Healthy Living around the World Showcase ~ June 2016 WISH Challenge!

QOTD for June 20:

We are moving on to the UK today and this country's favourite drink: Tea! There is a lovely tea shop as part of the UK pavilion at Epcot. Tea is a great drink as it gives you flavour without calories! And fluids are important for healthy living!

So, how are you doing in the fluids field? Are you getting your healthy portion of unsweetened drinks? Do you enjoy tea or do you have other preferences? Any strategy for making sure that you drink enough during the day?

I'm SURE I didn't drink enough water this weekend.... it was hot and sunny and I worked outside for hours both days. Yesterday every time I went in I was absolutely beyond thirsty.... cotton-mouth to the extreme. I know that means I should have stopped more often. But on a REGULAR basis I do pretty well with water (plain, fruit-infused, and bubbly). I do like tea of many varieties, hot and cold with some stevia or a half/half tea and stevia-sweetened lemonade (mostly in the summer). Mostly I stick with green tea or black tea, but I'm willing to venture out when the opportunity arises!

It is easy to have a water goal on work days because I bring the same water bottle every day and I have a goal to finish it before I leave for the day. At home I get a little out of that habit, but I've started using my water bottle at home as well, to try and keep a better handle on drinking more water.

Good morning friends! Sorry I wasn't more chatty this weekend. I'm in full-blown PANIC mode over the fact that DS's graduation party is THIS SATURDAY and the house and yard are in a sorry state. I cannot do it ALL in the next 5 days and I know that, so I am trying to prioritize some things and just LET IT GO!! But I'm very type A about things like this and I will have a hard time with that. DH and I are both planning to take off Wed, Thurs, and Fri and I anticipate working 14-16 hours each day. But it will be worth it if I can feel a bit better about the state of affairs here AND if DS loves/enjoys his party. I busted it pretty hard this weekend and I am feeling a bit better about things... planted flowers in four places, edged and mulched a few beds that have been neglected lately, installed a few paving stones where the grass was worn down, scrubbed all the patio furniture, fresh sheets on all the beds, weeded, weeded, and weeded, tied up the tomatoes, installed new split rails on the fence in front of the house (they were warped and splitting), cleaned the bird poo from the deck, scrubbed the hot tub cover (yucky pollen), weeded, weeded, and weeded.

But speaking of work.... I am scheduled for today at school (summer maintenance job started last Thursday) and tonight for a 24/7 chat shift, so I must dash! Hoping I'll have time to chat between calls tonight.............P

I am horrible getting fluids of any kind in my. I don't like tea but just found one this winter that I like. It is sugar cookies flavor. Still no calories. I do drink pop but not much. I drink maybe 10 oz a day. This maybe my goal one month.

I can't wait until Wednesday to tell my woohoo for this week. Cleveland finally won a championship. I can not express the feelings I have. We have not won a championship for 52 years. I never thought it would happen in my life time. On top of the Cavs win the Indians are in first place and have been for awhile. The energy around cleveland is awesome. I only got maybe 3 hours of sleep and forgot my dentist appointment this morning. It is going to be a great week.

I do better with drinking water when I am at work - I use a drink bottle. I do enjoy my soft drink so work days I have less of this - although I did pretty good this past weekend with not as much of it consumed as usual. I don't mind tea - but like it sweet - I tend to only drink it occasionally during winter. I just can't do hot drinks when its hot. Although maybe I should try some iced tea one day.

I'm a big water drinker - other than coffee, water is 99% of what I drink. I do drink tea sometimes, mostly when it's cold or I'm sick (although at my old job I used to go to the coffee shop for iced tea on my way home fairly often). But mostly I stick to water.
I have a 32 oz water bottle that I keep with me most of the time (although when I go shopping, I take a 0.5 L disposable bottle instead). I'm usually pretty good at getting in the water, but sometimes when I drink too much water it hurts my throat, so sometimes I'll start off great and then not be able to get up to my 8 cups because my throat hurts too much. I definitely need to get better at spacing out my water drinking.

