, I’ll throw in some info. Sort of the point of forums.

Washington state or DC?

DCL or Aulani are both expensive. I’ve sailed lots, been to Hawaii numerous times, including very short stays at Aulani. And airfare has jumped considerably this year.

Sailings on the Wish have a price drop mid-late April 2023. Probably after most Spring Breaks and Easter. They are sailing from Port Canaveral and are doing 3- or 4-night cruises. The destination is Nassau and Castaway Cay, Disney’s private Bahamian island (4-night adds a day at Sea).

Starting prices for interior cabins are around $2500. Balconies $3000+ Oceanview (window, no balcony) are in between those prices. That is total fare for two people, including port taxes.

That uses up most of your budget. Add gratuities of about $13.50 pp/day ($108; think of it as a service charge you would see on a restaurant bill in Europe. It is the real income of the various wait staff, room stewards.)

Summer prices are closer to $4000/$5000 for the same rooms and itinerary. Rates drop again as Hurricane season builds and kids go back to school. September travel can bring lower prices while still offering warmer ocean temps, but can have ruined travel plans if a storm rolls in.

All meals and soda are included. Alcohol is basically a pay-as-you-go situation. DCL does not offer an unlimited drinks package as other cruise lines do.

(Option) As a first time cruiser, on a new ship, you may not be able to get into one of the speciality (extra $) restaurants, as passengers with cruising loyalty to DCL get Priority in booking. Those can be $45-125 pp for brunch or dinner.

Castaway Cay is basically two private beaches on one island which can be done for no out of pocket costs. Loungers and umbrellas are free and plentiful. Lunch is served on the island.

Internet is expensive inboard. Perhaps not so great, either. (I just use the tiny free amount you can sign up for on boarding day).

When Covid passes and things return to normal, there should be several excellent Broadway-quality Disney shows during your cruise. This is where DCL shines (My, and many others’ opinion).

I have focused on the Wish, and hence, its destination of the Bahamas. Other ships are sailing from Miami, Galveston, New Orleans, San Diego.

As a first-time cruiser, I can see wanting to try the new ship and go to Castaway Cay. It is doable, but it’s a tight stretch, budget-wise; especially if you can get a good airfare deal.

Aulani. Four nights, lowest price room. Shoulder season, Mon-Fri, May 15-19, 2023. $2500 + $400 tax = $2900 (I think that’s rounded down to nearest $100.)

Coming from Washington state, you can possibly get decent pricing on Alaska Airlines, maybe Hawaiian Or Southwest (I don’t fly that routing, so. It sure). But non-stop should be 5-6 hours?

Aulani is on the Leeward (western) side of Oahu. Not as conveniently located to tourist activities as staying in Waikiki. The property is beachfront, with a protected bay. The pool area has a nice water play area (not just for little kids).

The above price is room only. If you rent a car, there’s daily parking fees (it may be $60/day). Cars and gas are more expensive than mainland. That said, pretty much everything is more expensive.

Dining prices at Aulani remind me of Disney parks, but with few options of restaurants. There are a few places to get food across the road. Kapolei is a growing community nearby (a few miles) with more reasonably priced options.

When I said my visits to Aulani have been about 2 nights, it is because I do not use it as a base for visiting Oahu and it’s sites. I go to Aulani and stay there and then go to Waikiki to use as a jumping-off place at half the price. (Same principal at WDW - if I am paying Deluxe Resort prices, I don’t do a park day; I utilize that $300-500+ hotel cost by enjoying the better pools, decor…)

The Pacific Ocean surrounding Hawaii is cold. But it is beautiful.

If you can do both a cruise and a trip to Hawaii in your lifetime, consider yourself blessed. I know I do.

I’m packing right now for a Disney that leaves on Monday.

You have lots of fun planning in store. Bon Voyage - or E Komo Mai.

To clarify that was the cost of the cruise alone. Not flights or excursions.Im not on a certain budget. I guess I'm just wanting suggestions from others on what cruises they think we would like. Money is an after thought. We can afford more.

I would start with a four night. The reason I would do this is just in case you find out you don’t like cruising or you’re prone to sea sickness. A seven night would be miserable if you find out you feel seasick. The Wish is going to be sailing out of Port Canaveral which is honestly the easiest disney port in my opinion to sail from. Fly into Orlando take the Disney transportation over.

Summer is the most expensive and unless you have to go then I would avoid it. Personally I like early spring February March. In the fall you risk hurricanes and if you sail in the early part of winter sometimes there’s issues with docking a Castaway as well as the water can be kind of cold.

In my opinion it’s always worth the money to get a veranda room but that’s really up to you. I recommend using a dream‘s unlimited travel agent as they are wonderful and you will get a shipboard credit. Mine is Joy Ferson and she is amazing

our 1st cruise was a 7 night and never regretted opting for the 7 night instead of a 3 or 4. More places to see on a longer cruise , more relaxation days, slower paced. We have cruised twice on the magic twice on the Fantasy and last cruise was our 1st 4 night on the Dream, I still prefer the 7 night cruises that being said we have booked a 4 night on the Wish for April 2023.Dollar for dollar 7 night is my vote! Oh and Veranda stateroom all the way! We love very back aft1

Gotcha. That makes a big difference, but cruising hasn't gotten any cheaper. I would start with a short one and see how you feel about it... I don't have sea legs. I get seasick every time (I use a Rx patch). But I wouldn't have it any other way 😁

I see you said you’re not on a specific budget but don’t forget that the suggested tips are not included. My wife and I took our first cruise and found out the hard way. Google Disney cruise tip calculator to get an idea of what will be added to your room.

As to where…any 7 day Caribbean. Enough time to relax and see different islands.
