Has anyone heard of "pocking" Easter Eggs?

My grandmother is 100% pure Cajun French, and ever since she can remember, her family "pocked" eggs at Easter time. So, ever since *I* can remember, we've pocked at her house every Easter.

The whole family does this: kids, grandparents, aunts, cousins, etc. Everyone starts out with about a dozen or so colored eggs in their baskets. Then we all go around and "pock" each other's eggs: one person is the pocker, one is the pockee. The pockee holds his/her egg, small end facing up. The pocker gently taps the small end of his egg against the small end of the pockee's egg. The person who's egg breaks first has to give up his egg to the person with the uncracked egg.

This goes on until there is one egg left...this egg is then the champion! The owner of this egg doesn't win anything but bragging rights, but in my family, that's a pretty big deal, lol.

We then hide the broken eggs for the kids to find.

I just assumed that this was a Cajun tradion, since I've never heard of anyone else doing this, but I could very well be wrong.

Does anyone else do this?

Never heard of that! I'm from a small town south of New Orleans...lived there until I moved here for college and I've never heard of it. Maybe that's something more popular in the Lafayette area?

I am also a Louisianian, and I have heard of this, my sister who lives in Lutcher said it was a tradition with her in-laws. We did it at her house last year, it was hilarious. My kids are very competitive so it was a big hit. I don't remember it being called pocking though. I am going to call her and see what they called it.

My husband's family has played that ever since they were little! Only difference is they called it "Epper-egg" I think one of his brother's must have made that name up! :rotfl:

Yep, that was what my sister called it, egg knocking. Thanks denisem, you saved me a call.

She *is* from that area (the heart of Cajun country.) Maybe that's where it started. Who knows!

I introduced pocking to my huge clan of Irish inlaws, and they love it!

My Polish Grandmother taught us years & years ago!

It's one of those old family things my 2 children LOVE to do with their Great-Grandmother!

She's down here in florida for the winter, so we'll be driving up to Bradenton today to color eggs & spend the weekend.

*~* HAPPY EASTER *~*

In my husband's family, this is a big tradition that we all love! Only, we call it "picking". One year, we felt sure we had the big winning egg, it seemed to beat everyone's.....until we got to Pop. No one beats Pop, I think he holds his a special way or something. Our best egg was really round, no oval to it but we haven't found one like that again. Our kids scheme how to get the winning egg (fyi, painting the egg with super glue and nail polish first doesn't help a bit!). Then there is always the argument over WHO has to take all those hard-boiled eggs home that they "won"......no one wants them! :cool1:

Didn't they do something similar in "My Big Fat Greek Wedding"? They were celebrating Easter and Tula and her father did this.

My Easter isn't until May 1st this year.We learned this game
from my yaya(Grandmother).

Yes, I used to do this with my Dad when I was little.... we also called it "picking" (must be a Maryland name?)

I had never heard of this till last night! My best friends family does it, only they call it "egg fights". They use the cracked eggs to make deviled eggs. We did it last night at her house and it was actually really fun! (My egg lost in the final round ;) )

I believe this was my husbands exact words this morning "arent we gonna do the egg thing" ROFL :rotfl: And yes I believe that is the official name LOL apparently after 12 yrs together he decided to introduce me to one of his family traditions!
