When you get home with your kids and check their loot, what stuff do you automatically toss out? I thought this might help some people decide what to give (or not give) for Halloween. You can also post about the things that annoy you. I don't know why, but it bothers me when people dump loose change in DS's bag.

Great thread! We always check the kids' candy before letting them eat it. We toss things that look like they have been opened, rewrapped, or things that look suspicious. We'd rather be safe than sorry!

what a great thread!:)
I toss ALL hard candy Like butterscooth, peperments etc... chocking hazard for little ones big time!!! I toss those peanut butter fudge like things that are in the black and orange wrappers.... can you say YUCK!
I limit the laffy tafy stuff and other hard stuff... oh yeah my kids hate tootsie rolls, those get tossed... My DD wants only the "good" stuff and gum! My DS will eat anything , and this year will be the first year my youngest DD will really be into the candy, oh and Please, please don't put fruit in my kids bag, (I know you are trying to be healthy) but please one night a year, the kids want candy!! don't flame me!
do people still pass out those popcorn balls? b/c those of course would get tossed...

I always threw out the molasses candies, raisins, pencils and reading material... that's if i didn't pick it out of my pillow case and chuck it back at the house! Who buys this junk? Halloween is about candy, if that's a problem, turn out the lights and get the pressure washer ready to get the egg off!

I forgot to post about the stuff I throw out.

Fruit because it can be so easily tampered with
Mary Janes YUCK
Plastic rings or other useless toys
Religious papers

Sometimes I'm so tempted to just buy a bag of the assorted candy at Costco and have the kids stay home!

We toss out all the Mary Janes as well.
Any dark chocolate as the kids don't like it.
Anything butterscotch.

Those nasty peanut chews go right in the trash.

Um... ok. :scared1:

The black and orange wrapped ones hit the trash, those are just awful!

You can send all those MaryJanes to me!

We throw out anything like raisins or other things that you can't be sure they haven't been monkeyed with. All the religious stuff goes buh bye, too.

One son can't have dyes, so whatever remains after picking out stuff they won't can't have, they end up trading the dyed stuff against the non dyed stuff. Younger son loves it-he gets more tootsie rolls and laffy taffys.

Then, for the next month or so, they get a piece of candy or two a day. They eventually lose interest, and mom and dad eat the good stuff that's left.

crayons, play-doh, the cheap plastic things like rings, fruit, homemade things, raisins all get tossed here. Anything that could be tampered with or just takes up space is gone. Loose change is OK.

What are Mary Janes? The only Mary Janes I've ever heard of are shoes and...well....let's say "items that should not be given out at Halloween, anyways... :smokin: " Are they some type of gross candy?

I thought the only case of "tampered" Halloween candy was a father who poisoned his own child, and claimed it was tampered candy to cover up his own guilt.

I don't lose sleep over the "razor in an apple" urban legend, but then I don't think my kids have ever received apples.

Maybe parents should inspect the candy as it is given so they can take note of who gives the bad stuff and skip those houses next year?

I do sort out the candies the kids don't like, but instead of throwing them away, I have my husband take them to work. There is usually someone in the office who likes whatever we don't.

Amen! My husband and I were talking about this the other day...when we were kids, those were the first to go. Yuck!

Oh My, we love the tootsie rolls over here and the dark chocolate...ok, I should clarify, I love the tootsie rolls and chocolate LOL...I have 3 trick or treaters and love to pick through their stuff ;)
I get rid of the hard candy and that peanut butter stuff too YUCK...

I Can not STAND when people pass out that religious literature on halloween. I m sorry, it is just not the place for it. If you dont believe in Halloween, then dont answer your door, but please do not drop those pamphlets in my kids bags.

I guess I should have saved the second half of my post from lg3's thread for this one...... ;)

No candy like hershey's kisses, mini peanut butter cups, or anything wrapped in foil like that. I just don't trust it, I don't know why, but I just don't. We keep all candy that is sealed tight like the little fun bars etc. As far as anything we don't like, I just bring it to work....it is gone in an instant.

No business cards either. This isn't a time to solicit your real estate career!

Yes, they're gross. I think they are the chewy peanut butter candy everyone is talking about.

I always checked DD's bag and threw out anything homemade. That's kind of sad. I know that one cannot take a chance, but I fondly remember the night before Halloween when I was a kid. My mom, my siblings and I would make popcorn balls to give out. They were so good and it was so much fun to make them. We'd put food coloring in the syrup to make them different colors and wrap them in cellophane wrap. It's a shame that all of the wonderful homemade things cannot be shared because of a few sick people in the world. :guilty:

raisins go right in the trash, religious material usually gets taken out of the bag at the house that gives it to us and left on their step or in their bushes! Tootsi rolls and smarties and mary janes get "regifted" and given out to the next poor kid that comes to my house! (but at least I don't give out rocks!)
