Has anyone ever purchased into DVC without staying or touring a property?

We did! But like the OP we have gone every year since 2005 and twice last yr. All times we stayed at the Poly and figured it was room alone $3000 each time. We would have already almost paid for DVC!!!! I did lots of research - my DH was hesitant and boy am I glad I did it before the Stock Mkt activity these last wks. We have family and multiple friends who are DVC members and they gave us the confidence to buy. We bought AKV last month without ever staying at the resort or touring a model. We are looking forward to two trips this yr d/t our incentive points and coming home in June!!! I don't think we'll regret anything.

we were going to WDW for the Millennium celebration with all my kids and spouses. while making the reservations DW was informed that for a couple of thousand more we could have the same vacation every two years.

Given its Disney we were discussing we didn't worry about issues and bought sight unseen which coincidentally was at OKW.

OKW has the biggest rooms and cheapest cost per point/romm and maintenance so the accountant in you should approve of this purchase.

But remember with the rooms now prepaid you will definitely spend much more on meals etc.

We bought without seeing as well. We have been to Disney many times, but never stayed at a DVC resort. When I read about AKV I knew it was for us and bought!:goodvibes

we bought ssr without ever seeing it. We only bought there bc of the extra years...we plan on staying everywhere else instead of our home resort.

We had a few nights at Pop under our belts, but hadn't seen any of the DVC resorts. No regrets though, first trip to AKL/WL was awesome :)

We bought without seeing anything too. It was one of our best decisions ever!! We own at AKV now since September 2007, and added on last month after 1 visit.;)

Thanks for all the great replies. We really enjoy staying moderate, but the price seems to be creeping more and more towards $200 per night.....so, we started looking into DVC. I'm still in research mode, but we have done a lot of research so far and we are sold on DVC.

We are definitely leaning towards SSR because of the extra years and the newly added THV. My mom has always wanted to stay at OKW. From what I've read, SSR and OKW seem to be the two "easiest" resorts to get into if they are not your home resort. Is this correct? Would it be relatively easy for me to stay at OKW every once in awhile with SSR points? I'm not talking Christmas week, or Easter week...just maybe during the summer or during our fall break in October.

Again...thanks for all the great replies. It has helped to build my confidence a little more with our decision to buy-in without ever touring or staying DVC.

In 1997, we purchased OKW pts. sight unseen. Our first stay there was the following year and we fell in love with it.
We have since added on more OKW pts and AKV pts. WE LOVE OUR DVC and feel that it is one of the best financial decisions that we've ever made.

Good luck to you in whatever you decide!! :goodvibes

Our first trip to Disney was in 1999 and my family and myself stayed at Dixie Landings. I knew then that Disney was something truly special.

Through the old Rec.arts.disney.parks newsgroup I heard about DVC , and was led here for more information. After researching for more than a few months my wife and I decided to purchase an OKW resale in the summer of 2000. We had never actually seen a unit, and only had one on-site stay at a moderate.

We've enjoyed it so much that we added on at AKV also (somewhat) sight unseen. We had stayed at the Animal Kingdom Lodge several times before they announced the Villas - and bought the Villas within the first month they were available.

And will probably buy a small contract at Grand Californian when it becomes available :) .

:lmao: Oh, Yeah! Also, bought sight unseen!
Purchased SSR in Oct. '04...only 3 months after
staying at the Polynesian...I DO NOT REGRET IT!!!

Yep, we bought BCV via resale. Never took a tour, never stayed there. We'd seen SAB and had eaten at a couple of BCR restaurants, so we kind of had a "feel" for what it was like. We've also been to WDW many times & stayed in several resorts, so we felt comfortable with what we were getting into.

Another site unseen buyer here. But we HAD been to WDW several times and knew we'd love it because we knew we liked the deluxe resorts over the moderates. Our intent is to try all of the DVC resorts over time.:goodvibes

We have stayed mulitple time at our home resort, but in a regular room, not a villa, studio, etc. We were happy with the location and are assuming that the Villas are on par with the rest of the resort. We just closed on our contract we leave for WL in two weeks, our first stay as a DVC member won't be until next year.

not only did I not tour or visit a DVC resort before buying . . . .

