I bought a Sony a6000 so I could take awesome pictures on our recent trip. It was our first time staying on property and stayed at the Poly. It was a once in a lifetime vacation.

On our 5th day (of a 6 day vaca) my camera suddenly said that is could not read the card and to re-insert the card. This happened about 10 minutes after I had been using it last. I did this several times along with turning the camera off and taking out the battery to "re-set it. I kept receiving the same message.

I put a new card in after we got home and it works fine so far.

My computer doesn't even acknowledge that the card is in. Other devices that do read the card say that it's blank. :guilty:

One thing that I didn't do that I now know I should have is to have formatted the original card prior to using it. Could that have caused by my problems?

Is there any way of recovering what's on the card? I'm so upset that that only pictures I have are the ones that I took from my i-phone, and those are only of the last day and a half! I had taken hundreds of pictures and they're all gone. :sad1:

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

First, make sure you didn't lock your SD card by moving the small tab on the side of the card.

If that's not the problem I would take the card to a camera shop - they should with any luck be able to recover the files.

I feel your pain :sad1:. During DGD's first trip to DW, DH had tons of video...priceless to us. After the last Electric Parade on day 5 he put the camera down...moved about 3 feet to his right to take a picture of me. When he finished he moved to get his camera and it was gone. There was a couple sitting a few feet away, whispering  and we approached them to ask if they'd seen anyone pick the camera up...well, you can probably guess they didn't. :rolleyes1 We didn't want to accuse them of anything but it was pretty obvious the "large lump" inside one of the Disney World shopping bags was a video camera :confused3. I'm sorry your dream vacation ended this way; hopefully fractal's advise will help. :tink:

Oh no... I hope u are able to recover your photos.
But try and remember that All your wonderful memories will be in your head forever!
Let us all know how you make out with this. Best of luck!

they're probably still on the card, try using a recovery program. it's been a while since I've used recovery software

What brand is the card? What size is it and where did you buy it from? If you don't want to answer, that's fine. I understand. Lots of bogus cards out there being sold as large cards that are faked out to look like it but they crash when they finally fill up because most are 2 and 4 gig cards in reality. It is a common scam, especially on Amazon.

Thanks for the replies. My next step is to try a recovery program.

Yikes! I had no idea that this happened. Yes, I got the card from Amazon. >:(

I've bought cards from a variety of sources, and oddly enough the only one I had fail was one that came in original SanDisk packaging directly from B&H.

Good luck OP!

Sorry. I was on my iPad last night and couldn't really type efficiently. LOL

Unfortunately, this is a common scam, especially on Amazon (and eBay for that matter) where there is very little control of the real sellers.

They alter the allocation tables on these smaller cards and make them appear to be larger than they are. Unfortunately, most times, when these cards fill up they essentially crash out and are virtually unrecoverable because the allocation tables (think of this as the filing system that keeps up with where everything is) were never legitimate to begin with.

I'm not saying this is what happened, but that's why I asked the brand and what you paid. If you got a "great deal" that sounded too good to be true on a large card, unfortunately, it probably was.

I buy ALL my memory cards (and I have probably accumulated a hundred over the years) from Best Buy. I've never gotten a bogus one but at least I have somebody who's neck i can put my hands around.

Whenever I pull a card out of its packaging, the first thing I do is check it in disk manager in my computer and then reformat it. Then I KNOW what I've got. Memories on my cards are too important to risk.

I sincerely hope this isn't what happened to you. I'm just throwing it out there because people need to know and because, unfortunately and given that you got it from Amazon; it is a very real possibility.

Buyer beware. If the price seems too goo to be true, it probably is. :(

I'm naturally curious what you may have found. If you could report back with a conclusion when you have one, I'd really like to see it. Thanks!

Any kind of follow-up, OP? Just curious what you found. It's really nice to put closure to these things for when other people search in the future.

I've had no luck. I've tried the card in several computers and nothing reads it. It's like it's not even there. Obviously I can't use any of the recovery software because the computer doesn't recognize the card. I contacted a recovery service and they gave me a ball park estimate of about $500 for a "non-evasive recovery" and much higher if additional steps are needed. They will give a free estimate, so I would just have to pay to ship the card to/from them, then they will give me a firm price for the recovery. I'm still debating if I want to spend that much money.

Would you consider trying something for me?

Place the card in a reader on your computer (PC, I assume?). If you're running Windows 10, type "Computer Management" into Cortana and run that app for me. Click on Disk Management over on the right and then scroll through the right column and tell me if you see it in there anywhere. If you do, click it and tell me what all the columns say, please. Make sure you post all of them. You may have to scroll right.

Also, is your card reader built-in or does it plug in USB?

Thanks!

Yes, I've tried this. It doesn't read anything ("no media").

I have tried both the built in reader and USB.

Thanks, anyway!
