Snape has a good reason to feel guilty for their deaths (especially Harry's father's). He apparantly loved Lily, but he owed his life to Harry's father. While they were students, Sirius had set up a "joke" that involved SS following Lupin into the shrieking shack - when he got there, he would have encountered Lupin as a werewolf. Harry's father came after him and saved him - which means SS owes his life to Harry's father. There is some sort of close magical connection between wizards who have saved each other's lives - we know that because DD told Harry that Harry was connected with that sort of magic after Harry saved Peter Pettigrew's life. We don't know much about it, other than what DD told Harry.becker1123 said:DD always defended him. I couldn't find a good reason why he did this. Harry mentioned that it had something to do with Snape feeling guilty about Harry's parents dying after he told LV about the prophecy he overheard. That just doesn't wash ... Snape hated James and Lily, so why would he care?
When SS had heard the first part of the prophesy and told LV about it, he did not know who it referred to. When he found out about Harry's parent's deaths, he realized that he had been responsible for their deaths. DD said that SS had come to him after their deaths and expressed his regret for having been responsible. I think part of his regret was love for Lily and part was because of his connection to Harry's father. I think that is a very good reason for DD to trust him.