I've never even been to WDW!

(well, unless you count the trip in the 70's when I was a kid and there was only a Magic Kingdom :rotfl: )

My first trip "home" to both SSR and WDW is on Halloween . . . .

Yup - me too! And I've truly never been. We are DLR people and thus bought mainly for VGC. I am very much looking forward to our first trip to AKV though. I cannot imagine why we wouldn't like it. We are very easy to please.

Bought ssr - sight unseen over the phone. Very happy with my choice.

We bought SSR in 2005. We had never stayed at a Disney resort and the last time we had been to WDW was 1999.

But we knew we wanted to begin annual trips, we wanted to stay on property, and we wanted to stay where there was a kitchen and separate bedroom.

We are very happy with our purchase.

I did. I purchased HHI for a summer vacation in July. My trip will be this summer. After looking at the pictures and reading the reviews I just know this resort will be perfect for my family in the summer. ;)

Count me in for buying before I saw a DVC Villa. I had a rental scheduled, but a contract became available resale. We had closed in March, had our rental stay in May, both at VWL. I had stayed at WL once, I knew the Lodge was for me. :goodvibes

Never saw a unit or stayed in one and we just closed on a BWV resale.

We stayed at Pop Century in July and fell in love with WDW all over again (both DH and i had been there, not together though, in the past but not stayed on property). Decided we want to go to WDW every other year but stay deluxe instead so that we can have a bigger bed and be closer to the parks. We particularly loved the Epcot resort area when we walked over to there from the WS to explore a little. We first looked into BCV (we actually went into the lobby of that one and it was breathtaking, as were other deluxes we saw). We saw the Boardwalk area although we did not go into the lobby of BWI/BWV.

Once I began my research this summer (remember me everyone? I was waiting until Spring 2009 to buy...well I am now a DVC member!!! :lmao: ), DVC began to make more and more sense for us. I played with numbers and when I saw how much a 10-night stay costs in any deluxe resort in TODAY'S money, I was stunned at what I could buy for about 4 times that amount, and have WDW vacations for over 30 years more! Our kids are little so we have plenty of time for family vacations to WDW ahead of us. I looked at points charts, and discovered that it costs fewer points to stay in a standard view at BWV than to stay in the same size room at BCV. We are not particular about the view, and would stay in a standard if it costs us fewer points and would allow us a longer trip. Then I noticed that for resales, BWV were selling for less money per point. Now, one may argue 2 points with me...one, that maintenance fees are slightly higer for BWV than for BCV...two, that BCV has Stormalong Bay, a pool area to which, even as a DVC member, you cannot pool hop. However, the price was still significantly lower than BCV, the lower points cost for the room was VERY appealing, and we are sure we will be much more than satisfied with the pool at BWV! Plus, we could walk to both Epcot and DHS from BWV. Music to our ears...no buses or car to deal with for 2 of the theme parks!! And, we also knew that in order to make sure we could take advantage of the lower point cost rooms at BWV we would have to be members there and be able to book the room 11 months out. We tend to book our vacations a year in advance (unless like in the past, my TA talked me out of it and we waited a few more months and booked the same thing anyway), so this was perfect for us.

So, even though we never saw a unit or stayed in one, we took the plunge. I have full confidence that Disney will not let us down and that we will enjoy all of our future stays at BWV!

SSR and OKW are the largest, so they are the easiest to book. Depending on where you purchase, I think the THVs or grand villas at OKW will be the hardest to book without home resort priority. With that said, I don't think you'll have an issue booking a studio, 1 or 2-BR at OKW in the summer at the 7 month window. In fact, I have been able to book 6 nights (at different times of the year) at BWV, AKV, SSR and VWL at the 4-5 month mark. I didn't try to book BCV, so I can't say whether it was available or not.

At the end of the day, look at it this way. Can you make vacation plans 8 - 11 months in advance? At the 7 month window, any DVC member can book at any resort, so your home resort priority goes out the window. If you can, home resort priority should be a consideration. If not, go for the best deal for you (whether that's price, incentives, contract years, potential resale value, etc.). Everyone's different, and everyone has different priorities.