I was much better at drinking water when I was at work, but at home for the summer I'm slipping a bit. I don't do tea at all. I still drink diet sodas every now and then for a treat - heading to the movies in a little bit and I'll get a big soda instead of any candy/popcorn. I also do flavored seltzer every now and then, which is also more of a treat than anything else.

Half Marathon #8 went awesomely yesterday in Seattle - ended up with a 3:14 finish time, my second fastest to date. The weather held off fairly well, with only a light drizzle off and on. At mile 10 we had to go through a tunnel and my claustrophobia kicked in because it was a dark, tight space. You could literally see the light at the end of the tunnel but i was freaking out because no matter how much I moved it felt like I wasn't getting any closer to it! :rotfl: I think if the tunnel weren't scaring me so much I'd have had a 3:10 finish time. Oh well - onwards to Chicago next month!
I was driving east on I90 as runners were still out on the bridge. Congrats on your time!

I probably drink too much water as there is always water bottle, or tea & coffee on my desk. May be little less weekends. I drink a lot after workout too. I like sparkling water a lot.

I bought 2 new swim suits when I was away and 1 and half (just a top to go with bikini I have bottoms to mix and match) today! I will have 3.5 new bikinis for my October Orlando holiday. Too many! One of my secret motivators was a picture from Caribbean beach resort where we will be staying and imaging me with looking fit at the hammock! Now all I can think is staying away due to tiny gators walking around :(. Not that fun really I need to get over that

Probably inspired by the new gym I am feeling ready to go in weight loss mode and tackle the vanity 5kg. I will give myself 1 kg goal by the end of the month. Enjoyed 3 weeks focusing on maintenance, holiday was fun. Calories were down last week but so were activities levels. I would like to see my weight starting to move downwards again

Still little undecided about the gym, today is the last free trail day and I will check out the swimming pool & sauna area and I will make my mind up after that. It's awesome but being used to cheap subsidised gym and having to sign one year contract on much higher cost is hard to get over.

Once again a timely question. My biggest hang up to getting back on track right now is drinking a chai almost everyday and slipping back in to ordering Arnold Palmers with my meals. If I can cut just those two things out it will make a huge difference. Other than that I'm much better at getting my water during the work week than I am on weekends. For instance yesterday I had three Arnold's at lunch, then my 30 oz glass of water with calcium magnesium in it during the evening, but I don't believe I had any other water during the day.

So this week I am focussing on what I'm drinking, didn't make it past Starbucks this morning so I'm not off to a great start but it will get better.

This is one area where I definitely need to improve. I don't drink enough fluids and then I wonder what happened when I get exhaustion.

I usually start the day with a Diet Mt Dew and then transition to water (maybe) in the afternoon. In the evening I drink the Pierrier cans - so it feels like I am having a soda.

Old habits are hard to break. Probably need to start making some new ones.

Hello everyone-- I feel like I've been super MIA recently. DH and I are dog-sitting at a friends house and I'm just worn out ALL the time. There are 4 of them, they aren't house trained, and bark during the night. I am in full on zombie mode right now. My weight loss is suffering too. Even though my eating has been seriously on point, being sleep deprived is not helping at all. I have learned that I definitely need sleep to keep the scale moving. :(

So I'm down to 20% this week.

QOTD: Silver lining for staying at said friends house-- she has one of those fancy near boiling faucets so I have been having tea multiple times a day! I realized I really do like it, I am just too lazy to make it at home Haha! Normally, I just have a lot of water throughout the day thanks to the big RO water cooler at our store. If I could be as consistent about eating and working out as I am about my water intake, I would be set!

I really need to improve on my water. I have been drinking a lot of tea in the last couple of weeks. I like a tea with milk in the morning after breakfast. It helps me not to snack as much. I am on a herbal kick now. I have one called Passion and it has hibiscus in it which is supposed to help bring down blood pressure. I also like to start the day the day with a glass of water with lemon in it. And in the evening if my stomach is upset I will have water with apple cider vinegar, honey and ginger. It really has helped me stay away from tuns.

