Does anyone know where I can find a heating pad that does not have the automatic shut off function. I went to three different stores today to find one and every one of them automatically shuts off after 60 minutes. I need one that I can turn on, leave on...until I turn it off. It's for a ferral cat that is basically freezing outside. I made him an outdoor shelter in the far corner of our yard, that I put a heating pad in and he uses it everyday. But he now likes the ability to look in our wall of windows and watch what we are doing in the evenings. We leave the screened in patio door open for him and we put a big blanket and wind screening out there for him, but there is no heat. I have put my hand in his outdoor shelter to make sure his heating pad is working, and it's nice and warm in there for him. But, he really likes sleeping in the chair on the patio. I think he thinks he's a dog, he follows my dogs everywhere in the yard. Today, I made him another shelter box for the patio, with the opening pointing right into our house for him to watch the goings on. Then, went to the store to get the heating pad and couldn't find one that stays on for more than sixty minutes.

So, does anyone know where I can find a heating pad that won't shut off on it's own. It sort of defeats the purpose of keeping him warm overnight if it shuts off after an hour. I've been to Walmart, Meijer, and a small local drug store. Any other places I should look. Also, has anyone purchased one recently that doesn't shut itself off, and where did you get it. Thanks all. Also, I know about canine outdoor heated bedding, but that is really way too expensive.

F.Y.I. This cat was caught, neutered and given all shots last January and adopted by a neighbor, that lives one street behind me. I don't know her at all, she just offered to adopt the cat if it was captured last January, when he was out in the elements. He stayed in her house all last winter but he slipped out in late June...and has not left my backyard since that time. I wish she'd come get him, but she doesn't and my city won't come get cats. They say cats that run loose often belong to someone, so they don't pick them up. So, all I can do is try to keep him warm and make sure he doesn't starve. He is quite a little hunter...it's so gross, but he's really good at it.

Thanks all.

Try walgreens, I purchased one last year that does not automatically turn off. I want to say it was $15.

what about goodwill or something like that? The one I have is older.

We have a heated cat bed. More money, but it is circular with sides that come up (about 6 inches) which really adds to the warmth for a cat who is curled up to sleep in it.

We have one that one shut off as well. I also used it for my kitty to keep her warm when she was older. It helped with the aches and pains. I got it at Walgreens.

We use a pet bed warmer, it is OK for outside use and won't burn the animal. It actually warms up when the animal lays on it. Here is something similar to what we have from tractor supply. We used it all winter for our outdoor cats who sleep in a dog house in the garage and it also has a chew proof cord.

Good Luck. I always worry about our animals outside in the cold weather.

Just wanted to say "thanks" to OP and tinkarooni for taking care of outdoor/ feral kitties. They are truly blessed to have ended up with you all.

Have you tried petsmart or petco for bed warmers? I swear i have seen them on thier websites. I doesn't get cold enough to need them here for more than a few days in the winter so they don't stock them here.

I also wanted to say thank you for taking care of this poor cat. He must be attached to you to keep returning and wanting to see what you all are doing.

We had two feral cats years ago, one ended up living inside with us for a couple of years until he died. When they were outside we insulated one of the plastic dog houses (shaped like a house) with an egg crate mattress, put a floor pillow in there, and a wool blanket. Even when it was freezing outside they were warm. I don't know if one of them could have stayed warm alone but with the two of them they were cozy.

Good luck.

OP here...thanks....we have 2 of these ferral cats already as house cats now. One we took in about five years ago and the other about three years ago. I've never had a cat in my life, but I must say they are the sweetest, most well behaved cats I've ever encountered. They never get into anything, don't go on the counters, have never hissed or swated at anyone or anything. The one that is outside is super sweet too. He follows us around the yard, plays chase with us and the dogs, comes when he's called, etc. It's hard for me to just leave him out there, but you know how that goes when you're now their owner...what can ya do.:confused3

Heating pads are not for outdoor use, please check at the pet store for something appropriate that won't electrocute the poor kitty.

The heating pad would not be out in the weather elements. It's a completely enclosed porch (25x18) that just is not heated. The cat will not be electrocuted in there.
