Hatfields and McCoys

I had been waiting for it to start as well. It was supposed to be a surprise for DH, but he saw the commercial yesterday afternoon :sad2:

I really wanted to see it, but for such an American title, they should have filmed it in the South and not in Translyvania or wherever they filmed it for the cost breaks. Too many people here are out of work.

(Sorry, this really bothers me.)

Did you like it? Was Kevin Costner okay?

What did you think of last night's show?
I liked it but because DH was sleeping I kept the volume down and couldn't hear it very well. I also came in toward the end but then watched the encore presentation so I watched it in reverse.

Basically I'd like to see the first episode again and am looking forward to the others. :goodvibes

I found it when I was flipping channels so didn't know about it before.

I'm watching. I thought it started out a little slow so I was hoping it would get better and it did! Can't wait to watch tonight's episode. About halfway through though I had to turn on the closed captioning because I was having a hard time understanding them at times.

I watched most of the first episode last night and thought it was pretty good.

You too? Thought we were the only ones. Glad it's not age-related, which is what we were beginning to think :rolleyes1

I also thought it started out slow, though I figured after the pig incident things would start heating up. Then when the Hatfield boy fell in love with the McCoy daughter - WOW did things really intensify!

We are, or at least we are taping it to DVR. Saw most of last night, but the last 30 minutes or so. Started it late and just couldn't make it till the end. :rotfl: We will watch the rest of part 1 tonight and start in on part 2.

So, how accurate is this? Did Cap really desert in the middle of the war? If that is true, I can't blame Randolph for being angry with him. He was messed up when he got back and to see Cap prospering, would have burned me up also.

I find I do that more often. Not sure if it's the accents or low tones or what. :confused3 Are you from NH by any chance?

Nope - Cincinnati, Ohio :teeth:

DH really found the drunk guy hard to comprehend - he kept calling him "mush mouth".

I thought it moved very slow and really dragged in parts. BUT I was really glad they didn't sanitize it or PC it up and showed the violence, and actions and beliefs the way it was.

Also liked that they weren't all cleaned up and pristine like the actors on Little House on the Prairie, or Bonanza used to be!! These folks were dirty and their clothes were dirty and faded and worn.

The sound issue could be that it was mixed poorly OR that they are broadcasting an interesting fold down of the mix.

No I think it was the accents. Like the clothes they aren't sanitizing the speaking or the accents, they really sound like they are from the Appalachians/West Virginia hills.

My DH has the TV loud and I could hear the volume fine but had to really listen to understand the accents.

Sort of accurate. The Hatfields lived in what would become West Virginia. They fought for the Confederacy. The McCoys lived in a neighboring county in Kentucky. They fought for the Union. Asa Harmon McCoy was killed when he returned home after fighting for the Union army. Asa McCoy came home early because he had a broken leg. He was killed by confederate homeguard. At first, they blamed Anse Hatfield, but later confirmed that he was not involved. It is believed that his uncle, Jim Vance, committed the murder.

The second incident didn't occur until 13 years later. That was the hog incident. The real tension developed when Roseanna McCoy and Johnson Hatfield fell in love. She did stay with the Hatfields for awhile, but returned home. When they tried to get together again, Johnson Hatfield was arrested by the McCoys on a bootlegging charge. Roseanna did make a late night ride to get Johnson's father to rescue him. Johnson ended up abandoning the pregnant Roseanna and married her cousin, Nancy McCoy, instead.

It really escalated when Ellison Hatfield, brother of Devil Anse Hatfield, was killed by three of Roseanna's brothers. The brothers were eventually murdered, as well.

In 1888, members of the Hatfield family surrounded the McCoy cabin and opened fire on the sleeping family. The cabin was set on fire. Randolph McCoy made it out, but not all of his children did. He was wife was beaten and left for dead.

Further violence occurred over the next few years. Eventually, state militia were sent in to restore peace. In the end, some of the Hatfields stood trial for the McCoy cabin massacre. Some were imprisoned and others hanged.

The location really bothered me too. I saw Costner interviewed. He said they wanted to shoot in W.VA or Kentucky but ended up in Romania and Transylvania-no explanation. I thought WTH at that point. I've recorded it but I'm gonna wait til my son is out of school so we can all watch.

Yeah, I read all of that also, on wikipedia, right? Or somewhere. All though I did read somewhere else that there was lot of intermarriage with them and that Roseanna and Johnson weren't the first ones to do that. Remember the drunk that stood up for the Hatfields in court when they were there for the pig case? He was related to both sides. I believe he was a nephew of Randolph McCoy, making the boys that killed him his cousins.

Can't find anything about the desertion part though.

No. My info came from a book I read, "Blood Feud" by Lisa Alther. According to her book, Asa McCoy was released early. There was nothing about a desertion. If you're intrested in the subject, I recommend this book. Very interesting.