It has been a pretty quiet day. I just finished the squares for a quilt I am working on, just going down to press them and then I can put the top together. Pork chops have been defrosted and I just need to make stuffing and some veggie.

Dh has been dozing on and off. On our trip to Wichita he had a spell of vertigo. Since then he has felt off so he went to the doctor and he has an ear infection. The second one in three months. But to help the vertigo he is taking sea sick medication which is making him sleepy. The last couple of days we have been at parties and he was able to stay awake because he was talking to people but today it is just me and the dog so he has been taking it easy and dozing off and on. I am hoping this clears up soon.

Have a happy and healthy day

PS Pamela, Happy belated birthday

I love that tea shop!

Pamela happy belated birthday! I feel your grad party stress, time for a to-do list for your son maybe!? Just remember you are your worst critic, everyone will have a great time and nobody will notice a weed

Courtneybeth - great job on your half!

Mamaattorney -enjoy you trip and you look fantastic in your pic! Great job!

Lots of kudos to everyone here seems like June is become a very successful month! Just a quick reading check in before I'm off to the gym and then an outside day at my friends lake house. I'm continuing to do well on getting the workouts in, not so well on my food journaling goals and the scale hasn't budged for it

Good morning and happy Tuesday to everyone! It's starting to cool down in Southern California after our threepeat of 100+ degree weather. We're only going to be at a high of 85 today - so that makes me feel much better.

It's been good practice for me on increasing my fluids ;)

Question of the Day for June 21st:

We are still in the UK today and are moving from the tea shop to the Rose and Crown Pub. While this has a restaurant portion, it also holds up the tradition of British public houses and has a lovely old fashioned bar:

Rose-and-Crown-Bar.jpg

So, let's talk adult drinks today! While alcohol may have a number of not so healthy effects, it also has something very weight loss related: calories! So, how do you deal with alcohol while trying to lose weight? None at all, a little on occasion? What drinks are harder to resist then others? Have you found any satisfying substitutes for adult drinks?

The Rose and Crown is such a cute restaurant :lovestruc

As for the drinking -- I'm not much of a drinker so it wasn't hard to pretty much quit this. However I had my first alcoholic drink of the year at my Grad Dinner and let me tell you... LIGHTWEIGHT AHOY. I was having a ~great~ time after one drink and was so happy. :P

I guess giving up something that isn't a big part of your diet isn't too difficult. If you asked me to give up Ice Cream 100%, I'd come after you with a spoon!

My drinking has gone down a lot since I started the diet. I wasn't a huge drinker to begin with, maybe 4-6 beers a week during football season and 2-3 a week during the offseason. I would say I might have two a month now. It's just not worth the extra calories right now for me.

We do have a couple of vacations coming up which will test my willpower. We are doing a long weekend next weekend in Cleveland. Going to hit Cedar Point one day, the Rock and Roll HOF one day, and the Pro Football HOF the last day on our way back. I might have a drink or two at the House of Blues for dinner Saturday night, but it shouldn't be bad calorie wise.

At the end of July we are going down to Orange Beach for a week. This will be tough. Beach = beers!!! I'm going to do my best not to gain that week, but I'm also going to enjoy myself too. We'll see what happens.

It's been a tough couple days. I haven't been able to run for the past few days due to a non running injury and it's driving me crazy. I can't really do anything physical which stinks. I'm actually doing better today, so I'm hoping maybe tonight or tomorrow I can get at it again. It's nothing that I can injure more or anything, it's just a pain tolerance thing. At least the scale hasn't gone up which I guess is a good thing!

Hey guys!
It's been a weird few weeks for me. Nothing too major going on, just a few small things, and I haven't been great about tracking my food or making good food choices. I'm trying to do better, but with a few other small things I have going on, it's hard to stay focused.

I'm really not a big drinker. I'll have the occasional drink, but it's so infrequent that I just consider it a treat and don't worry about it.
